Cherries $7.99/kg @ Big Watermelon, Bushy Park [Wantirna, VIC]

$16.90/kg @ Woolworths

$11.87/kg @ Coles

1161 High Street Road, Wantirna South, VIC, 3152

Look for bright red shiny-skinned cherries. Their stems should be intact and they should feel slightly heavy for their size. Avoid any soft or wrinkled looking cherries. Store cherries in the fridge for up to 4 to 5 days. Remove them from the fridge 30 minutes before serving as their flavour is enhanced when they are eaten at room temperature. Wash cherries with their stalks still on (this prevents water from penetrating the fruit). Serve as they are or remove stalks and stones if using in cooking.

Gee those cherries look good. Hoping someone can comment on the taste :)

  • Bright or dark, which is better?

    • +8

I prefer dark. Usually sweeter and juicier.

      • Look up a variety called Kordia, they are the best. Hard to come by though, not many people growing them

      • I prefer the mark varieties, but he much lighter ones are good too. Don't dig the locally available ones though as their taste is quite bland.

Examples of the light/mark nice cherries below:
        http://scontent.cdninstagram.com/t51.2885-15/s480x480/e15/13…

        • Those 'light' coloured cherries are marketed as 'white' cherries in some places.

Found them to be much sweeter generally than the usual red ones, which can sometimes be tart.

  • Hmm does Coles Price Match like westfarmers other brand Bunnings does ?

    • No.

  • As an alternative, you can buy imported frozen cherries for about $8/kg from Colesworths.

They've got nothing on local fresh cherries!

    • +1

Frozen vs. fresh are so different, they might as well be completely different, unrelated fruit.

But they can be nice and are good for what they are. They make a nice frozen treat… but taste wise they're no substitute for fresh.

Do they come with free Hepatitis?

  • -1

They are pretty mediocre. The good ones were 24kg each.

    • +12

Holy crap. Those must've been some HUGE cherries!

      • +3

        Probably from cancer.

        • Lol… knew exactly what that would be before clicking it.

it is so easy to eat a kg but so much hard work to pick.

  • +1

These small juicy balls of joy are pretty cheap

  • Crikey are they even ripe? Not very red looking at that picture

  • I picked cherries over a few summers, and I've never been able to find cherries if the same quality as the ones I picked. Does anyone know or where to buy high quality cherries, the ones I picked were regularly 50¢ piece size, way bigger than the 20¢ piece size you see in supermarkets and greengrocers

    • Oh where, was it a farm? Or did you work there? I worked at a food awards night Coles provided fruit to bring home, and it was a premium quality like I've never seen anywhere except those crazy expensive organic stores.

    • We export the best ones.

      • yeah, i do remember rumours that the cherries were exported to Italy. Surely some of the top quality ones stay around

I went to Wandin last week to pick cherries. There was over a 1000 people. 4 of us paid 12 dollars entry and $12 per kg to take them out….yes, we pay to pick cherries and now the fruit shop down the road is selling for $8!!!! bargain

    • +1

To be fair, the cherries you picked would have been much better than these at $8/kg. Plus, you get to eat cherries while you're picking, though that's probably why the orchard charges an entry fee.

  • just be aware that the cherries are kinda small…the taste is very bland….they are half the size of the cherries you buy at coles or safeway

  • I went there this morning and i can say there were no cherries $8 a kg…
