    • Well if imei spoofing is possible then maybe you could use it in a different device

  • it's a pity that you cant access something like this through telstra's 4GX. I got 186Mbps down, 40Mbps up, 28ms ping on my iphone just in the street in south brisbane on speedtest. Wouldn't it be cheaper to build out cell towers to deal with the bandwidth then to bury a fibre cable everywhere up to people's houses? Quicker too.

    • How about 60 Tbps?

One problem with wireless networks is they operate over a shared carrier. This means that if everyone within a certain area is using the network at the same time, each person gets reduced speeds. I've seen speeds vary between 170 and 30 down depending on time of day.

Radio signal propagation is also a very finicky thing - literally turning around and facing the other way can be the difference between 150 or 20. I've seen that happen. Take a step to the left, and your speeds double. In a dense city with lots of towers, the path a signal takes can be pretty crazy.

Basically, FTTP is a more reliable/consistent option. And it the carrier should be able to easily go up to (or exceeding?) 1 Gbps if the termination equipment supports it.

(Funnily enough, wireless actually tends to work better in remote areas where you can get line-of-sight to the tower from long distances.)

  • Does anyone know how speed would compare with say NBN fixed wireless?
We're getting NBN wireless in the next 2 months I think.

  • Star Wars - The Congestion Strikes Back!

  • I struggle to get 10mbps on my Optus ADSL+ connection so this would probably be better. My Telstra 4g connection is giving me 19mbps download and 22mbps upload right now which is much better than my broadband.

Back in NZ I got 30mbps from both. I just assumed that Australia would be light years ahead when I moved here in the winter.

    • haha.. NZ is a first world country.. back home i used to bought 100/50 plan and got 95/38 speeds.. Aussie is so backwards..

  • Would have jumped at it if I didn't get migrated to their cable network.

Was previously on ADSL and this would have been an upgrade, a very hand one at that.

  • anywhere to check coverage that isnt linked to a devce ( for some reason you always need to enter your phone model etc) live in a shared house and game and do updates/buy games online so this is really tempting
paying 55 for 40 gb of 10000 / 1000 kbps so not like ill miss speed

    • i called optus technical support to check my coverage area. They will tell you where your closest towers are and when they were upgraded and such.

  • See if there's any Fixed Wireless providers in your area before looking at something like this.

For example the provider I'm with offers 500GB with 25/10 for $74.95 and $149 setup fee on 12 month contract.

Usually these companies focus on a city or local area so you might want to ask around for providers on Whirlpool etc.

I used to use Vividwireless and could never go back unless there was no other option.

    • who you using now thats a pretty great deal :D

      • I use UnitiWireless, they cover some places in Adelaide. Like I said, find out providers that might service your area.

        • They're also in central Melbourne and Bayside. Which is really annoying because I only found out about them the day after I bought the Vivid modem and signed up with them >_<

        • why no add the raptor? 50mb?

im in Adelaide, please tell me of stability, latency, congestion …….

        • +1

@T1OOO: Oh I do have the raptor add-on, I was just giving s pricing suggestion.

I've never had any latency or congestion issues. My local tower is relatively new so there were a few teething issues but soooo much better than the joke of a connection that I was getting with ADSL2

        • @UnciasDream:

I signed up last night! About time we got better speeds.

        • @UnciasDream:

how can you see where the towers are? im in seaton.

        • @T1OOO: You would be on the Findon tower, just like me. I'm in Woodville West. Small world.

        • @UnciasDream:

nope, findon has too many trees, westlakes same story, woolville tower dono…

so iv had to go with nuSkope, uniti were pretty usless, did everything they could to make sure i didnt get it.

        • @T1OOO: That sucks. You're connected to nuSkope now?

I actually tried nuScope first and my place failed because of trees and tall buildings in the area.

I have friends with nuScope and they've been really happy, so I'd say you would be too.

All that matters is you end up with a fast connection. I've noticed both nuScope and Uniti are very picky about houses they connect. From what I understand, if one house is running poorly it effects all connections to the same tower, so it's probably not worth the hassle for them if it's not 100%.

        • @UnciasDream:

nope, only put in the application to nuskope last week after twice bing denied by unity and them not moving the ball over xmas….

right now actually, given nuskope will sot me $139 vs $59 for my adsl, im not sure i actually even want it now….

    • who you with!?

  • Let's say I connect my Optus fetch box to it will the data count toward 200GB?

  • I checked coverage for address in Sydney inner city and it says "not available." I checked the 4G Plus network map which certainly covers all of Sydney's inner city. Is that a trick to not congest city network towers? Can I still order or will online people give me hard time to do so?

    • If you're confident you could borrow an address from friends or family. They won't let you order with an "ineligible" address.

    • Careful, there is a difference between 4g and 4gplus band frequency, the two are not the same, and there is a reason this deal is not on the 4gx/+ frequency.
I live in an area where I get no 4g at all, but plenty of 4gx/plus.

  • is there a expiry on this ? the student apartment might be getting nuskope wanna give them to February if not ill do this :)

  • Probably a silly question but would this work with the whole Optus data share. As in would this 200gb pool be available for me to use as part of my phone plan too?

    • No.

    • +1

      lol! nice idea.

  • I signed up about 3 weeks ago to Wireless Broadband through Optus and couldn't be happier.
I get a consistent 12Mb and can stream Netflix without issue at good quality.
Definitely recommend this for anyone who doesn't have NBN and is stuck with shitty ADSL

    • Which city?

      • Mornington Peninsula, VIC

    • How long can the 200gb last you on Netflix?

      • We were on Optus wireless for a month. Even holding back (ie, watching an hour or two every night of youtube/netflix streaming and minimal downloading/gamning etc) we still went over the limit. Switched to Vivid and can say we didn't really notice the slightly slower speed. At least this way we don't have to constantly worry about chewing through our data allowance.

Also where we are the speed is constantly 10Mbps (Optus was ALWAYS 12Mbps) no matter what time of day. Guess we have great coverage here:

Has anyone used this in Brisbane?

  • what happens if you cancel the 24 month contract early? Also, after the 12 month phone contract is up, will they bill you more each month for the remaining time on the 24 month internet contract?

  • -2

This is such a rip off. I have the 50GB version of this plan, and its so slow, even ADSL 1 feels faster. Latency is a killer as well, forget gaming. Waste of time. Negative vote for me forever.

  • Optus are A-holes as well. They always charge you late fees, and you cannot ring them, or speak with anyone that makes any sense. beware..

  • I need a plan like this but for 4gx/+, I have limited 3g and 4g where I live but plenty of 4gx/+. My adsl2+ connection is rubbish.

  • I don't get this. If it is 4G Optus why is the coverage so limited?

    • +1

Remember this isn't the full 4G. Maybe they're showing the 4G 2300mhz coverage only because that's the only way you'll get the maximum 12mbps.

      • Ah thank you

    your math is interesting……..

  • Hey,

Im thinking of signing up to the Vivid deal.

Just a few questions, if I go month to month and pay the $199 for modem can I then go to the 24month deal and be credited back the $199? I just want to try it out for a bit but not have to pay the $199, in any event can I sell the modem back? Or can I just go buy a cheaper one somewhere? 12 months would be ok, but 24 is just too long to save $200 with an un tested solution.

    Cheers

  • Thanks for the post OP, had a chat with Optus and decided to go with their base unlimited cable plan. I've got a mobile plan with optus as well and was able to negotiate some other discounts so total for signing a 24 month plan is $40/month.

    • did you ask them, if the speed of the cable is not ideal, can you switch to wireless boardband? Thanks.

      • Sorry no I didnt

        • no worries. Thanks a lot
