  • i prefer malaysia than singapore. similar but malaysia is much cheaper.
of course we are not talking about go for shopping branded goods..

    • At least you don't have to watch your back all the time in Singapore. The crime situation is pretty bad in Malaysia. Only getting worse.

      • Is it really? Really wanted to go there this year

        • My other-half almost had her handbag snatched by a guy on a motorbike in KL. Safe district as well. Thankfully he didn't get it. Dealing with the police there can be a mess.

Don't get me started on the Taxi drivers over there as well. If you ever visit, take Uber everywhere.

The majority of the crime with respect to tourists in tourist areas is apparently non-confrontational (e.g. pick-pocketing), so you won't really see it or feel it. Malaysian crime poses much higher risks and anxiety for its residents and long-term visitors since snatch theft is on the rise (similar to Vietnam and Cambodia) and this can lead to fatal accidents. A man on a motorcycle grabbing a bag can cause it's owner's head to hit the ground and this has previously resulted in fatalities. I wouldn't carry a hand bag or wear a necklace.

There is no doubt that Malaysia has rampant corruption and governmental incompetence at every level, which doesn't give confidence.

But on the surface Malaysia will feel like Singapore-lite. They've started cracking down heavily on loitering and the "appearance" of criminal activity. And the food is such good value.

        • @peterpeterpumpkin: agree. And the durians!!

        • Malaysian street food is the best.

I travel to Malaysia several times a year. Never had a problem (never had a problem in Singapore either).
In Malaysia, you do have a large police presence - especially in tourist areas, but I have always felt safe (and I am female).
What I don't like about Malaysia is that a lot of places are quite dirty and taxi drivers will try to 'rip you off'.

        • ahh, the taxi driver. same in some part of australia.

        • @brongz: At least the Australian ones don't turn off the meter. Try complaining to SPAD (in KL) and they'll side with the taxi driver.

I was there for a week and never had an issue.

much much prefer singapore than malaysia. Public transport is way awesome. No cab drivers trying to con you. Don't feel intimated walking on the street late. City better laid out. Streets are cleaner. List goes on….

      • much much more expensive. you can't get your own room for $30 in singapore and since aud1 equal to sgd1 it just getting expensive in sg.

        • MYR dropped like no tomorrow. Good time to visit. Will be there in Jan - Feb

The email I got sent showed sale FlyBag fares to Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi, but there's nothing showing up on their website. So weird. I'm holding out for cheaper fares from Gold Coast in June/July.

    • Yeah it's weird. $130 from Perth for FlyBag is a good deal.

Although you're flying from the Gold Coast, I would contact them and ask what's the deal. Maybe they'll give you a voucher to stop you dobbing them in to some authority.

If they say no the listed price is not too bad. I was faced with the same situation before and booked separate flights (with Jetstar and Tiger) but spent a night in Singapore on the way there (and a night in KL on the way back with AirAsia) to spend the $60 saved elsewhere. The problem is that Singapore accommodation costs higher than KL so you'll probably spend a little more money.

  • Don't forget that Scoot refuses to honour the Reserve Bank of Australia Payments System Board Standard regarding excessive surcharges, so you'll pay $10 per leg in card fees (~7% for Sydney to Singapore RT). It "legally" bypasses the surcharge regulation since it doesn't use an Australian bank for its payment processing. Or so Scoot tells me…

POLi is still free. However, it's still very temperamental in my experience so it can be a frustrating experience when the POLi session crashes after payment, the funds have clearly been withdrawn, but the merchant hasn't received a payment confirmation from POLi. With AirAsia the confirmation has always eventually gone through within 24 hours so I wouldn't risk double booking with a credit card. Another issue with Citibank, for example, is that if your POLi session is lost for whatever reason (e.g. you exit the browser to retrieve your OTP and your stupid Android browser refreshes the tab…) you have to wait 10 minutes to again access Citibank via POLi.

  • Is scoot any good? Never heard of them until now. $139 one way seems like a good price though. Maybe jetstar will price match?

    • Scoot's pretty good espically on their new 787 Dreamliner. No issue with them as of yet.

      • The Singapore flights leave 1 in the morning? Did I read that correct?

        • just play around in changi airport

    • Jetstar pricematch if it's the same flight (ie PER - SG direct) and within 1 hour of the cheaper flight. You can also book any flight that day (ie not just the one you matched). I did it with return flights to Bali earlier this year vs AirAsia because the flights were direct.

      • When you say you can book any flight that day, you mean of the same route?

        • +1

Of course haha. So if there are 4 PER - SG flights you can do any of them.

      • I think Jetstar price match is: if domestic or transtasman, flight to be matched must depart 1 hour before of after the Jetstar flight. For internationals, it only has to be the same day and route, time doesn't matter :)

do we know when these prices expire?

    • just realised cheap tuesday… do you guys think these prices will drop down this low for singpore again? i want to book for next year end of march of june, just waiting for leave to be approved.

  • Hi all,

I'm trying to book a flight from Singapore to Sydney (one way only) on Saturday 11th February but I keep getting a price of $204. Is that correct? Should it not be cheaper since the RETURN trip is $278?

Can someone please assist? (Also I need checked in Luggage…20kg…Thanks)

If you are a Guest of Size who requires 2 seats, please make your booking via our Call Centre at least 3 days before departure. Failure to do so may result in you being denied transportation. Fares and fees for 2 guests apply.

    Ain't that interesting.

  • I can't be the only one who hates Scoot…It's horribly horrible…There is a base price, then there are fees for EVERYTHING! Like EVERYTHING! (And it isn't even that cheap to start off with).

    • +1

      Isn't Jetstar the same?

      • Nope…at least in my experience.

  • I just tried booking return from Sydney. Price is $425. Looks like the deal is expired?

  • Why is the return from Gold Coast to Singapore at least $400 does this deal only work on a certain weekday?
