Huawei P9 $599 @ JB Hi-Fi

960

Seems like a good price for local stock although this version doesn't support dual sim.

Purchased one yesterday from JB Hifi in Cannington WA and it was the last one so best call up to check stock.

Good price considering grey imports are $50 less.

Edit - M8 8 available as well for the same price: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/phones/Outright-Mobile-Handsets/hu…

Am loving my Mate 8. Fantastic phone and will be even better when Android 7/EMUI 5 arrives early next year.

      • bit wierd, but can you talk it up for me? What do you like about it?

I'm on the cusp of picking a new phone, coming from a note 4. When i compare the note 4 to the mate 8 and a few others the note 4 seems to still be the better phone according to spec comparisons.

        • +3

Sure can. There's a lot to like and also some things to be aware of.

I came from a boot looping LG G4, so firstly, the best thing is the outstanding battery life. It's so nice to be able to go two days between charging. It's very aggressive with battery management and you need to configure a few things to ensure that you don't miss any notifications from apps. I've done this to Facebook, Whatsapp etc and it is working fine.

The fingerprint scanner is rocket fast. In fact the entire phone feels very snappy and I have never experienced any lag.

The 6" size is great and I like that the screen resolution is 1080p and not QHD. Things just seem easier to read. It has various options where you can play with the size of interface elements like text and images.

There's no app drawer but most people use a launcher and seem to be OK with this. An app drawer is coming in the new EMUI version which is arriving early next year. I don't bother using a launcher but it will be nice to have an app drawer.

Read up on EMUI and see if you're OK with the way it handles things. I've used stock Android, Touchwiz, LG UX and Xperia UI and I'm finding Emotion UI to be fine.

        • @etchomojay:

          Thanks heaps for that!

I love the bigger battery aspect, hate running out of juice on a Friday night drinks session after work and not being able to book an uber.

I'd definitely be sticking with Nova launcher so EMUI wouldn't be an issue.

Do you have any thoughts on the camera? Thats one thing swaying me about just spending the extra on a Samsung, because I plan on taking whatever phone I get on a ~4 month trip as my main camera.

        • @nicholasnbg:

Hah yeah nothing worse than the dreaded dead battery when you're battered and just want to get home! I haven't really used the camera much but it's definitely not as good as my G4. It's not very good shooting in low light so I definitely wouldn't want to be using it as my primary camera on a holiday!

    please be gentle!

Do you use this line often?!

    • We show a bit consideration when ladies say that !!

      • All three of you?

        • We are six if you come back and look in the morning :)

Nice phone, especially at this price point. Android OS but menus feel like iOS, but better in some areas. Normal glass used on back and front so make sure to use a case or protector if prone to rubbing on keys, etc. Too bad it only comes in the grey right now. Apple could learn a few things from this phone. Would recommend for those who want the latest tech but can't afford/dislike the latest iPhone or Samsung.

    • Wait till Emui5 hits this device, which will bring App Draw. I hate iOS layout as well.

      • +1

I replaced the default launcher with Nova https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/282963 and couldnt be happier with this phone.

        • +1

I can't live without Nova as well :)

        • +2

          @coolbbb888:

If all my Android phones I have always replaced the launcher immediately with Nova.

Best purchase ever from the App Store.

Apple could learn a few things from this phone.

Funny most people say it happened the other way :p

    • +2

The problem is when someone (ie Jobs) has the idea but then their invention (ie iPhone) doesn't follow the competitors improvements. I followed the normal mobile evolution: palm pilot, blackberry, iphone and finally android. Anyone remembers how innovative palm used to be back in late 1990s?

  • Warranty should be 2 years regardless of wait they offer. It's the law.

    • +1

The warranty on mine is 2 years on the Huawei website

      • Carrier branded or unbranded? I know branded 6Ps were 2 years due to the 2 year contract thing, but my unbranded one came with a 12 month warranty card.

        • +1

Statutory warranty by law, separate to warranty cards.
          https://www.accc.gov.au/business/treating-customers-fairly/c…

        • +1

@Fobsessive: The thing is, there is nothing concrete in there. It's all "normal expectation", "fit for purpose". I'm sure in the end, if you fought it, you'd get warranty past 1 year, but I suspect they won't make it easy for you, and there's really nothing to quote with regards to ACL.

        • @TheContact:

What retailer is going to show up to the small claims tribunal though? Easier to just refund than waste their time.

        • +1

@Duff5000: As I said, I'm sure they would give you your claim, but they're gonna stuff you about at first. I mean, how many people would know to push that far when it's in black and white that their warranty is 12 months?

        • +1

          @TheContact:

Realistically you dont even need to. Just mention you will contact ACCC/ office of fair trading and most retailers will give in. If they don't just make contact and sort it out from there.

  • +1

Great phone. You won't be disappointed.

  • +7

Might as well get one on contract.

For example Virgin mobile has it on a $40 plan over 24 months for total of $960. So you pay $360 more = extra $15 a month and get unlimited calls, 2gb per month etc etc.

Why would you pay $600 outright?

    • some people can use the salary sacrifice scheme for the device to get more tax benefit. Then $360 is more than enough for them to get the similar usage from smaller telecom company

    • +1

Depends on what you need in a plan as well, for me its far cheaper to buy outright and continue using my Optus $40 10gb plan

    • Got it on this plan a few weeks back before this deal, gonna say we happy with the phone coming from an iPhone & a nexus 4 before that.
The built quality is on par with the iPhone which is quite something.

    • I got this phone yesterday. There is a deal with Vodaphone atm. On a $60 plan, $15 for handset and a $10 credit.
      http://www.vodafone.com.au/android/huawei-p9
So $55 a month with 4GB data. Beat my old plan and replaces the phone I broke.

  • +4

Very good camera by mobile phone standard.
I have one and the photos look fantastic. I bought it for $799 when it was released.

    • How long will it take to recharge the battery let's say from 20% to 95-100% mark?

      • +2

        Roughly 60 - 90 mins.

      • You can also purchase a turbocharger separately if speed is needed.

  • +2

If only they had the P9 Plus for the same price, would have been quite tempted!

    • seems p9 plus was not released for au stock

      • Yeah unfortunately :(

  • +1

Good phone, great camera. Enough said.

  • Battery is excellent as well compared with my Nexus 6p. Great phone but the Mate 9 was also recently released overseas so I'm guessing they're trying to clear P9 stock locally to make way for a mate 9 launch in Australia.

  • Mmm, I wonder if Harvey Norman will price match this? Might give it a go, I've still got the HN Amex statement credits in play.

    • Can you split payment when purchasing online?

      • Wouldn't have thought so. I was planning on trying it in store but there's no stock anywhere in Victoria. Assuming that if HN price match they will check stock first.

        • In case anyone's wondering I tried to price match at Harvey Norman and they said no because there must be immediate stock available.

    • +1

there is a p9 at my local store in QLD, have made an inquiry and will let you know if it pans out.

  • This or Moto z play ?

Is Huawei pretty good with updates ?

    • No.

    • +1

      Battery life:
      Z Play is better

      Camera:
      P9 is much better

      Processor/GPU:
      P9 is better

      Updates
P9 is getting Nougat soon supposedly, so is Z Play. Future updates? Wouldnt be too optimistic for either tbh.

      Software experience
Subjective, but most will prefer Z Play.

    • I'm in the same boat as you! Would prefer the P9 primarily for the smaller size but the battery on the Z play has been given top marks by reviewers which is quite tempting.

    • -1

The biggest advantage the z play has, is the dual 4g/3g. Battery lift is another noticeable bonus but could be overkill as P9 is still quite sufficient for people who charge everyday.

P9 of course has other advantages like power and camera. Also the look and build quality certainly can attract some people.

    $40/per month for 2 years=$960 vs $599+$20(minimum)*24=$1079
    Mmmm food for thought? :)

    • +3

      Prepaid vs postpaid.

Salary sacrifice for some, TRS refund for some.

Personally I would be happy to pay a bit extra just to stay away from contracts.

  • Great phone. Camera is awesome on it. Only downside is lack of the app drawer for those coming from the other brands. But it's stupidly fast this phone..

    • +1

      Nova Launcher is your friend

  • +1

What's the camera like for photographing children (who never bloody sit still)? Low light/inside?

I was going to play around with one of the demos in an Optus store but they had them installed in this stupid security housing that prevented you moving the phone at all. Yes taking test pictures of the countertop 5cm away is a fantastic help.

    • The second cam of P9 is only black/white, which brings much details but not light. So I suppose it is good for landscape but not portait/lowlight. Some reviews show iphone is better for portait than this, and samsung s6/7 are better in low light.

      • The second cam is meant to give it detail and depth into the original photo (kind of binds them together) and used as a fast autofocus. So yes, it works really well for snapping impatient people, kids and animals. iPhone being better? Not a chance. Maybe the 7 Plus with dual cameras (not the single sensor). Even then, the standard iPhone Camera app is total rubbish and that you cannot even adjust any functionality on it at all, let alone (Semi) manual settings.

    • Using it in Auto mode, it's on par with all other flagships and it'll come down to personal preference on colour saturation etc.
However when used in Pro (read: manual) mode, that's where it really shines, and outclasses others, at least from my experience.
The dedicated monochrome mode is excellent as well, slapping on some black & white filter doesn't compare.
'Bokeh' mode is hit or miss, but I find as long as you don't try anything too extreme (eg. F0.95), you'll get pleasing results (also depends on subject & background)

    Touchscreen - True

    O RLY?

  • That's seriously a very good deal. Bought mine a 3 weeks ago (to replace my Note 7) and took massive amount of effort to get them to price match to $649.

So far I have been very impressed with the phone, good touch and feel, smooth performance, and good camera and battery life. Obviously, the CPU power isn't as good as Note 7 or Galaxy S7, but it is an excellent phone at this price point.

    • -1

Obviously, the CPU power isn't as good as Note 7 or Galaxy S7

Sorry, but did you actually experience this in real use or get this a second hand knowledge from some benchmark results?

IMO, the P9 is only faster than its main competitor, the S7 in real use. Also I XDA had article like this that revealed the real value from Huawei's soc in the more accurate new benchmark test.

  • Really good phone for the price
Only weakness is huawei using half-arsed GPUs. This phone for example has a Mali T880 mp4 (4 core) gpu, while the s7 uses a 12-core implementation.

  • lots of online reviews complaining about bloated EMUI/android overlay. I'm thinking of moving from Samsung cos' I'm sick of the touchwiz bloat. Can any owners comment ?

    • +1

This gen of EMUI is apparently a lot less bloated from previous versions, the apps that are there can mostly be deleted.
With a launcher, I was able to get my app draw back.

  • +1

I'm surprised this received so many votes, considering that the LG G5 was offered at the same price a week ago

In a way this P9 is a poorer version of the Huawei 6P which keeps on popping up for $10-30 more (aus stock)

    or am I wrong??

    • +2

      You're right

The G5 blows this out of the water. Only issue is LG's reputation after the g4/v10 debacle

    • +2

Not everyone wants a phone with free bootloops built in.

  • Dumb question here, but what is the benefit of buying from JB as opposed to say Ebay where the phone can be $100 cheaper.
Is it the warranty? Or peace of mind?

    • +4

Buying from an Australian retailer gives you the protection of Australian Consumer Law whereas phones from ebay are likely grey/parallel imports which don't always have the same benefit. The ACL is very powerful—you can get refunds for major faults and potentially out-of-warranty repairs. I have got my Sony Xperia Z1 fixed after the 2-year warranty by using provisions of the law.

Another benefit is you can potentially claim the GST (through a business or Tourist Refund Scheme) which helps offset the extra cost over a grey import.

Personally I pay the extra for Australian stock wherever possible, it has been worth it for me.

  • at this price point also check out oneplus 3T
