  • Can anybody enlight me on whether it is worth buying it from personal experience?

      • +6

This is a system, not just a speaker.

        Some review comments

        https://www.dicksmith.com.au/da/buy/sony-micro-hifi-system-w…

        • I'm not convinced that those test freaks reviews are of this system.
Can't find the reviews on Testfreaks on google search.
And on Kogan they say 50 watts power - this model is 12 watts.

      • +7

Here is a measured opinion on the performance of the Logitech z623.

The verdict before DSP correction: The z623's are pretty awful. Turns music into movie special effects.

The verdict after DSP correction: Still sounds like three speakers instead of a musical performance.

        • aha, I'm just a freshman in this area. It did really good when I was watching movie. Maybe it is good for normal customers.

        • +2

Don't know why the down votes for providing a review of an item discussed?

    • +1

it depends on what where you will use it and your expectations.

      12W is not much power.

      Speaker Driver Size
      8cm
      Output Power
      Total 12W

      • Yeah, was about to buy - but boy, sounds like a really weak system. 12 watts! How does that compare to the 200 watt peak RMS systems of yesteryear??

        • +2

Probably about the same. So glad they stopped doing this or more likely stopped being allowed to do this. It started getting ridiculous with brands advertising 4000w peak rms. The only way you would ever get that much power out of these crappy systems is if there was massive power surge and the speakers blew out.

        • +4

@lemonato: A friend of mine used to say, "4000W ILS…" - If Lightning Strikes

        • It will be approx 25% as loud as a 200w RMS system.

    • Sony make good stuff, possibly the best when it comes to this sort of thing, however at $249 it is probably at the "value" end of the range. You can't lose though for $99.

  • Any way to connect this to an AV Receiver for better sound?

  • It's weak. Use it on bedroom when you are about to sleep. Won't hear the difference from $2,000 unit.

    • +5

It will help if you place it in the room.

      • superb

  • +1

What the heck. It's Christmas - bought. Hope I don't regret it.

  • Can it be connected to a TV ?

    • Same question. I would love to connect these to my PS3 OR TV :)

      • +2

        a manual is available

as far as i can see there is no 3.5mm or dual rca stereo input which means its a NO from me

also it looks like it uses propreitary speak cables connectors so again, NO

also i'm of the opinion that 12w is fine for a high efficiency bedroom type setup

it will hit 90-100dB no problem given the efficient speakers it has

but again a $99 system WITH DAB…. is what it is

      • +3

YES - it has an audio socket in at the back of the unit. So you can feed in audio from other devices.
        But no headphone out socket.

    • You could possibly connect your TV via bluetooth. Of course your TV would have to be able to transmit sound via bluetooth…

  • +1

It's weak, but for $99 you get USB, bluetooth, NFC and DAB, so it's not bad.

  • Wonder what the DAB and headphone DAC quality are like. It could suit a need for DAB radio -> headphones at work.

    • -1

      headphone DAC?

      • digital audio converter. There's one per analogue output. In this case, the one for the headphone port is all I care about because I'll only use headphones, not speakers.

    • +3

No headphone port :( Otherwise I would have ordered one.

      • Bluetooth?

        • +1

Someone will need to confirm if this can send audio to bluetooth headphones or just receive bluetooth audio from devices and play it over the speakers.

  • +1

As ling as it's going in a small room this is pretty good, but the fact is that that nearly everyone has a portable speaker and just runs everything from their phone, and if they were bothering to go to a fixed system it's for the power and quality, so it's a bit useless for most people. I actually have a great stereo from 20 years ago that's actually more useful once I put a Bluetooth adapter on it

    • Perfect for my wife to put in the kitchen. She can have her digital radio without stuffing around with phones.

  • +3

Lol, reminds me of the times when manufacturers used to advertise speaker power as some ridiculously high PMPO value as opposed to RMS.

  • +4

Plenty of questions on inputs/outputs etc…

    1. There is a 3.5mm input, but no output
    2. Speaker cables are proprietary plugs, but the plugs could easily be adjusted for any +/- speaker cable
    3. There's a digital audio and FM antenna plug on the rear also

    Some pics here will answer

  • I just bought it. Hopefully it will get here before Christmas. By the way, does it come with a remote control? It was not mentioned on the Sony website.

  • Just bought one, will post back here once I get it and how it all works out. A little worried what NFC means with an iPhone, but it looks like the Bluetooth will be good too.

    • All it does is pair the device and start the required Bluetooth mode. You are missing out on nothing. Use the Workflow app and make a Bluetooth workflow if you want.

  • Good for those twots that are well cultured in Tchaikovsky but not gonna suit your Slipknot and Marilyn Manson requirements.

  • Does this have a clock on it? Use as an alarm clock? or best to just bluetooth phone for waking up?

    • +1

      Clock, yes. Alarm clock, no.

  • Good price but would need headphone out and a remote control for me to considering buying it.

  • will these work as computer speakers?

    • +1

Yes. But not extremely well. If these are similar to my Sony mini DaB - they are EXCELLENT mid throw speakers but sitting right in front the quality will be mediocre.

These are IDEAL for a Kitchem radio.

  • I bought one and didn't have to login to the website to get the $99 price.

  • Bought one for the garage, got an old set of mission speakers for it if these speakers are no good, which seems to be the most complained about feature.

  • +13

Here is the instruction manual for your reference.

It has a remote control. In fact it does not fully operate without one.

It accepts an auxiliary input via a 3.5mm stereo socket located on the back of the unit. There is no headphone socket. The unit outputs sound only via its speakers.

It has a clock, a sleep timer and a "play timer". The play timer functions like an alarm clock. The unit does not display the clock unless you press a button on the remote, and then only for 8 seconds. I do not understand why the unit cannot set and sync its clock via the DAB time signal.

It accepts audio input from Bluetooth devices but it cannot output audio to Bluetooth devices. It supports A2DP profile with SBC (receives compressed audio signal roughly equivalent to 256kb/s MP3) and AVRCP profiles (remote control via BT). There is no MP3, AAC or aptX support via BT.

It can play audio CDs, and MP3 and WMA files on CDs.

    • thanks got one

    • +1

      thanks alvian.
Because it cannot be used as an alarm clock, now I can save $99 on something else this Christmas!

    • Does that mean I won't be able to play mp3 files thru speaker on my Nexus 5X via BT?

      • Is this what you mean? You have MP3 music on your phone and you want the music to come out on the Sony's speakers for better quality and louder sound.

Yes, it will work but your phone will have to decode the MP3 music file, then recompress the music into SBC, send it through BT to the Sony, the Sony will uncompress the SBC music and turns it into sound. There is a minor loss of audio quality as compared to a A2DP profile that supports MP3 natively.

  • What's the main difference between CMTSBT40D and CMTSBT20B (except output)?

    • At a glance, 40D plays DVD but has no DAB digital radio.

  • +1

Logged in to the Sony site and the price still showing as $249 [in cart, too].
    Edit: expired deal

    • Its not expired. You need to log in. Works fine for me.

      • The original deal expired and was relisted by Sony.

    • Definitely still working. Price changes once logged into MySony

  • Good price. No headphone socket is a killer though.

  • Ive just bought one, for the sake of DAB/bluetooth/USB, pretty good all round, but hoping to hook this up with my active speakers and sub set up.

Having speaker wire output, i was thinking of getting a converter to convert it to RCA, what do you all think about this Stringer car audio speaker wire to RCA converter?http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/181608032911

  • Is this deal over now? I just logged in and its back to $249..
