  • Had to click through because wtf is an Eco Switch?
Thumbnail image of the item itself rather than a thumbnail of "full warranty" might be more handy from a "I don't have one of these, what are they?" standpoint.
Seems like a nifty little thing though, cheers!

    Where are these made?

I've had 3 similar devices, and 9 (yes, 9) 'remote power switches' burst into flames.
All were purchased locally, and had Australian approval.
    So excuse me being cautious.

I have a hobbyist interest in electrical engineering, may I see a photo of the inside?
I just want to see things like join quality, wire gauge, etc,

    • Where are these made?

They mention on their site it was on the ABC's New Inventor's series some time ago. So I'd assume Australian made ?? But yeah, more info here would be nice.

      • 100% Australian designed, 100% Australian owned, made in China with 100% Australian Quality control

    • Hi Master Scythe. we've never heard of even one "exploding". Are you talking about EcoSwitches or something else? I can assure you if this was the case I would've heard about it. BTW they cannot "explode"!

      • Other brands. I wont name and shame becuase the Australian Owned company made it…. OK…. ish.
        refunds, free product, etc.

        No one said explode.

You say further down having them smoke or catch fire is "impossible", sorry, but any company with the attitude that faults, especially in an electrical device, is 'impossible' is usually hiding something.

Happy to see some schematics or internal photos before I make a judgement or not though.

  • Is there an RF version in the pipeline (433 or similar, not wifi router)?

    • See my post further down, it may do what you want.

  • So low tech these days. Just get Hue and Wemo products.

    • +2

Yeah spend 80 bucks when you could spend 20, great idea.

      • I order my hue stuff from OS and its cheap. The Wemo switches are also always on sale. I got mine for $40.

I've had one of these start smoking…

      Filthy habit

      • I'm sure it was an e-cigarette

    • See what rhangman writes below! Not possible. Perhaps you are confusing EcoSwitches with some kind of electronic gadget.

      • Well it happened.

I naturally don't have video evidence, because filming anything which is about to catch fire in your household isn't a good idea..

I sent you a message on 17/07/2015 when this happened, because I was happy to return to product to for inspection (so you could check the safety of your product and improve future models), but naturally I've discarded all four of the cables I purchased due to not wanting to risk a fire, and after you hadn't responded for a very long time.

Here's my order id (#4710) to prove I've purchased your product.

        • It would be interesting to see EcoSwitch's response to this.

    • Not surprised.
My experience isn't with this particular company, but the costs cut in the circuit to run the light bulb are often the culprit.
You very often get cheap joins on the mains too, creating high resistance points.

Any chance you can crack it open and take some pics?
I'd love a good quality solution for things like this, but so far, THOR 'eco' power boards are the only ones i've had 0 issues with.

You can buy wireless ones from Bunnings for less (no shipping), mine have worked very well.

Alas wireless ones need reprogramming after outages. And dont the remote controls need batteries?

      • Surprisingly our Arlecs have not needed rebinding after 2 blackouts of over 2 hours each!
If they did it takes about 10 seconds, press button on plug unit and then the controller button you wish to use.
Battery life on the transmitter should be should be in the years range at a guess, as power is only really used with a button press.

Alas wireless ones need reprogramming after outages

        No they don't.

However, turning off the power to appliances that are intended to be left powered up will… alas cause the appliances to need reprogramming after outages that you deliberately cause with the device in this deal.

  • I can vouch for the Arlec ones, ives used two (outdoor versions) flawlessly for 6 years to operate the transformer for the 12v pool/garden lights.

  • Had one for ages just so I could put a switch for some under cupboard LED lights in a convenient location. Not going to save much power these days turning most stuff off. Oddly got George W. Bush to thank for the one watt initiative which is at least partially responsible for standby power draws of around 0.3W these days. Means 2.6kW per year or around 66c saving if you switch something off rather than leave it on standby for the entire year.

Really can't see how/why it would start smoking or catch fire. It's essentially an extension cord with a switch and a neon bulb. Not much to fail.

    • Happened in the "Y" join. Was connected to a dishwasher and a timer.

  • i bought a few of these in a previous sale about 2 years ago, never had an issue with any of them, even though i use one of them many times a day.

  • What a pointless product.

Why would anybody want to turn off their wall socket like that?

Saving power ROFL… what a crock.
