Why vote me down for just asking a question?

You know the difference between a DSLR and a phone camera? Same goes for this…

    • Hey man. Because people are always going to want higher quality. Especially if they're an enthusiast. It's like saying: 'what's the point of buying a camera? Surely using a phone to take pictures would be fine?'

I do a bit of photography. The phone camera is NOTHING compared to my DSLR. It's the same here but with sound. Journalists and PIs as well would be interested in this.

    • Those that were interested in the nano iPod for ~$149 should have been interested in this unless they have very very small pockets. It will do what that can do and also things it couldn't even think of. If you are prepared to accept something a bit larger but with a bit more grunt, tripod mountable and cheaper [ US$79] the Tascam DR-05 is also a nice unit from the same people.

This one will give you much better quality.

    • -8

Yeah, but what for? What are you recording that requires this high quality?

      • +1

Law enforcement evidence and statement taking. Musicians.

      • Dragon for example…

      • +3

For times when you need high quality recordings, like a wedding video. I've often seen these strapped to the mic at ceremonies.

        • Which is funny because these won't be effective in that situation. You need to get the mic right under the sound source. Putting one on a camera will get a great recording of background noise and nothing else. It will be either unusable, or awful. You really need to put a boom over the couple or mic them up with lav mics.

Something is better than nothing though. But it's going to sound really ordinary mounted on a camera.

@Sxio: Agreed, but I meant the hand held mic used by the celebrant :)

        • +2

          @Sxio:
Someone's plugged a small Rode mic into this and used the zoom as the recording device because their RX100 doesn't have mic input

      • +1

I use it as an external mic for my SLR camera, recording lectures, and as a microphone for the PC.

      • Interesting.

      • Music ideas, or even Lectures… on a phone clarity can be a problem.

  • Yep much higher quality up to 24-bit/96kHz and stereo mics. I have the black version of this.

  • Musicians - this one any good at all for recording from sound sources such as amplifiers? I take it that it has inputs as well?

    • +1

Yes definitely, I have one of these. If you don't want to use the internal mics you use an external mic or any feed really eg. from a mixer. It has the standard 3.5mm input and gain control.

    • +1

it only has a 3.5mm input. It will do the trick but spending a bit more and getting one with XLR inputs will get you much better recording quality. If you only record music sporadically I wouldn't bother, but if you're doing it frequently it would be worth it.

      • +2

getting one with XLR inputs will get you much better recording quality.

Only if you get a good mic though. A cheap mic, regardless of the output connector, could sound worse than the built-in mics.

        • Yep, totally right. I should have said 'the POTENTIAL for much better quality'. A cheap mic will most likely always sound pretty rough.

  • +3

I use one to record uni lectures. The phone just doesn't do it right. I can record clearly from quite a distance and don't have to shove it under the lecturers nose.

DWI have it in black for $109 delivered (using $10 sign up bonus).

    • Enjoy $10 Off for your 1st time purchase with min 200 order value

Just did the sign up bonus and this is under the whited out code
      awwwww

Also 3.5% surcharge using PayPal and 1.8% surcharge using their Visa/MC payment system

      • Sorry I didn't realise the code is only good for $200 min order, that's a shame!

  • I have used these for running user studies, they are of fantastic quality! They have multiple microphones and can record voice from different directions with equal clarity.

Obviously, it's not for everyone, but those people who needs excellent quality audio for this price, would like the product :)

  • These are great for getting ambient sounds into recordings for those that are inclined. I prefer to use real recording equipment for music instruments.
