Excellent price for very good small camera. Unfortunately this low price may be confirming rumours that Nikon is discontinuing Nikon 1 series. See for example here: http://petapixel.com/2016/08/18/nikon-shuttered-1-series-lin…
Of course there is also another rumour contradicting the above and claiming that new Nikon 1 J6 Coming on CP+ Show in Feb 2017… so here you are, make your own decision :)How does this compare to the RX100 ?
Here's a very rough and crude comparison:
http://snapsort.com/compare/Nikon-1-J5-vs-Sony-Cyber-shot-DS…
Leaving aside price for one moment, the RX100's(i, ii, iii, iv, v) are altogether better cameras, as far I'm concerned.
I'm just looking for a travel camera around 400-500. Even the rx100 m1 is $600
So I'm not too sure which camera to get. Any other suggestions? I'm willing to wait to pay sales price. I will never pay RRPI got this for my girlfriend last Christmas. This camera is perfect for you. You can change lenses to get great photos in multiple situations but it is very small.
You can send photos to your phone from the camera which is useful for uploading to social media.
My girlfriend loves this camera. It might not be the best camera out there but for this price you get a good camera that's well suited for travel@TightAssDrake: I have no experience with the M3 but it looks like it's in the same category as the J5. I'd google search the two models and comparison and see which has features that suit you best.
The Nikon is really loved by my Gf. I'm not sure about technical features vs other camera but her photos come out really nicely. She is mostly shooting travel and food photos.
Ever since she moved to this camera from the one on her phone, her instagram photos have been getting more likes and more followers.
She only does simple edits with the instagram app using photos imported directly from the camera.
That's like comparing Apple to oranges. With the J5 and slow kit lens alone, the RX100 cameras would perform better. However the J5 can attach wide angles and telephotos, which the RX100 cameras can not have. So neither is better or worse, depends entirely on how you use it and what you plan to shoot.
There are five generations of the RX100, and it would take pages to compare all of them (or even just the latest DSC-RX100 V) to Nikon 1 J5. There are many detailed reviews on the net, Google it.
One major difference: J5 is interchangeable lens camera, RX100 is fixed (zoom) lens camera, which brings us to DUST on the sensor: in a fixed lens camera the lens acts like a miniature bellows, pushing out and pulling in air (and dust) when it's opened and closed. This is unavoidable (perfect seal would prevent the lens to move). Dust on the sensor can be easily cleaned if you can remove the lens (as in Nikon 1, for example), but can not be cleaned without expensive servicing and disassembling a fixed lens camera (as for example RX100).
thanks OP, grabbed one. Gonna force a new cam on my parents for Xmas, sick of their rubbish pics from their decade old unit!
Also comes with a 32gb sd card fwiw.it's a good deal if all you are looking for is a budget high end compact P&S, but the lens selection for this system is very limited and has not improved in recent years. The better lenses are quite expensive too.
Very good point about this camera. For those who's use aligns with what this camera does well i think this is a great choice.
Nikon 1 is currently the only 1in sensor size camera with interchangeable lenses. Better lens selection means larger sensor (at least APS-C), thus larger cameras, or using lens adapters, again: size increase.
m4/3 has a much bigger lens selection and no material size difference, with better IQ. You have to admit, the len selection for Nikon 1 is pretty poor.
You have to admit all other 1in sensor cameras offer only one build in lens. Increasing the sensor size typically improves IQ - this is trivial observation. Yes, there is size difference, try: http://camerasize.com/
@derek324: Give it a rest, you go and enjoy your 1" sensor that can change with average lenses, wow.
@JetLi: This is a thread about Nikon 1 J5 with 1in sensor, I am on topic, you are not. Play the ball (the point) not the Player (the person).
@derek324: Yeah keep pushing the fact this is the only 1" sensor with interchangeable lenses… So what if the lenses are mediocre and limited in range?, less just disregard this fact hey? You continue to bang on about a 1" sensor when m4/3 have bodies & lenses that are comparable in size, give the full picture that is useful to people considering this camera instead of pushing 'this is the only 1" sensor with interchangeable lenses' - this is hardly a valid reason to go out and buy this camera.
@JetLi: I presented easily verifiable facts relating to Nikon 1 with 1in sensor, which is the topic of this thread.
This thread is not about what would be the best camera for someone, it is also not about why 1in sensor is not as good as m4/3 sensor (which in turn is not as good as full frame sensor, and so on). You are clearly very keen to discuss the m4/3 - but you are completely off topic here. Try other place, and/or different thread.
You may also consider not downvoting my entries - I actually did not down voted what you posted. It was nice talking to you, have a nice day.
@derek324: Other posters have asked whether this is a good camera for their needs, have also raised up how it compares to other cameras, no one stated only provide me with alternatives that have a 1" sensor. I'm no m4/3 fanboy, but it's the obvious viable alternative if someone is after a small interchangeable lens system, what's your issue with this, this is not a 1" sensor forum? Please don't continue to take my comments out of context mate. You have a nice day too.
Last time this camera was posted here, I mentioned I have one and love it.
At this price, it's incredible value especially as a novice photographer. HIGHLY portable, and takes incredibly good pictures.
Also, you can buy adapters that will allow ANY LENS from any other manufacturer to fit this camera. (applies to other cameras too - just making the point that you can use this camera with any other lens, so if the physical size impresses you…then it's a good buy)
The 2.7x crop for other lenses makes it useless for anything other than telephoto.
Ticks plenty of boxes, but the 4k @ 15fps is such a killer :( Why on earth would they do that?
