Wow and just like that my ssd doesnt feel so fast.

I'm a little skeptical about how noticeable the performance difference is for an expensive SSD over a cheapish one

    • Performance not so much a few seconds i think but something also to think about is how long to ssd will last. Dependibg on how much data is written to the ssd seems to be the determining factor for ssds.

    • These SSD's use the NVMe interface rather than SATA which basically means they smash anything not using an NVMe interface.

Are there any cheap NVMe SSD's yet?

      • "Smash" is a pretty bad word to describe the situation. Despite what a benchmark program might try to infer, nvme m.2 drives are MARGINALLY faster than a decent SATA3 drive in most regular day to day tasks.

Go check proper reviews and pay attention to performance at Queue Depths from 1 up to ~16 (which is about 90% of any workload OzB readers would be doing). 4K workloads and mixed workloads will show you that most users will see little benefit from these drives as something like a OS drive or a gaming drive.

As for cheap nvme drives, yes, the Intel 600p series exists

  • Is 960 Pro worth $96 more than 960 EVO (at 512GB)?

    • Doubtful unless you're in need of the greater write endurance (400TB vs 200TB) or the 5 year vs 3 year warranty.

There's a (relatively) small performance increase but seriously… 3.2GB/s is probably going to be fast enough.

      • No, within the lifespan of the PRO drive, you will be able to buy higher capacity/higher performance drives down the track.

    $1600 for a 2TB drive…not in this lifetime!

  • For daily use, I highly doubt you will see any real-world differences between the two. The only people who would buy the expensive ones are enthusiasts or actual power-users who would benefit from specific benefits the Pro version has.

  • CPL has very similar pricing for those that like to pick up in VIC and aren't a fan or SE.

I have a 960 Pro - upgraded from an SSD. It's noticeable in day to day tasks but marginally so. It shows in games and anything intensive loading and Windows does boot faster.

I'm glad I bought one and upgraded it didn't feel like a wasted upgrade.
