sheesh - cheaper than metho !

Metho is $5/l, which is equivalent to 8 litres of wine. So still the bargain choice.

      • But you can blow flames with metho!

I've got a hangover just reading about it!

Sorry for noob question. Can we easily close and seal the remaining wine after open like bottled wine? 5 L is a lot to gulp.

    • +16

You can do what you want with it, it's not like you are buying it for the taste

      • +2

Yes, you can. Use it as a pillow too.

    • +1

You dont really open it, you just squeeze it and it pours out.

Goon was like water to me when i was a backpacker.

andri77, the wine uses a valve which releases the wine and causes the polyethylene bag to collapse. No air enters the bag, thus the wine does not oxidise and stays fresh. Contradictory to what you might expect, I find this a better option for a light occasional drinker as I can drink it at my own leisure without it going stale. I used to keep one box with me im my dorm when I was in uni. I actually enjoyed them more than the current bottles I buy because I'll now open a bottle, drink some, put the remainder in the fridge, and when I remember to have more, it has already gone stale. The casks on the other hand always had a consistent taste as it never oxidised. The actual lifetime storage of unopened casks is shorter than unopened bottles though. Thus buy to drink now not to store.

      • @IMFrugi Thanks much for your explanation. :) Just purchased some.

    • That was part of the, well… genius of the cask wine bladder. It's pretty much airtight, so while the wine's not great (not by the furthest stretch of the imagination), it's not going to get worse over time (well a reasonable time frame anyhow, if memory serves they do have a best before date). For day-2-day consumption though, you should be good (as good as goon gets) for weeks,

What an incredible Aussie invention! :D

    "wine"

  • Pity can't buy 4 at $40……

    • -1

      4 for $40 works…..as does 5 for $50

No need to spend $60 on the AMEX deal, spend $50, then get $15 and $5 off making 25 litres for $30. $1.20 per litre

      • +1

$5 off making total to be $45? Less than $50 minimum spend for amex?

  • +2

    Goonerific!

Who invented the first wine cask?
The process for packaging 'cask wine' (box wine) was invented by Thomas Angove of Angove's, a winemaker from Renmark, South Australia, and patented by the company on April 20, 1965.

Also cheaper than FIJI … on special btw at Coles at the moment .. $2/L!

Bought about 30L the last few days.

      • I'm getting g $2.86 per litre for the Fiji water. Is it still $2 or last weeks catalogue?

        • I bought some more in SA on monday night at $2.
Has been that price on special for about 1.5 weeks now.
I have cleared the shelves on 3 occassions over the 1.5 weeks :)

Even better at $1.20 per litre. 5 for $50 less $15 and $5

    • +2

But you wouldn't be able to get the $15 Amex credit and the $5 off BWS, because after taking off $5 you're back down to a total of $45 which doesn't qualify for the Amex deal (spend $50 get $15 for that one).

      • Yeah, got too excited about $20 off in one hit….bugger.

  • Omg lol are there any nice cask wines that I'm actually going to enjoy?

  • +1

Drink your hangover into next week.

    Red red wine.

  • "Andy, you Goonie!" Nice bargain!

  • Just letting you guys know Berri casks are available in 10 different flavours.

Other online specials are: Chivas Regal 12 YO for $41 a bottle (before discounts) and XXXX Gold 30 pack for $39 (before discounts).

Thanks, updated deal to link to the full range of Berri Estate casks.

      "flavours"

  • Don't know how long it will take me to have it all. Might take of with me in my gym “water” bottle. Thanks OP!

  • I remember one guy gave me a taste of this concoction he made at a party 7 years back. It was goon white or fruity lexia wine and tropical cordial and probably the right mixture of water to lessen the severity of sweetness, really went down well. Was like a fruity wine with a lower ABV that you could drink more of and not be so hungover in the morning, a drink to pace yourself.

    • The real trick is emptying out some wine, then putting your mixer in the bag.

You'll have a convenient pre-mixed goony drink to carry around during a party, and once you're done and ready to pass out you have a handy pillow ready to go.

    • I remember my first beer…

"Fruity Lexia casks are a perfect recipe for a successful gathering of young, sexy adults." Martha Stewart is never wrong.

    • Your mate took you back to the 80s.. the days of 'West Coast Cooler'

      • Me too - when I read the above I instantly thought "West Coast in a box!"

  • According to the Good Goon Guide:

Berri Estates Dolce Bianco - 3.5 stars
Berri Estates Fruity Gordo - 3.7 stars

Anybody have any experience with the others?

    • +2

After the first one, does it matter?

  • Thinking I should finally sign up for this 'Amex' thing. What is the best process? I was a little lost the last time I tried via Ozbargain to learn how to get and exploit an Amex card.

    • get an amex mate to refer you. they could get points. DJ Amex works edp., for grocery points.

  • +1

Instead of bottled water, I buy wine this week.

  • +1

A 3/5 Dolce Bianco 2/5 water mix makes an OK drink.
I've suffered some foul tasting bottled wines.
Those selling bastards will always pitch things high 'cause many people take comfort in the you get what you pay for mindset.

  • +2

Thank you. Now got to find space for 12 casks on top of the 8 casks of $12 De Bortoli from First Choice liquor last week.
    Mum is delighted.

    • As the Rolling Stones sang.

    • "Debauchery?"

      "No, De Bortoli!"

  • Is it only 30 litres or can I get more for this price? I want to bypass the next month or two.

  • I'm seriously thinking of getting an amex card just for the cheap goon. This is outrageous!

  • +3

Am I the only one who finds the juxtaposition of buying degenerate quantities of cheap wine with an amex hilarious ?

  • Quantity not quality!

  • Wine comes in a box?!

  • Am i the only one that uses this stuff purely for cooking?

    • Yes I keep a cask of 'dry red' just for adding to spaghetti sauce.

  • Just got an email from woolies to get 30% off wine by activating my everyday rewards card. Won't stack with the 25% but hey, saves an extra $1.50 on your 30 litres of goon

  • -1

The packaging even tells you what meal to have your wine with. They clearly know their customer's education level.

    • The last goon box I read 95%of the content was about the box, they barely mentioned there was alcohol inside.

      • Instructions on how to open?

        • that was a tiny bit of it, mostly about how much more environmentally friendly boxing wine is than bottling it

  • Anyone with a hills hoist up for a game of Goon of Fortune?

  • Looks like deal is expired.

    • Yeah, looks like BWS has taken it off the website. Seems like there's still stock in stores, and the catalogue special is meant to still be going. But BWS might have decided to pull it from the website only.

    • Deal is back now.

  • Maybe I'm an idiot (ok I am) but I add the 3x berri case's (I've tried 3 of the same type and 3x different types) to the cart and try to checkout but the price never goes down to $30. I can add the $5 off coupon but thats hardly worth it. Can someone tell me what I'm missing other than my brain on how to get this sorted?

    • +2

      Same happened to me.
