I honestly can't recommend LIFX with the experience I've been having so far with my 4 white 800 bulbs.

4 bulbs, 3 in the kitchen in a group and 1 in a lamp in the lounge room. For the first few days they worked great, I set them on basic schedules with IFTTT. After a couple of days, a single kitchen light wouldn't turn on with the group, forcing me to manually turn it on.

I moved away from IFTTT to Home Assistant to remove the cloud connection and talk to the bulbs API directly over LAN and now the problem is worse. Only a single light automatically turns on in the kitchen & the lamp won't automate either.

When the lights are turned on via API, they identify is being "on" but are completely off. I have to manually toggle them on/off to get them to come on.

The android app is terrible. It often won't talk to the bulbs forcing me to force close the app and toggle my wifi on/off. I've found it to be slightly more reliable if I remove android N battery optimization from the app.

Last time I reset the bulbs in an attempt to fix them I couldn't add them back to my network as the "bulbs are too hot". Turns out they released an update to the app with a bug which always identified the bulbs as hot. I had to go and get a previous version apk from aptoid just to get the bulbs back online.

I'll be in contact with LIFX support this week to try and resolve it but I expect I'll be refunding them and opting for Hue.

Ive also got the quantity you have but have never had any problems. I wonder if there is a gremlin in your network which is causing issues? The LIFX android app, for me works flawlessly, and now coupled with an amazon dot is even better.

      • I have a mate with a bunch of bulbs and he's not having issues as bad as mine. I can't put my finger on any obvious issues and I don't really feel like packet sniffing to get to the bottom of it.

R7000 nighthawk which by its specs allows up to 32 wireless clients per 2.4 or 5GHz band, I have around 15 total and the bulbs are less than 5 meters away from it.

Everything works fine manually, automation has been nothing but a headache.

I might give the nighthawk an update and see how it goes whilst I wait on LIFX support.

        • It looks like you defiantly have the hardware to support it but gremlins can exist any where. If you have an old crappy wifi router may be give that a go for trouble shooting purposes

        • I have the R7000 set up with 3 Color 1000s (first gen) and 1 Color 1000 (second gen) and I have absolutely ZERO issues with mine. I also use IFTTT which seems to work every time for me, only some minor iPhone GPS refresh issues.
LIFX offer 2 year warranty, why don't you contact them and see if there is any known issues with the White 800s? They are apparently pretty good to deal with, and based in Melbourne too.

        • @Bryceous:

Yeah I agree. Have heard their support is great, I put in a ticket this morning and shall see how I go.

        • @Cozza38:
I had an issue with one out of 4 purchased. Their support is the best among many other companies I dealt with.
It is odd to request to support a buld,,

        • @Cozza38: they are actually really great, I had problem with my 2 800 bulbs kept disconnecting from the cloud. Sent them a few logs from the apps and they sent me 2 new bulbs, did not even ask to return the faulty 2 and told me to recycle them (dont know how to recycle but anw). LOL
The 2 new bulbs work great.

    • Similar to what I am seeing..

I only have 2 LifX whites in the living room and they are in a group. My morning turn-on schedule (not IFTT) always turns on only one of the lamps, the other one doesn't. Funny thing is other schedules (for e.g. turn on in the evening) works perfectly. I am in touch with support and will have to troubleshoot this further. It's not too bad in my case as most schedules work as expected.

I also moved to Home Assistant but none of my triggers work as expected. I am going to reset HA to very basic triggers and see if that works. Would love to get HA automation working so I don't have to rely on the cloud. For now, just using HA to turn on lights manually.

      • I'm glad I'm not the only one, I've been having a hell of a time trying to solve it.

HA is great, I've been really enjoying it. The bulbs just won't automate correctly from IFFT or HA. All of my scenes and groups work without an issue when triggered manually.

The bulbs are all on static leases and are not experiencing network dropouts. I even wrote up a quick scripts to ping them every 30 seconds to try and keep them "awake". Not one dropout but still won't turn on via automation.

The bulbs turn off via automation perfectly though.

        • My HA turn off automation worked one night but not anymore. :-(

Are you using transition for the HA automations? Tonight's experiment for me is to remove all transitions and check if that works. Also must turn off all LIFX schedules to ensure they are not interfering.

My OH's current favourite thing to ask is "When are the lights coming on?" :-D

        • +1

          @randombrick:

I think I might have a 5 second transition on HA. I didn't on IFTTT which might explain why things have become worse since moving to HA.

I'll try turning them off tonight, good idea :)

I have a 30 second off transition which works flawlessly, but that setup is a mix of Android Tasker and IFTTT masker channel.

        • @randombrick: Little update for ya: removed the 2 second transition on my automation and the lights have worked without a hitch tonight. Will see how it goes in the coming days.

        • @Cozza38:

Hmmmm. No transition is not elegant but can live with it, I suppose.

Mine was an incorrect config for scenes. Missing square brackets around the rgb value. Or so I thought.

Lights dim and lights off worked without a hitch last night but the lights didn't come on this morning. I tried manually trigger the automation but that didn't work either.

I didn't remove the transition cos I thought I had fixed it up. :( Will try again tonight.

        • @randombrick: I'll be looking at using the f.lux sensor to replace transitions once I can confirm they are 100% the problem. https://home-assistant.io/components/switch.flux/

        • [@Cozza/comment/4197334/redir):

I might attempt that once I have a working config..

My current theory is that transition borks things if the lights are currently off. Will test my theory tonight.

        • @randombrick: I was discussing with a mate today whom also has LIFX lights. He mentioned that if he set the lights brightness to under 20% and then turned it on, it would not light up. I guess a transition could have a similar problem as it starts at a low brightness.

Something else for you to ponder :)

        • @Cozza38:

This probably makes sense - I guess the way to get it working would be to turn it on at a brightness over 20% and then another action to fade it to the desired level.

This 20% thing may also mean that if a previous automation faded my lights to less than 20% and then turned off, then next turn on automation may fail especially given the issue I found - https://github.com/home-assistant/home-assistant/issues/2472 and https://github.com/TangoAlpha/liffylights/issues/1. Probably relevant and specifically references transitions being affected. I am tempted to fix the liffylights library for myself but will have to find time.

        • @randombrick: LIFX replied to my support request today. I explained the issue and hopefully they can get back to me if it's a bug or API/HA issue.

Last night everything worked without a hitch so I'm pretty confident transitions are the problem.

      • For me the schedule works but it won't work if the internet has been shaped for some reason, even though it should all be local traffic? I wish the timer was built into the bulb instead of the app. Maybe the app is crashing too because Pokemon Go is using all the ram? I have no idea how these bulbs actually work.

        • All cloud based it seems, as I found out when I lost internet for a few days and none of my bulbs turned on or off on schedule any more.

        • +1

@bamzero: It depends on what your using to control them. Most services (IFTTT and probably LIFX App) are Cloud Based.

More dedicated appliances like Home Assistant or the multitude of LIFX automation scripts on github use the LAN API and don't require internet at all.

        • @Cozza38:

Yeah, I'll definitely check out Home Assistant. Got an old RasPi sitting there not doing anything so might drop it on that.

Just hadn't occurred to me that the app was only setting schedules in the cloud. Had in the back of my mind that it was storing schedules on the bulb itself.

        • @bamzero: I think they just recently made an RPi image for Home Assistant.

I'm not a big fan of locking into a certain ecosystem so HA is great to bridge it all together. It's pretty solid software. If I get my bulbs stable I'm planning to hook up an echo dot which HA has some compatibility for as well.

        • Schedules are almost certainly cloud based.

    • I find IFTTT fairly unreliable. Yonomi is a better solution in my opinion.

      • I moved from IFTTT to Home Assistant which talks to the bulbs directly via LAN API. It's reliable as can be but hasn't helped resolve the automation issue.

Hi Cozza38, Sorry to hear about your issues. Some people do have issues with the White 800s for a variety of reasons. Sounds like you are technically minded enough to have tried most things to fix them so email the crew at [email protected] and they will sort you out accordingly.

      • Hi Kavalier,

I logged a support ticket this morning. Was planning to do it last week but was very busy. Ticket # is 193633.

        Thanks for your reply.

    • That's pretty rough. I've been fortunate — I have about 20 LIFX bulbs around the house and have never had an issue. Used with Android app, Home Assistant, and more recently Amazon Echo Dot, with no issues.

  • BTW, any one know the diff between the Gen 2 and Gen 2 bulbs? I couldn't find much on it.

    • You mean Gen 2 and 3? 45 lumens!

      • Oops, yeah that. I did notice the slight lumen increase, but figured there must be more to it than that.

Maybe the rep will drop by…

        • I'm guessing they have Apple homekit hardware inside, but they're still working on the software so can't actually announce it yet.

        • @damion: Hey all, Can't confirm the above but lots of work happening to get integration sorted across all major players with new products. And of course the LIFX + has the infrared channels to help increase your home security cameras at night.

        • @kavalier27: When I saw the name I thought they had infra red remote control. Would have been interesting and useful to program it to pick a button signal from my TV my remote.

Also those down-lights are taking a long time to come to fruition.

        • @damion: Now that would be great. But I have five color men 2 bulbs, so it wouldn't do to have half my bulbs HomeKit compatible and half of them not. I really wish they discounted the old gen 2 bulbs more because I'd be happy with five more of them at $30 each.

        • +1

@AustriaBargain: Siri, turn half my lights on!

  • +2

I reckon they will have some good deals on the gen 2 when they are trying to clear stock. In addition i dont have any dumb light sockets left, il have to build an extension to be able to buy more

  • I'm ticked that the referral codes seem to only be have been in emails sent out to a few buyers, can't generate one from anywhere else.

    • I don't think they even have referral codes, you just need to start a referral account or something right?

      • I got a bunch of referral codes emailed to me recently after having bought the $14.95 white bulbs.

        • When were the white bulbs available for $14.95?

        • @damion: I've just checked. It was actually USD$14.95 for one bulb delivered (USD$19.95 - $5 coupon). You needed to use different accounts to re-use the code. They killed that pretty quickly.

          Around 17 October.

        • @t3chshopper: ahh right, yeah. By the time I used the code, it had the $30 minimum so you had to buy at least 2 bulbs.

    • You can hand out my referral code if you want to :)

  • Fantastic. Been waiting for the LIFX Strip to go on sale.
