  • this is the newer version vivo, it has a much better screen on it and is actually quite good for a cheap tv and also has a completely different design and stand. also uses alot less power then the previous version. make sure you get the newer version when buying!!!!

    • snow, are you sure? do you mean it's newer than the previous post? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/25530?
      Seems that both are PDP42HD

no this is the OLD one. the new 42" vivo is a 1080p lcd.
also this isn't a special price, is the standard price for the 42" vivo plasma.

      • guys i work at dick smith. this tv has new software in it that makes the screen look so much better, also the energy rating is down to between 400-500, cant remember exactly

        • Haha snow. I kinda sensed you work with ds from your first post. :)

  • -2

    rectangular pixels

  • It's not on special it just looks like they have dropped the price down from $599. If you wait a couple of weeks Dick Smith will have a sale with 10-20% off and you might pickup the TV for around the $400 mark.

    • Sale in a few weeks time? How you know? You should post that in Ozbargain then. The Australian financial year end sale has ended right?

I got this Dicksmith brochure on promotion from 20/6/10 to 2/7/10 and this TV is inside there.

      • Do you know the financial year ends 30 June? And there is generally sales afterwards to stimulate spending.

  • err, 1024x768 res? That's not widescreen

HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY IT, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS 42' 1366X768 PLASMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • +1

some plasmas do not have square pixels

they are rectangular to get that widescreen image from 768p

of course you will not find a 1,366 x 768 plasma for $499 either

  • Hard to vote positive when COTD are doing 42" 1080p 100Hz LCDs (of obviously questionable quality like this) for sub $598 or whatever.

This Plasma has been $499 before too.

    • Your point is valid, however it's worth noting that the ~$598 COTD sets last offered were in fact 50Hz units (if they were 100Hz Id've grabbed one myself with the $99 off code); and also required $99 worth of delivery!

Please also bear in mind that DSE sells the Vivo 1080p 50Hz 42" LCDs for ~$697! ;)

    not a bargain

Plasma is dead technology, I'm not gonna buy this even if it is cheaper price let alone this price. No special at all.

    • +6

Plasma is not dead technology, the best plasma TV's are still better tahn the best LCD/LED TV's for overall picture quality. Granted they use a bit more electricity, but that is a price I am willing to pay to have the best.

Agree 100% having owned plasma then LCD I was very disapointed with LCD and went back to plasma best decision I made

        • Yeah, yeah and Coke's way better than Pepsi, Xbox beats whatever, Mac is cooler than Windows, blah blah blah! It's all subjective, and it's horses for courses!

For instance, I've got nice, bright, sunlit living room which I don't intend to darken & lose all that glorious natural light just for the sake of a TV; therefore, LCD's my bag, baby! ;)

Compare the two technologies in very dark environments & you've got quite a different story however, so it all comes down to personal preference!

  • I saw this, 690 kw per year… isnt that a bit too much?

    • I checked yesterday, it's 250W

      • he means the kh rating, which is a sticker on the front of the tv which tells you the yearly average of power consumption. not how many watts it takes to run it.

why my previous comment doesn't show up here?

    • At the top before the first comment, tick on 'show all hidden comments'. There you go.

      OMG so many negatives! ;)

  • This is like 42 inch at $499. It's HUGE! 42 inch!! I am watching Korea v Uruguay on a 14" - 15" old tv now. So you can imagine what it feels like to watch it on 42". Bliss! If this is not a bargain, I don't know what is.

Use it for 2 years then buy a new next tv at $499.

(wondering what will happen to all these mega tvs in 2 years time. Do we have enough space in our dump yards or land fill. Man these things need to be recycled properly. It's a scary thought!)
