  • Is this basically a chromecast with extra features?

    • +1

Yep, CC with it's own onboard apps (and a remote!), also allows you to view Amazon Video

So sorta is, sorta isn't, in that you don't just cast to it, you can still view it like an Apple TV/WDTV

  • This looks like the older version to me. Still a good deal and better than a chromecast.

  • Are those 500+ channels available to Australia though?

    • Just going off Q&A's here:

definitely yes ,I used mine when I traveled to Africa ,it worked fine,no problem at all.

I use a Roku in Ireland and have a Proxy server to enable me to get service on USA roku sites. Other services will allow you to get UK Roku services. Register your Roku on The USA or UK site as appropriate

      • So it sounds like a VPN or some similar workaround is required?

        • +2

Seems like it was for 1, not for the other :/

And depends on what Amazon does over the next month or 2, what with everyone wanting to view The Grand Tour

        • @Spackbace:
According to this recent guide getting the channels is a lengthy process :(

There are warnings on Whirlpool about using Roku here.

Netflix limits Australian use to 1090p content only. This is because officially, on the Telstra T Box is the Roku available here. You'll need to use a VPN to access the US Netflix to get 4K (if you need that).

There are no local catchup apps like ABC iView, Plus7 etc available. They might be available for the Telstra Roku, but that won't work with a VPN configured Roku.

There's also reports of Roku's disabling apps if you don't maintain your US VPN. For example, if you setup your Roku for US apps, then turn off your VPN and login to Roku, they will detect you're no longer in the US, and turn your account to "international" version, which will restrict you from the US Roku App store.

That's what I've managed to learn, although I don't own a Roku so happy to be proven wrong. I'm personally tossing up between a Roku and Amazon Fire TV.

      • I have both, I up/side graded to the Roku. It was easier for the household to use.

Nexus player used to have amazon prime (smart TVs app port/sideload), but they closed that loophole :<

        • Nice. Do you constantly need to use a VPN with your Roku?

        • @philhawthorne: I use smart DNS which my IP is occasionally not associated, no issues in the few months I've had the Roku.

I think the better job you do on the sign up, the better it'll behave (I had one account not work at all, then signed up for a new account and reassociated the device). So that's always an option too.

        • @philhawthorne:
killed my vpn months ago use roku daily , no probs

        • @hrcdan: Any work-around for the clock being in a US timezone? :)

        • @Lukian:
          not sure , never noticed
