  • Good price for a99ii preorder….. Still out of my price range thought! http://www.georges.com.au/index.php/sony-alpha-a7r-mark-ii-m…

    • and nary an A mount lens to be found :( (I have an A99)

      • Gumtree and eBay are made for lenses! Optical physics hasn't changed much in a long time! I picked up a 2470 f2.8 ziess for 1k about a month ago, looks a bit out of place on my a55 though!

  • Considering that Sony Ebay sells a refurbished A6000 Body Only at $503~ (IIRC) everytime there's a 20% discount promo, does that make the Sony A6000 Camera with PZ 16-50mm OSS lens at $762 a good deal?

    • If you're prepared to wait for the refurb body to surface again, and don't mind a second hand lens, then get the 16-50mm off ebay. Its the "kit" lens, so there are always a ton of them being sold for $200 or less.

IMHO, unless you want the compactness (which is the reason I still occasionally use mine), skip the 16-50mm and get the 18-105G off ebay during the next site-wide discount - should be between $500 and $600-ish from TW/HK sellers. Its a good lens, and has a super-convenient range which makes it the "one lens" you use by default.

      • Thanks. Personally, I don't mind a refurbed body and used lenses. I have a Nikkor 24-70 bought used, and it still works perfectly for the past 3 years. Having said that, I'm getting this for the wifey, as there are times I am not around to shoot photos of our kids during school activities etc, and she's not a fan at all of bulky DSLRs (I own a Nikon D600). Figured the compact kit lens would be suitable enough for her most of the time.

I'll have a look at the 18-105G though. There are times I find my DSLR setup rather heavy — and inconvenient to lug around.

        • Ah yeh, in that case, the 16-50mm might be the better option. On the A6000, its a killer compact combo - adequate to quite good image quality (at least mine is, when stopped down to F6.3 or F8).

The 18-105G on the other hand is bulky, makes the A6000 a bit lopsided, and probably isn't a combo you'd toss in a handbag without thinking about it.

If you want to push the size down a little bit more, look at the A5100 - same guts as the A6000, but no viewfinder, and a smidge smaller all round.

        • A5100 also has the tap to focus touch screen, which is an appealing feature to some.

I paid about $900 for my A6000 from JB and that was pre A6300/6500 release and during stock shortages. I would expect coming into Christmas, with two newer models out there should be some pretty good deals coming up on the A6000. By memory, from my previous research it was around last Christmas that Sony did some great deals, which I think were cashback offers and became even better when combined with other store/eBay sales.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds to me like you want a good quality camera but with a point and shoot feel? Then probably just save a few more $$$ and grab a A5100 as qwijibo said.

        • @PeteM: Thanks. I guess I'll wait until next month then.

As for A5100, I did consider it but given that I expect to be using this camera as well — as an alternate to my bulky DSLR — I think the added features (EVF, faster fps, hotshoe, higher ISO etc) of the A6000 should be worth the extra cost.

  • Sony's high-end lenses are awfully expensive compared to the Canon/Nikon equivalents, considering they don't even have to pack IR circuitry/optics into the lens…
