Who Is Your Internet Provider and How Much Do You Pay? What Are Your Reviews about Your Current Provider

So.. I am planning to move in to my own home soon.

I was planning on what internet service provider to get and other nitty gritty things.

I found a lot of fake reviews posted by PR agencies on product review. These days there are a lot of small resellers that have entered the market. Barefoot, boom telecom, mynet, mint, mate, tangerine, lizzy just to name a few.

I'd like to know are you with one of these providers or the old stalwarts like telstra, optus, iinet, tpg etc.

How much do you pay and how would you rate it?

iinet 200Gb naked $50 - no issues to date (see below).
voip has never worked for us due to being 7.5km from the exchange

We are in SA and we were with Adam who were absorbed a while back. We haven't had the need to use the help systems since the absorption. Adam were very good for the 9-10 years we were with them.
December last year our 20gb plan was upgraded to 200 at the same $50/month.

    • if you don't mind me asking what is the speed you achieve 7.5km from exchange?

      • +1

        sustained download speed of 300.

when we first moved in in it was half that.

we've been there for 4 1/2 years with 3 line repairs in the first 2-3 years, none since.

      • Better asking how far is he from a RIM or CMUX…
I'm nearly 5km from my exchange but connected to a CMUX but often I download over 1mbp/s because the CMUX is only just down the road

ADSL2 speeds nearly die completely if you are 4km+ from the exchange if you are directly connected to it (not through a RIM or CMUX).

        • Only going from the original info that they stated…

    • I am in much similar boat as sandp in SA as well. I am also with Adam and for about 12 years. I am 4.5 kms from exchange and provider is Adam.
      Here are some stats:

      Plan: AdamEzyChoice 400GB
      Cost: 50 AUD per month
      Download: 5.5 Mbps
      Upload: 0.83 Mbps
      Latency: 16ms
      Jitter: 4ms

      No issues. Perfect service.

    • I'm on a grandfathered Adam Naked plan too ($60/month) 500GB - it works perfectly all the time and I certainly wouldn't move until I get NBN because there's not really a better deal around for a quality ISP right now.

      1.5km from exchangem 16mbit down / 2mbit up (annex m)

    • I'm in SA and with Nuskope.
      600gb a month
      99.95 per month
      30 Mbps down
      4-5 Mbps up

Not sure on the latency hitter as not home to run a test.

  • $70 p/m bundle with PAYG calls 25/2 NBN, unlimited data - TPG

have no complaints with TPG, they came at the appointed time for setup, and when the technician left, it wasnt working so i called TPG up and they talked me through fixing the problem. Speed all that pretty good, a up and go sometimes but not sure if its my router, which is about 4 years old.

  • +1

iiNet $99p/m for 100/40, 1000gb on Opticomm fibre.

    • I have this deal on NBN FTH.

      • You can upgrade to unlimited at no extra cost in case you hadn't realised.

        • Eh, I've never made it anywhere near the limit, usually only use a few hundred gb.

        • -2

@lupiter: u can only download so much p03n before you get sick of it

      • I have the same with Skymesh for $79

    • I am very jealous

    • How do you get this price? Website has $119/m

      • They have since raised the price, I've had the plan for 3 years now.

  • +1

I'm paying $73 per month home phone line and 100gb ADSL 2 internet bundle with Helstra.
i'm somewhere between 4-4.5km from the exchange living inner melbourne 12km from the CBD.

    • Are you getting the free local call and $2 max to mobiles? I am on this but got that upgrade to 200GB. I thought all got it.

      • no all calls extra.

  • +2

the most important thing is finding out what kinds of internet are available at your new place. Ideally you'd want fibre NBN or telstra cable. Fibre to the basement VDSL from either NBN or TPG is also pretty good.

  • iiNet $59.99 per month for 200GB plus unlimited local/national VOIP with reasonable speeds in inner south-west of Sydney

Shit customer service these past 18 months but staying with them for I am not on contract.

    • I'm on this plan in Brisbane, also getting reasonable speeds and not locked into a contract as I've been with them for 6 years.

  • +3

I have a choice of ADSL at 6Mbps or Telstra cable 100/2.5 1000GB (uploads counted) for $109.95 So no choice at all really.

Telstra cable itself is superb most of the time (other than early evenings sometimes) delivering solid 12 MB/s download per second. Note that they throttle Netflix because they sell Foxtel though.

Their sales team are complete scum and will try to get you to pay more including just signing you up for more "accidentally". I went through many months of being jerked around by Telstra and I think they're scum who for some reason can attempt to defraud customers and notho9ng happens like jail time or hell even fines…

Also you will need to buy a seperate router to properly use their service for some things such as Bittorrent so try and get that for free. Also try and get technician (if required) for free and setup costs waived.

Note that there is a difference between "Telstra cable" and "NBN that uses Telstra cable".

    • You really think they throttle netflix?

      • +3

        For me netflix works perfect.

        • More likely the upstream contention is getting away on them in some areas. I've never seen problems outside of peak viewing hours (8-10pm) so I'm pretty sure the throttling is not logic designed to do restrict traffic -why would you do it like this*.

          • Ok, so yes, there is always the possibility that it could be ineptly implemented logic failing to throttle the way it should (only since we're talking Telstra did I think to add that caveat).
      • This is according to Netflix ISP test and maybe they've lifted their game. TPG was best, Telstra somehow managed to perform worse than Exetel lel.

    • Would you mind tell us what's the difference?

    • Ive got the same two options!
Ive got telstra cable with the speed boost and honestly in love.
Telstra with foxtel and cable is $99 + $20 speed boost :(
TPG with 500gb and roughly 6mbps and constant drops for $99.10
      Was a no brainer!

  • Spintel ADSL2+ unlimited @ $55/m including line rental. Same speeds as the best Exetel used to provide, without the noticeable throttling around 4pm-midnight every night. Like many, this will suffice whilst we're waiting on NBN…

    • Hey stew what kinda speed test results for u get?

      • Terrible; tops out around 5-6Mbps at best…but that's more my line & distance to exchange than ISP. At least Spintel are consistent; it's that speed any time day or night…unlike towards the end of my Exetel tenure, when it was well & truly sub-1Mbps during peak times.

For reference, I have a 4G router in another property running Ovo (Optus 4G) & it absolutely smashes my home ADSL connection. :'(

I'm just toughing it out til NBN.

        • My parents are with spin and get the same speed. They are 1.5km from exchange direct line, approx 2km from exchange according to adsl exchange. How far r u from exchange?

        • @cloudy: Pretty similar stats here:

          Line of Sight: 1425 m
          Estimated Cable: 2209 m
          Estimated Attenuation: 31
Estimated Maximum Speed: 12666 (I wish)

Apparently the NBN build has started in my area, so fingers crossed it won't be too long now…

        • @StewBalls:

Yep, similar stats. Hopefully nbn won't be long for you :)

  • I am with Belong on ADSL, getting close to line connect speed outside of peak times, ie. from about 6pm to about 9pm due to congestion. I didn't have this problem when I was with TPG, but maybe it is because they are slow all the time? :) With TPG, I used to be connected at about 6Mpbs, but when downloading stuff I rarely get anything close to that.

Belong is not the cheapest nor the best, but their customer service is good, so I will stick with them for a while.

  • TPG Unlimited ADSL2+ @ $60/m including line rental. Out of contract now and apparently HFC shouldn't be too much further away.
3.4km from exchange, sync speed at 6mb/s

    • +1

I am on this and damn it sucks. I think I am 4.6km from the exchange. Max d/l I can get is about 500kb/sec :(

      • Yep, though when Netflix was released in Australia my peak period speeds with my old provider dropped to 0.2mb/s. TPG have at least managed to keep my speed consistent through peak periods.

      • Same.

      • 500kb from the speedtest, or download stuff rate (sorry my terminology is pretty spotty) . i am not sure how far i live from the exchange but my speedtest dl rate was 2-4mb if i was lucky. could only download stuff at max 300kbps on TPG adsl. but when i changed to NBN, its been pretty spot on with the speed they advertised, so cant really blame the provider on this, just my location

        • I agree. Unfortunately I can't get cable in my area and NBN seems a way off. Previously with the same TPG ADSL deal and <500m from the exchange I was getting great speeds so distance is a major factor in ADSL connections.

    • what you mean, shouldn't be too far away? Does this mean your area already had HFC? GO input your address in on Optus and Telstra website and see if you can get cable.

      • I'm in an MDU so cable runs down the street but not to the MDU group. NBN will connect the group up when it upgrades the HFC. Slated for 16Q4 and they've started work so should be done by mid 2017.

    • The place I just moved into is on a RIM. The neighbours all reckon they'd be lucky to crack 3.5Mbps. I didn't take the chance and just went with Optus Home Wireless. 200gb for $60 month bundle and constant 12Mbps any time of day and 16ms

      • Sounds like a good option for you, I'm in a mobile blackspot so I don't get any cell coverage at all.

  • +2

    Telstra cable 100Mbps, 1TB allowance, $130 monthly, use about 200~400GB per month…

  • +1

Telstra Cable + Speed Boost 100/2.5, 1000GB, Unlimited Local Calls + Line Rental, $99p/m. Super happy with constant 10+Mb/s downloads, only thing I wish is that they would offer us more than 2.5mbps upstream :/

    • +2

I'm on that bundle too, but it costs me $119 (it's actually showing as $120 on their web site now), despite getting a $20 discount for the 24-month contract. How did you get it for $99?

      • +2

        There is no "that bundle".

Telstra sales just try to screw you for as much as possible while duping you into believing you're getting a good deal by giving you upgrades. They do this by changing around the various incentives and costs both in the telephone sales process and on the online process.

You can be paying as much as $149.95 for 33Mbit 200GB with ~$550 setup/modem fees on a 24 month contract.

Or as little as $109.95 for 100Mbit 1000GB no setup 24 months like me.

        • Of course there is "that bundle". It's on their web site. The price one pays for it (or any other combination of services) is another issue, and as you say, can vary quite a bit.

        • $80 pm, 100/2.5, 500Gb, phone line, 24 mth contract.

A day after I signed on a flyer appeared in my letterbox informing me NBN was now available in my area. However the NBN deals aren't really any better anyway (in fact more $). Except for the new mob who are starting in Feb offering 100/40 unlimited for $60.

    • how did you avoid paying the extra $20/month for speed boost? It's $99/month + $20 for the speed boost like emibel19 was saying.

      • +1

You ask them to include it for free. It works. Tell them you have friends/family who get it free.

        • +2

Thanks! Worked like a charm! They said I already had a $20/month discount which brought it to $100 + $20 speed boost. But I told them I heard people have got the $20 speed boost waived off. So now it's only $100 a month :)

        • +1

          @BlazinPast:

          Awesome :)

  • +3

Exetel, this page explains it better than I can: https://www.exetel.com.au/broadband/adsl

It's not the fastest internet around, but it's unlimited and pretty damn cheap.

    • -4

Do not go with Exetel unless you enjoy not using the internet at night because it won't work.

      • +4

I have 0 problems with using the Internet at night, and I've been with Exetel for just over 2 years.

        • I've been with them for years. Their helpdesk are useless - you can put in an online ticket, but no one will look at it for days unless you call and spend 30 minutes on hold. They'll then often reset the port and not check that it's working afterwards - forcing you to ring again and spend another 30 minutes on the line.

There are times when the connection slows down, but it's not normally too bad. I only get a 7Mb connection from my house anyway.

TLDR: I wouldn't connect with them now, but I'm too lazy to change away from them.

      • +1

The only problems I have had with exetel is with the isp provided modem. Once I upgraded that to a nighthawk d7000 my internet speed has been consistently been around 86Mbps down and 35Mbps up. Before upgrading the modem, my internet would slow down frequently, sometimes down to 1Mbps, but now my internet is blazing fast!!

        • i hate exetel since their new management. Not even cheap with crap service

  • +9

    Fibre to the building (wondercom)
    100m up/40m down, unlimited data
Unlimited calls and 100min international free
    $59.90/month
    No congestion 24/7

    • +2

      Amazing value.

    • That's amazing

    • I have been using them since late 2014 (was still TPG) and there hasn't been a single issue so far. Got 90m-95m up/30m-38m down and downloaded TBs each month. Couldn't be happier for 59.90. I hardly use the phone though.

    • +3

      I'm so jealous.

  • $30 TPG adsl2+, i download at 400kb/s due to distance from exchange. have considered telstra cable for over 4 months but it's x3 the cost @ $90 :/

  • +1

Currently Exetel for a few more days anyway.
Living in Canberra NBN subburb in aprtment block so decent congestion
    *NBN 40/100
    *79.95 Per Month
    *500GB Per month.
    *Had for a year.
*think setup fee was like 180
*Month - Month plan - No exit Fee.
    *Switching For below reasons
    - Speeds get as low as 16MB per second during peak period
Spoke to other providers and they said theyre not offering enough bandwith.
    - They choke your download speed - Steam was especially bad for this, would start downloading and watch it go from rediclous speeds to a fraction of the starting speed.
    - Going through VPN would fix this

    Pros'
    Cheapish -
Easy to setup and view usage etc.
    Pretty easy all round

    Cons - See above

Switched to Aussie Broadband - but they havnt sent me my details yet to connect the router - so logged a Ticket to get those.

    They are:
    *NBN 40/100
    *$75 Per Month
    *500GB Per month
*Month - Month plan - No exit Fee.
    * No setup fee (may be because everything was ready to go)
    *already had Modem router

Will report back in a week or 2 if any improvements

  • +1

Clubtelco $40 unlimited, byo modem ,no contract. Highly recommended, never any problems. FTTP ready waiting for a deal.

    • @nocure hows the speed?

      • +1

        20mbps

    • +1

Was on this before I switched to Telstra. CT gave faster and more consistent speeds.

    • +1

      excludes land line ?

      add another $30 ? so total = $70 p/m ?

  • +1

Just checked reviews for Clubtelco, not good.
I am with iiNet but looking at changing as they moved me off my old plan.
Despite numerous phone calls and promises to sort - did not happen. They make promises but do not keep.
I agree with Islund, iiNet shit customer service.

    • +4

It's pretty rare to find any positive reviews for any ISP. Usually if everythings working, people don't have a reason to review.

  • TPG naked ADSL2+ unlimited for $70, but planning on moving to Optus to take advantage of this deal.
Works to be $60 a month over the 2 years and hopefully better speeds

TPG have been pretty decent as far as things go, but I don't like all their 'gotcha' charges when you try and leave

  • +1

Telstra Medium Bundle $89 minus $10 bundle discount = $79/month
    400GB, Super fast NBN (100/40).

    • +1

I'm on the same $79 deal with all local and national calls free.

  • $40 ADSL including line rental with 50gb+50gb with Exetel. Have gone over that some months but have not been charged any extra. Speed is fine for video streaming.

  • +1

Telstra Cable. Getting a pretty decent 115/3mbps.

Remember with telstra you can haggle. We have a $20 credit applied to our account every month. Would highly recommend telstra cable if you can get it, service and customer support has been pretty good when we needed a technician out.

Was with iinet for 10 years before that (all while we had the cable connection just sitting there not being used :| ). When we ended up leaving we closed our account, ported the number across and then happened to go overseas for a month. Apparently we had a $20 charge outstanding and they started texting the account holder, then literally any number that had ever been associated with the account. We tried calling but got put in a queue (and being overseas the roaming charges hurt) so we decided to wait a few weeks till we got home. Got home to calls and letters from debt collectors…..over $20….. for customers of 10 years who had never once been a day late with any bill.

  • 500gb unlimited land-line calls, cable (speed about 15mbps) telstra @$80. Pretty good especially compared to adsl. We use about 400gb and fairly happy as we can watch all the internet tv (including netflix) foreigner tv (Italian and British) voip calls, youtube as much as we like (2 adult a 14yo and 10yo)

  • +1

Well First of all you have to check what's available at your home. DSL, cable or nbn?

  • TPG Unlimited ADSL2+ including home line w/ unlimited local and national calls + free international calls for $69.99 I think (I don't pay the bills).
    700m from the exchange.
    15/0.8 is my speed.

Waiting for NBN in my area…

    • +2

At 700m your line can and should do much better. I'm getting the same rate at 1.8km cable length.

  • I have Optus cable 100/5mb. I do get 100 every now and then and do get conjestion at peak time. But. I still beat adsl speeds
    Wouldn't move

    • What speed do you get up? The max upload on optus cable is around 2mb/s

  • +2

    TPG / ADSL2 / UNLIMITED / $60/MO
TPG have always been great. Only issues have ever been with Telstra's infrastructure. On ADSL2 only because NBN is not and will not be available in my area for a thousand years.

  • Dodo Unlimited ADSL2+ $34.90 per month (just gone up from $29.90). About 10mbps download speed. NBN no where in sight. Only contacted their support once at setup and they were extremely helpful.

    • Im with dodo. i pay 74 a month for the same deal. why is the cost so different?

they are sh*t i wont recommend them to anyone if you have an alternative. First few months I used to get 16mb download speed now for the past 5 months only 6mb and below :/

      • Price changes with month-to-month (no-contract), 12 month or 24 months contracts.

  • Most reviews on Telcos are negative, because of the fact that it is a mostly complicated technology that the average joe finds difficult to negotiate. I think that you would be wise not to take your advice this way. However the general advise given in this forum is solid and focuses on the results or outcomes, which is a much better view. There are nearly always issues setting up the internet, it is just a matter of getting through these. I am with Exetel first wth Adsl+, and now NBN. All good.

    • +1

Most reviews on Telcos are negative, because of the fact that they are deceptive asshats who make the products & services so convoluted that the average joe finds them difficult to negotiate.

      Fixed.

      • +3

Agreed. Telcos don't know themselves how their technology works!

        • Oh yeah, +1 to that.
