A $600 jacket should include solar powered (in the exterior material) internal heating and cooling…
40% off Kathmandu prices is basically what the RRP should be
More like 50%+. Kathmandu is running the Rivers model of year-long 'sales' which is their new normal. Their staff discount is in the order of 70-80% off.
40% discount applies to full-priced Kathmandu-branded gear only
OP, please update your title/description.
Maybe I am from another planet, but the item prices of this Kathmandu business seem too high to me. Do OzBargainers really buy stuff from it, and do those outdoor activities with them?
Waaaayyyy too high. I bought one item from clearance, once. Also, this sale strategy of having a "sale" every second day of the week is ridiculous. But I guess some suckers still buy it, apparently they're making a profit.
That's what I thought too. Couple of times when their deals were posted here I thought to check their stuff, and had to quickly close the window. Their products suggest they were made in China, so why don't I just buy similar stuff from AliExpress with a fraction of the price instead?
i have a couple of items from them,
pretty darn warm vest and jacket,
if you can get it cheapI got one of those microfibre towels last year for $10 at DFO, now "reduced to $47", utterly ridiculous..
Damn! I had a feeling something was off with their prices. Well, I ain't in rush to buy from them any time soon.
Haven't bought anything from Kathmandu since I discovered how over-priced they are compared to overseas. And that's at sale price. If you paid RRP at Kathmandu you're insane. For outerwear I use US shops like sierra trading post, landsend etc. Outdoorsports.co.nz in NZ is awesome too if you like Icebreaker merino
Absolutely agree
Kathmandu has always used this model, their normal prices are stupid and their sale prices are just about normal. Its a huge joke of a company lol
No they haven't, the quality used to be better before the original founder Jan Cameron sold it off. They also did not have the ridiculous pricing all the time.
You should see the staff discount. I picked up a $100 shirt the other day $20, $199 backpack for $32 and $49 hiking socks for $13.
Do you work there? Or have a mate who can help you out?
Very reasonable prices…..at staff discount.
Now and then you find some gems, but… yeah… they're strongly responsible for 'sale' exhaustion…
The only major legit sale they had was two years ago, in winter, when it wasn't getting cold.
ie
They had 2 Albury softshell jackets for $80… retail $220Seen them on sale this year for $150…
good standard softshell jackets
Lucky you! That was a real bargain. I can respect sales like those, but what they're showing as on sale these days are insane. A good example in the 1st comment posted here in this deal.
Sales are only legit when they're desperate or fked up…
Like Masters… everyone is rubbing their hands for the real Masters sale
They jacked up the original price to 40% then do a 40% sale. great savings!
$10 + 40% = $14
$14 - 40% = $8.4
$8.4 < $10 so yes it is
Isn't it 40% off all year round? lol
I consider 40% off at Kathmandu still to be overpriced. 50% off = the real RRP. 60% = 10% off.
Most outdoor enthusiasts consider Kathmandu a bit of joke.North Face is better?
North Face is waaaayyyyy better…..
Always wonder how Kathmandu can still survive and stay in business…amazingNorthface, Patagonia, Mountain Hardware, Marmot, Arc'teryx… I could go on.
I think you mean Mountain Designs ?
@Marcsie: Mountain Designs is just an average quality Australian brand rapidly heading the way of Kathmandu (aka the OEM quality trap).
Mountain Hardware and Mountain Equipment are well regarded international brands with a legacy in mountaineering and climbing.
@O O: haha sorry :p
@raven2000: Dead bird is nice. I saw it at paddy pallin, and far too expensive in Australia.
Northface sleeping bag liner at Kahtmandu was like $160 when I went in to get one about 2 months ago… Once I saw that price tag I went to Nepal without one and when I was there I purchased a Northface one for the equivalent of $10 Aus… not saying that it is the real deal Northface.. but it has the brand name written on it. And its just a sleeping bag liner.
I wanted to buy some packing cubes for an international trip I was doing and Kathmandu was the closest store. They were listed as $40 each RRP. They were on sale though, $35 for 3.
Who on earth would pay $40 each for these things.
Yeah I don't know who would.
I usually get mine from IKEA, not the most durable but survived a few solid months backpacking
Ikea are cheaper and better. Good choice.
Hot tip: you can get them from daiso
Basically it's the same sale as last week's members only sale. Now open to everyone and on their eBay store as well.. Combine with the Groupon voucher for a further discount on eBay.
Pumpkin Patch threw it in a few weeks ago. Same people own Kathmandu, Kathmandu to follow. Decent gear at both places, but way overpriced. I only buy when massively reduced/clearance. Wish they could keep their prices low, that way they may actually survive.
Good old registered ripoff prices here
Much cheaper to buy clothes from UK stores like ASOS and SportsDirect these days due to the cheaper exchange rates. Australian stores are just too expensive.
Australian stores are just too expensive.
Yeah, but Australian stores employ Australians, if that matters.
They won't be employing Australians for much longer if they're going to continue being expensive. Companies have been moving jobs overseas for decades and it will continue because everything here is so damn expensive. Unfortunately for everyone here, that's just the reality of the global economy.
moving jobs overseas for decades and it will continue because everything here is so damn expensive.
You're implying that you're paid too much and that's why you deserve to be replaced by overseas worker? You're probably right.
On the other hand, once your neighbor is unemployed and in desperation robs you in middle of the night, perhaps, you'll think that money you saved by buying direct from overseas wasn't as great at it seemed at the time.
As to global economy - that all works if things aren't skewed. If postage from China isn't cheaper than from Australia, if workers have same rights, if children go to high school, if dumping toxic residues and byproducts into rivers have same consequences, if government subsidies are same (Table 1), if GST is applied on direct import purchases, etc.
I'm guessing you'll be supporting Australian jobs by buying from Australian stores, buying products made in Australia and you don't mind paying full retail price (even if you believe it's a rip off) because you can keep your neighbours employed. Wow, that is great mate. I'm happy for you.
Yes, but I'd also like to ensure that my money goes to support like-minded Australians and their employers. So, specifically, I'd like to identify and avoid doing business with you and your employer if you don't feel any obligation to support your Australian neighbour and their employer. That'd be fair, right, mate?
Hopefully with the arrival of Decathlon, Kathmandu will review their prices…
Can't wait for decathlon to come here…..
Prices didn't change much after Chloe Esposito won pentathlon gold?
Kathmandu is a Persian rug gallery. 40% off = the roof price, 50%+ is a genuine discount.
That said their stuff seems pretty decent from what I've seen. Are you telling me those pieces of carpet aren't actually worth $2000?
cant get any more Persian than a rug made in China :)
Lol, I've had a running joke with my wife since we moved to this side of the world (including NZ) where every time we go past a Kathmandu one of us says "oh look Kathmandu have a sale on". At a bare minimum they have 40% off at least 300 days year. They are a rip off merchant. Macpac are much better.
I buy macpac…
I think they're own by the same company… they have very very similar products…
Macpac feels like the premium versions with ltd range… Kathmandu B grade similar items with bigger range
Kathmandu is well over priced to begin with. Only schmucks buy at Kathmandu retail pricing!
I went to buy some thermal Tops and bottoms but they were about $140 odd each at Kathmandu. Ended up scoring some from somewhere else ( I think Kmart, can't remember ) for about $15 each
Kmart all day!
Offer ends Sunday 6 November 2016. Excludes clearance, seconds, gift cards, e-gift cards and Summit Club memberships. While stocks last. Not all items available in all stores or to buy online.
Nope ! Macpac is still better !
Pretty sure they're one and the same company now.
Doesn't matter. I don't pay the Kathmandu price at macpac.
Nope, at some point the founder of Katmandu Jan Cameron had a large share in MacPac but this was well after she already sold off her stake in Katmandu.
And more recently another group bought 90% of MacPac which would have made whatever loose link between Katmandu-Jan-MacPac pretty much irrelevant.
Jacked up 200% before discount. Laziest marketing trick in the book. Poor effort Kathmandu marketing/sales team.
That would be illegal…. no they're permanently high so they can have sales all year round
Unfortunately, this is true. Just wait a couple weeks and you'll find what you want at a reasonable price. Helps when you stack codes, ie $10 off $100 spend.
Your telling me marking up the price from Manufacturer/Factory to Retail Department Store is illegal? Is profit making illegal?
Misleading the consumer is illegal but jacking up prices and offering ridiculous discounts on jacked up prices are definitely not.
Its illegal to jack up the price before a discount.
That's why you rarely see it happen.
People jump up and down when they do it.
Stores get around it by skirting that regulation.
Kathmandu, does it the laziest way, RRP super high which it reverts to now and then… the rest of the time sale sale sale
@Baghern: I was referring to the mark up - but yes I agree and know what you are stating. My bad for not making it clearer.
It's probably a good business model. A lot of idiots out there…
For any students out there, Summit Club membership is free. Just walk in store and flash your student ID.
I was hoping to grab a couple of those microfibre quick drying towels for cheap but the 40% price is the exact same price as the regular Summit Club members price… $36 a pop doesn't really seem worth it.
If anyone can suggest an alternative Microfibre quick drying towel, i'm open to suggestions :)
Cheers.
You done gone opened up my nerd box.
Microfibre towels 101: Large towel sizes listed
Price (low-to-high):
Denali Microfibre towel - Anaconda brand - $12.99 - can be had cheap on sale360 Degrees Microfibre towel - $13.90 with free postage - Snowys or alternative source - $11.95
Packtowl Original Size L - $17.88 - the original lightweight travel towel!!
Sea to Summit Tek Towels - Comfort/Weight balanced towel - $29 or if you want to wait a few days for 20% off - $27.96
Comfort (low-to-high):
Packtowl Original Size L - $17.88 - the original lightweight travel towel!!
Denali Microfibre towel - Anaconda brand - $12.99 - can be had cheap on sale
360 Degrees Microfibre towel - $13.90 with free postage - Snowys or alternative source - $11.95
Sea to Summit Tek Towels - Comfort/Weight balanced towel - $29 or if you want to wait a few days for 20% off - $27.96
My favourite (least-to-most):
Denali - hate supporting weird OEM cheapo brands, but if you need something cheap and simple it works.
360 Degrees - Actually quite comfortable, might even be the QC failures of Sea to Summit since they own 360 Degrees now.
Packtowl Original - Probably the original travel towel, light and dries very quickly, feels like weird soft cardboard or felt, can't be bought locally without getting screwed.
Sea to Summit Tek Towel - Too expensive generally, better than the lighter weight versions which don't absorb water well at all and feel like weird silk towels. Close to a normal towel feel (and my gym towels nowadays).
Packtowl Ultralite - Didn't bother listing this one because it is niche as they come. The lighter version of the original, feels like crap, looks like crap, still absorbs water very well, dries very quickly, and weights damn near nothing. Hiker's dream towel. Don't even bother with local shops, absolute disgusting rip-offs for a 96g piece of fabric.
Great info and review!!!
Fken awesome, been tryign to catch them on discount
Champion, thanks so much mate.
I only shop at Kathmandu if they are 90% off which never they will :)
The problem with kathmandu is 90% of their stuff is in house, their rrp is bull sh#t.
40% really isnt good. They run the home brand with BS 300% RRP business model.
Companies like Katmandu and Anaconda etc RRP is a pretty much ripoff. Anybody thinks 40% is good value have a either too much money on their hands or utter ignorance.
You can get some good American brands from Anaconda at good prices on sale. So I wouldn't lump them in with Kathmandu imo.
This is a FLASH MY EYES SALE.
Ppl walk and say, "I'm looking for a backpack, pants for my upcoming trip to Europe". Those are the one's that are happy to put up with rrp.
Afterall, options are you go top shelf and pay even more (but better quality), or 'lesser' known brands and perhaps, only perhaps, compromise on quality a little. With a 40% sale like this, it'll rope in more of such.
Also not sure if it's widely known that Kmd's stuff is average compared to the proper travel/outdoor brands given the difference in advertising locally.
I swear the fake north face I bought in Sapa, Vietnam is better and cost $15 for a goretex jacket, $10 for waterproof pants…
Not surprised there :)
Could have been seconds rather than fake though, given many brands seem to
manufacture out of se asia these days.
"Women's down jacket now $360 was $600"
Man. That's a good discount but that jacket better have some funky extras
