  • why would someone say $588 for overseas xiaomi phone when they can get local stock Sony Xperia Z5 for $560 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/273816

    • +5

Because people buy based on their preferences? Also this one kicks Sony's butt out of the oblivion in terms of specs. More value for money

      • the funniest part is both of them use sony imx sensors and both of them totally fail at the software side of this to utilise it (even though sony makes the damn things)

    • +2

This phone is better (IMHO) than the Sony Z5 Premium that they sell for $699.

XiaoMi gives the best bang for buck these days :)

    • I can't understand either why anyone would risk buying this phone, specs aren't everything. Its a beast of a phone but too much of a risk for me to spend on something that basically has no warranty, when issues come up.

      Going by past experience

      • To some people what you're getting is worth the risk. I don't think Sony makes good phones.

        • -6

I don't think xiaomi make good phones either (I'm sure I'm not the only one, seen other complaints on the phone), I've had a note 3 in the past it was the worst phone I've ever owned, I ended up smashing it.

Yes I did flash the ROM, and yes, it still was a pos.

I was spewing I spent $250, good luck on spending double and it doesn't work out.

I guess your rich since its worth you taking the risk. Just my 2 cents

        • @bti_jet:

          You're rich!! You smashed a $250 phone.

        • -4

          @HandsomeMonkey:

Didn't say I'm rich, smashed it cause I had too many problems with it and neverbuying were ignoring my emails.

        • +1

@bti_jet: Or, you know, you could have on sold it through gumtree and put that cash towards some anger management therapy.

And for the record, how did "neverbuying" react to you smashing the phone?

        • +1

          @bti_jet:

My point is you're calling people rich because they took the risk to buy overseas products but you smashed a phone because there are problems. I think you're richer than them.

I have the same phone and no probs with it. But even if I did, $250 was an acceptable risk.

I guess your rich since its worth you taking the risk. Just my 2 cents

I'm not getting this phone. I'm only saying that between this and a 1 year old SD810 phone (the SoC itself was used in early 2015 phones) for the same price, I'd take this. SD810 was a misstep from Qualcomm. Samsung who normally uses SD chips passed on it that year.

If you presented a better alternative at this price point, you'd have a good point. A local stock 820/821 phone for this price? Absolutely take that over this.

    • +2

That phone is a year old and uses the overheating/throttling SD810.

This has double the RAM and 4X the internal storage for $28 extra, not to mention a far superior SoC. The latest Snapdragon available.

    • This is a flagship phone - not some budget lower end like some other Xiaomis.
I'd say it's better compared to Sony Xperia XZ, lacking water resistance though making up for it with more RAM, storage and ever so slightly better CPU.

    • +1

I'd stay away from any phones with the SD810 SOC. The 810 design was done by the work experience kids. That is not a recommendation for the Mi5s per se.

Spec wise it's comparable to Googles overpriced Pixel XL.

      • +1

Sorry about that, had to do my computer engineering apprenticeship somewhere…

Edit: spec wise it basically is a Pixel, extremely similar phones.

      • is it possible to install the Pixel's ROM onto the Mi5s Plus?

  • do u really need 6GB ram?

    • No, but it's nice to have.

    • Not at all, though Android will still utilize it for caching and what-not. Negligible real-world difference, but neat to have.

  • How's the software?

    • I quite like my Xiaomi Mi 5 (which is very similar to this phone), and would recommend it. However, it does have some stability problems in terms of speed — occasionally it will slow down. This could be because the ROM is not the official one, but a reseller's version. However, I have not tested flashing it to a different ROM.

I think it is quite decent value, and is usually quite fast and responsive.

Apparently it is quite easy to flash, and Xiaomi upload official stable and development ROMs to their website. They also include an updater on the device.

  • How is the reliabilty of Xiaomi phones?
I remember reading about some people said it easily gets broken or something like that

    • +1

Never had a problem here, onto my 3rd now. Had 2 Redmi Note 3, and a Mi5. I always keep a glass screen protector and a small case on though, something that gives more grip than the phone itself.

Biggest risk to a Xiaomi phone? My wife. She loves losing and dropping stuff. Thankfully it's only damaged the glass protector, so that's easy to replace. Last time the whole phone vanished!

  • +1

Camera quality? Especially in low light?

  • Is the lack of Band 28 support going to be a problem?
