    Great phone too!

  • Powerful SD400, most watches pack this kind of power!

    • Be fair, most smartwatches as far as I know reduce the clock and use only one core or two cores.

Eh, MS has been using little bit outdated chips for their phone for awhile on their non-flagship phones. Though, they do perform surprisingly well for their spec most of the times.

Ace little phone that works fine if you're with Virgin.

    • -3

Which part ? the vibration bit ?

    • Be with someone and Virgin???

  • +6

Just nice. Looking for 1 now. I had one before, and I can confirm free unlock from Optus.

  • +3

    Great phone for oldies

    • +3

Depends, the best phone for oldies is sometimes a basic phone with physical buttons. Both my mum and wife's nan both had problems with touchscreens not registering their touches very well, turns out it's due to lack of moisture at the fingertip as the skin ages.

      • -6

they can use their nose to touch

        • +1

seems a divisive comment…. but I'll upvote for a laugh.

        • @Gravy:

          lol

      • +3

Interesting…i was thinking the solution…some phones, like my old Note 4 ,you can choose a feature named like 'enhanced touch screen sensibility to use with gloves'..maybe that is gonna fix it.

        • Yeah true, good advice. Both phones my mum and nan-inlaw had were fairly low end and wouldn't have had that feature (capacitive screens still though).

  • +3

It can be upgraded to Windows 10

  • +7

It's been at this price at Kmart for a while now. Around $20 to unlock from third party if unlocking works as these are meant to be difficult to. This phone went down to $49/59 when Target cleared their stocks.

Even considering my name, I like Windows Phone. It feels smooth even on shit-tier hardware that Android would bog down. But argh.. the lack of apps hits me where it hurts. Edge is one of the worse mobile browsers I've used, but keeping in mind I was on a SD200 + 512MB RAM. It's really nice - feels like a nice fusion of the iOS and Android with touches of Windows 10 here and there. It feels slick. Why did they cancel the Android compatibility layer, dammit!

Hasn't it been this price for ages https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/259286

Been cheaper than this before too https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/246747

    • +4

I paid 66.5$ Officeworks Pricebeat. That's the best bargain I've ever done so far lol. Great phone!

I love these phones for a whole bunch of reasons, but IMO Here Drive is the best phone based navigation I've seen, primarily because it allows you to download the entire Australian map onto your phone, so you can navigate in your car without mobile data turned on. I use this phone in my car for just that, as well as Spotify.

    • +1

Is this still the case now that Windows no longer owns Here?

I heard you can't download maps anymore on WinMob.

      • +6

I updated to Windows Phone 10 OS and yes, Here Drive is gone, but you can still use Windows Maps offline, which I find as good if not better than Here Drive.

        • Does it speak to you whilst driving?

        • @wolfenator87:

In so much as it tells you turn left, right etc etc, yes.

        • @wolfenator87:

Also, my 640 came with Windows Phone 8. I assume these do too. So if you really want Here Drive, just don't update it to WP10 🙂

        • @wolfenator87:
Sure, just told me today while driving that wolfenator87 needs to buy one. 🙂

        • @GregRust: MS Maps/W10 use the HERE core, IMHO works much better than HERE/8.1. Really good on the 930, still works fine on the 640XL

        • +1

@harkoliar: I have 2 x Windows Phones running 8.0 and 8.1, both with downloaded OZ maps, so I'm all well catered for HERE DRIVE, until they eventually cark it.
Get a good universal mount and a in-car USB charger and you're all set.
On long drives, I like to randomise play my 32gb SD card full of mp3s and the navigator voice-over is not intrusive because it will fade or pause the music momentarily while speaking directions.
Just make sure you don't accidentally leave your phone in the car because the heat will kill it.

        • +1

@harkoliar: Mate. I have about 4 phones already :P Still won't ever buy a POS iphone though.

    • +1

I use a similar app on iOS called Navigon Australia & HERE maps - both can download maps offline + voice guidance which is a plus. However, Navigon does cost money but is well worth it!

Got one for my father from OW for $65 when it was on Target clearance for $69.

Great phone indeed and even for $99 it is a bargain.

    • +2

Also I got it unlocked for free via online chat as I have been Optus customer for almost a year now.

      • What do I tell them if I want it activated for free? I haven't activated the Optus sim card, but I have been with Optus for 20 years.

  • +7

open the case - removable battery - add a 64Gb microSD - basically this phone punches well above it's weight - fast and a big bright screen - 1/10th of the price of iPhone 7 / Samsung S7 - no apps so what just use Edge Browser - go to mobile site - pin the URL to your start screen

  • +5

Great little phone indeed, had one for sometime and for the price, it's a beautiful OS and great value.
I have a 64GB U series micro SD card in mine for plenty of storage for music and videos.
Not as fast at the Lumia 950XL obviously, but still a great device.
Has all the apps I need, email, twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, menulog, Commonwealth Bank, messenger and even boost juice (yes I use it a lot).

  • Stupid question: I already have an Optus pre-paid SIM card in my current phone. Would I be able to put that SIM into this phone and have it work without any unlock shenanigans?

    • +3

      Yes of course!

    • +2

Also can verify this. Although I had a post-paid sim, I bought a prepaid 640 when my iPhone battery died and it worked straight away.

    • +1

Just as a follow up, the Lumia 640 takes a micro-sim. So if your current phone has a nano sim you'll need an adapter to accommodate it.

      • Or buy a $2 sim and port the number across.
Sometimes that messes up and gets delayed though.

    • Excellent, many thanks for the replies!

  • wife has one, and it fcks up on alot of webpages whilst browsing, where my cheap android phone has no issue. Camera is very good though

    • is it running Windows Phone 8.1 or Windows Mobile 10? if 8.1 recommend update.

      • It can be upgraded to Windows 10 if you get a Windows 8.1 version out of box.

    • I'm still running 8.0 and it does have trouble rendering certain webpages. I just use another browser or my laptop.

  • Extra $3 for click and collect or $10 for postage.

  • I'm considering this deal, but I sure would rather get it for even cheaper like some of those $69 previous deals mentioned. Do you think it will drop even lower before Christmas? I'm not in a hurry. Also, I looked at the XL model, how cheap does it normally get on a deal?

    • What I really should be asking is, is this the best Lumia camera I can expect to get (on sale) for under $100 before Christmas? Note, camera quality is a key feature for me rather than phone speed or size.

      • MS has been rumoured to kill off Lumia branding for something else (rumours of Surface Phone, which didn't get announced with Surface Book and Studio like some people were speculating). That said, that rumour was also saying that MS will end sales of Lumia Phones by December. So perhaps look into that? Though I kinda get the feeling that it'd be hard to predict whether they'd sell out before December, so there is always that.

I think the price range that Lumia phones are at is already fairly low.

        http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/138792-microsoft-to-kill-lum…

    • They are on runout clearance since MS pulled the plug on Lumina branding.
So while there is a chance the last stock will go at great discounts, there is also a high chance that there will all be gone at any time.

  • Do Lumias have the best cameras for under $100?

    • The camera is very good

  • FYI, Target has this 640 phone listed at $49 (not available online), but I just tried calling their customer service, and they don't have any left in any stores. They must have had a final clearance at that price. That's cheap!

Personally I couldn't recommend a windows phone on this level hardware, even at this price. w10m just runs like crap in my experience on this hardware, maybe it'll improve over time with future updates (Microsoft are trying) but for now its best not to count on it. Even comparing against something like my old Telstra boost, the performance is dreadful. What I can't get over is how slow apps can take to launch on w10m, around 30 seconds just to launch an app like Facebook. Facebook has decided to give up on this hardware now, and limit their app to only 2gb or better windows phones. Though Facebook app still works on this hardware for now. Same with messenger, just really god damn sluggish on this hardware. This phone was awesome on 8.1, ran smooth and battery life was awesome. Even doing something like switching between apps is now slow, I thought it was my phone but then I checked YouTube videos demonstrating the performance and saw the same things. And don't mention resuming screens, you get to enjoy that most the time on w10m on this type of hardware. I suppose 1gb of ram like on Android phones, just isn't enough to have smooth performance and the os need to reload things. Maybe my expectations are too high, but when a game like Lara Croft Relic Run takes around 25 seconds longer to load up on my Lumia 640 vs my cheaper lower end Telstra buzz, then I don't feel I'm being too critical of it's performance. At the end of the day your mileage may vary, and it depends on what apps you use and how you use your phone. Your experience might be much different to mine, especially if you just stick with Microsoft applications and don't expect too much out of the hardware. The worse thing Microsoft did though was ruining the keyboard experience, it was so smooth and accurate on 8.1. Best phone keyboard by far, but now I prefer googles keyboard. My advice to anyone who gets this phone, to just stick with 8.1. Though the app situation is getting dire on that store, and support is pretty much out the window, at least the phone will perform excellent. And I think someone just looking at phones in this price point, probably are happy to make that compromise.

Your not going to find a phone at this price point with as good a camera, the battery life is more than adequate and the screen is very good for a $99 phone.

    • +1

If I get it (I'm going to wait and try and find it for less than $99 though, hoping someone else has a clearance before Christmas), I'm going to be keeping it on Win8.1 mobile. I have that right now, and I like it. Thanks for the warning about Win10 mobile. I don't use my phone for a whole lot of apps.

      • My guess it'll probably be very difficult to find one at that point. I know when I picked up mine 6 or so months back it was hard to find then. I guess it depends where you live, and whether all the stock had cleared by that point. Maybe the 650 will be reduced significantly sometime between now and xmas. The 650 is marginally a better phone, just the difference in price has never justified the small improvements.

  • Out of stock in Brunswick (Barkly square)

  • Guys i picked one of these up today.

How do I go about getting a free unlock?

    • +1

      Sent you a PM

      • +1

Thanks to Koalafied I got my 640 unlocked via Optus chat.

        Very happy with the phone.

Also easy free upgrade to Windows 10 was nice.

      • Hi koalafied,

I got this phone too. Wonder how I would be able to unlock it. I have Amaysim card.

        Thanks.

        • I will send you a PM now buddy

        • @koalafied: Thanks. I've just update my settings to allow PM.

  • Hey guys I am having a problem with my handset. Specifically it loses connection to the Optus network at least once every 30 seconds.

I noticed that at least once every 30 seconds my phone was losing connection to the Optus network - it would go from 5 bars reception to no service, then back to 5 bars after 1 or 2 seconds.

I took the phone to the Optus shop (it's a prepaid Optus handset).

They swapped the SIM for another one. It made no difference.

I swapped the handset for another one, it made no difference.

I read on some forums that instead of allowing automatic network selection, the problem would be solved if I manually selected the Optus network. I tried that too, it made no difference.

What does work is changing the maximum connection speed down from 4g to 3g. As soon as I do that, the disconnects stop.

It's definitely a hardware or software bug and its frustrating. I have purchased a 4g phone, but it only works correctly in 3g…

I tried 3 brand new handsets and all 3 have the same identical issue.

I have run all the updates for the phone, and have upgraded to Windows 10. None of that solved the problem.

Only setting the phone to 3g maximum connection works.

    Any thoughts ?

PS: I would say that for $99 AUD you get a lot of phone for your money. Pity its only working in 3g though…

    • Yes return it buy a real phone 10 suks

      • LOL like an exploding Samsung?

The issue turned out to be that I had data switched off on my Optus SIM. With data switched off at the SIM level, it couldn't maintain a 4g connection even for calls.

As soon as data was enabled on the SIM (on Optus servers) it worked perfectly. Phone was not faulty, just required data to be on at the SIM level (even if still off at the phone).
