      wah-way

      • +3

        Thanks a lot!

      • Bless you.

        • can anyone confirm the expiry date on the sim and it is full band support especially can use on telstra?

          SUre it's unlocked.

        • +2

          @jjj123:

The ones I bought from previous deals are indeed unlocked and I have used them with Telstra.

I haven't done any kind of formal testing to verify Optus hasn't locked out frequencies. But speeds are good on Telstra when I've used it. Battery life is below average.

This page lists frequencies and indicates different variants support different ones.

I always hear people call it "Hoo-AH-way".
Not saying its right, buy that's what most people seem to use.

      • ah interesting, thanks!

      • +6

        This one is closer.

It actually sounds exactly like how it is spelt.

Hua - sounds like hwa, as in wa but starting with the h sound.

        Wei sounds exactly like way

      • +2

        we just say How-way

    • +3

      Ha-waii

    • +9

      In Chinese - 華为

      Cantonese pronunciation is Wah-Wai
      Mandarin pronunciation is Hwa-Way

First Character literally means China/Chinese and 2nd one means success.

      • +1

That interesting, so obviously Chinese people pronounce it quite differently too depending on the dialect and region.

        • +2

Cantonese is not a dialect it's a different language, sounds very different to Mandarin. They both use the same writing characters.

        • +2

          @teekoo:
OK, I knew it sounded different but used the same characters but I didn't realise it is considered a separate language.
          Cheers.

        • +3

@King Tightarse: I wouldn't call it a different language all together but it's definitely a major fork from Mandarin hundreds of years ago. It's hard to find an analogy but my take is that they are sort of like Spanish Spanish and Latino Spanish?

        • +1

          @MadMaxBargainRoad:
So what is the correct term to differentiate between Cantonese and Mandarin? Not a dialect nor a completely separate language so..?

        • +1

@King Tightarse: lol no idea at all. It's like all the different flavours of Android.

        • @teekoo:
Nope, Cantonese is not a different language, given over 95 precent of written words are identical and use exactly the same way, it is the same language. Just the dialect especially how to pronounce words is very different.
Mandarin is the offical dialect because it was once used by the qing (last) dynasty as offical speaking tune, the Man part was what the original people of qing ruling class was named.
There are many many dialects in china, Cantonese speaking area alone has dozens as far as I know.
How Chinese culture should be defined is how they can understand the written and speaking language, hence people off Chinese descent in Malaysia Singapore region who can read and write Chinese often consider they are part of the greater culture. Those who can't understand the written and speaking of the language are the ones feeling less belong to the culture.

As for the name of the brand:
HWa way would be closer to the proper mandarin pronunciation.

      Who wah way

      Who are we?

    • They really should have changed their name to a more English sounding name to not alienate people from buying their products.

    noice deal

    4gb for $24 is good.

    • +2

Remember you'll only have 14 days to use the data.
Agreed, the 4g model for that price is pretty good.

      • Yeah, I was going to buy until I realized only 14 days to use the data.

      • If you don't care about the device ( I love it as it's unlocked and covers most bands for all Aussy Carriers ), and want 4GB of data cheaper, Kmart has the 4G usb stick with same starter sim and included 4GB/14 day data for $15.

    • Has been cheaper.

    • +2

      4gb for $24 is good.

Not in most people's reality LOL

    • Might go nicely with optus' double data promo right now: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/273438

    • +1

currently you will get double bonus data as of this morning i.e 8gb

      • How you guys got 4GB data ?! I did activate but got nothing . Pls help

        • does your modem comes with sim card?

if yes, please activate it and once it activated start using it. the sim is preloaded with data.

  • is this locked to Optus?

    • +3

Can confirm it's unlocked. I put Telstra sim in and it works. The device can also be used as a range extender.

      • wifi extender? :O

        • +1

          Yes, you are right.

      • When didn't you buy it? All the officeworks I went to say they are locked

        • Bought when Coles has it on special

      • wifi extender? how to?

    • I guess NOT.

    • +1

Had a E5377 from Optus. Tried Voda sim on it. No problem.

  • Anyone has idea about the expiry date, for the SIM containing 4GB DATA ?

    • +1

Mine had a September 2018 expiry.

  • Price beat at officeworks?

  • Just paid $29 at officeworks…. I lost $5.. lol

and saved my sanity shopping in BigW.

    • Could have priced match.

  • Has anyone bought it from OfficeWorks in the last 2-3 days and confirmed that it is unlocked? I have called two OfficeWorks today and both places says it is locked to the Optus network.

Or has anyone bought it from BigW last few days and confirmed it is unlocked? Just needing to know as I am going overseas and want to bring it along to use.

    • One of the OfficeWorks guy said that previous stock 6 months ago was unlocked but he says current stock is locked.

    • has tried the bigw one on Vodafone , no problem, its unlocked, although staff said its locked.

  • This is a good fast Wifi MBB Modem. I can recommend it for speeds and for being unlocked. Please note that with a Vodafone sim the APN may need a manual change which is easy to do via the software which can be accessed at this url: 192.168.8.1/html/home.html

  • So after the credit/data finished/expired, we just top up? Or find one of those half price sims and use it as data only?

    • +1

      Whatever you prefer.

OVO.com.au is probably still the best deal on data only.

  • +1

Does it support a mobile sim? Would go nicely with the pre-paid 12GB kogan mobile sim for $4.95.

    • Shouldnt be an issue, just ned to change the APN

  • It is $24.50 now and tomorrow will be 50cents cheaper?

    https://www.bigw.com.au/product/optus-huawei-4g-wifi-modem-e…

Edit, looks like this price is for online only, will add $9.90 delivery charge.

  • +1

I got it today for $24.50 just in case it runs out tomorrow.

    • whats the expiry date on the sim?

      • +1

        September 2018

  • +1

Got the last one at Big W QV for $24! http://imgur.com/a/IfCK5

Btw sim expires on 1 Aug 2018

  • +1

Officeworks have reduced their price to $24 now, btw.

Picked up one this afternoon, expiry 1/Sept/2018.

Also, I went to BigW in the Brisbane CBD at lunch intending to get one, but they had sold out, stating someone came in on Monday and purchased every single unit they had for full price ($49)…. bet they feel stupid.

    • +1

Yeah I went to Officeworks to pricematch, and saw they had reduced it (stymieing my plan for getting it for $22.80 after their 5% price beat of Big W). At least in Sydney, the problem with using Officeworks for this modem is a severe lack of stock. There's no stock anywhere in Sydney's CBD or inner west (and the only store that says "limited" rather than "no stock" is Glebe, I visited that store, they system said they have 1 unit, but they looked for me and they don't actually have any stock). Plus it says "unavailable online", so cannot be ordered via the web.
