Sorry, but thats seriously lame. Fine for a couple of AA batteries, or a single li-ion cell, but those powertool batteries can drive thousands of lumens.
I agree . If your that way inclined it's probably ripe for a cree transplant . Actually considering buying the torch just for the battery connector for a portable stereo . 18V is bang on for a chip amp and I already have a couple of batteries with charger .

Perhaps it's lame compared to a searchlight however it's probably all that it can cope with without melting.
It's almost certainly running 1 x 1W LED chips … and over-driving them to buggery anyway.
Unless you can get the heat out, there is no point pushing them any harder.
As for "Cree upgrade" - that is not going to change anything. You need more current, and that means more heat.

If it's just for occasional use these would likely be fine and have a 5yr warranty on skins but much cheaper.
