Do you really need a 'smart' kettle?!

    • +1

      Yes

    • need nope. Want yes. Makes life easier making kids bottles at 3 in the morning.

  • "The water temperature can be remote controlled via your Xiaomi smart home APP, everything in on your hand!"

  • +33

Christ; are you joking? My kettle is $7 from Big W and it has a little switch on the back, when you push it down, it boils. I guess that's too amazingly complicated for anyone to do these days and so it makes more sense to use an app on a phone to control the kettle? What a useless piece of junk.

    I like this feature too:

automatically switches off once water comes to a boil.

Well, that beats me - oh, no, wait, every kettle does that. Wow, a feature of not burning down your house - awesome!

    • +5

Whats the point in having the ability to remotely control your kettle if it can't tell what the water level is? Seems pointless.

Also, ability to control the temp for 12 hours?? - Why would anyone need to have their kettle on for 12 hours straight??

      • +16

        Slow boiled water mmmm drools

        • +3

          Sous Vide water? :O

Incase you have a tea party at your house and people are demanding tea all day!

A bonavita or Brewista kettle are $120 and a worth every cent.

Of this had a gooseneck I would buy in a heartbeat (I've been hoping for one since this came out).

The ability to control water temperatureis crucial for manual coffee brewing methods.

What you don't realise is that your cheapo $7 kettle is probably over boiling the water. Studies have shown that nearly 100% of people with cancer may have drunk water that might have been over boiled.

      • +12

Just as 100% of people with cancer will have inhaled oxygen at some point in their lives. ;-)

      • hmm, is this the same "study" that said drinking hot coffee kills u? I think i saw this one, and i believe it as much as everything else on channel 9.

    • +9

If you're like me and are into tea, the temperature makes a world of difference. Boiling a kettle is great if you have time to monitor the temps to pour over your teas but if you don't then this would be perfect for someone like me.

Same logic/argument with cars, phones, mouse, knives, chairs, audio, food, alcohol etc… Why buy a 20,000 car when a 3,000 car can get you from A to B?

I upvoted your comment, as I agree basically. However, full disclosure is that I own one of those Breville kettles with the buttons to select different temperatures to heat the water to, and I DO sometimes use the different temperatures with different kinds of teas and tisannes. It doesn't make that much of a difference, IMHO, and I probably would have been just as happy with a $30 generic metal kettle as with my fancy metal kettle. (Don't like the plastic ones for more than occasional use… I worry about plastic leaching into boiling water…)

When you're dealing with the more fragile green and white teas temperatures do make a world of difference. Particularly so when you've spent quite a bit for your quality teas and the plays with the temperatures do affect the tasting notes of the tea.

        • Then obviously I have no sense of taste, because I can't differentiate between my nice white tea with pineapple made at the full boil setting and the one made at the 60 or 70 or whatever it is that's labelled white tea, on my kettle. Nice that you can taste the difference, and not all of us can! :-)

I find these types of comments hilarious. It's like when the iphone came out all the luddites said their Nokia can make calls and sms too, why do i need all this new fangled technology.
Constant temperature setting and variable temp control is crucial for different brews of tea and coffee. Enjoy your 7 dollar kettle but there are some good features that are actually useful even if you cant see it.

      • +2

Exactly. It's the experience that it gives you.

A 500 hooker will most likely always be better than a 50 one.

        • Why do I always find these things out AFTER I've already paid :(

  • +1

about 40aud rrp in china. Is it really worth $40 shipment?

    • +12

It's worth $40 for not having to live in China

      • LOL

    • that is a huge profit margin!

Gave you a up vote as I find your comment useful.

    • Goes to show some technology needs to spend more time in R&D. Also that last twitter reply is gold.

I can see this helpful through my daily routine:
    1. Need hot water
    2. Get up to heat water
    3. Sit down
    4. Remember to drink after 20 minutes
    5. Repeat from step 1

I might be interested if it comes with a lifetime international warranty.

  • Anyone know the temperature range of this product? This could potentially be a very cheap sous vide device, just needs a stirrer (or a spoon every.. 10 minutes would work) to ensure the water is well mixed :O

  • "Triple security protection"

How secure is it? Any hardcoded credentials e.g. admin/admin? Hidden backdoors? Does it phone home to a C&C server out there on the internet somewhere? Does it use UPnP?

Is it compatible with Mirai (botnet)?
