  • Interesting. First we have a $299 Lenovo S10e with 6 cell battery

Now we have an $299 EEEPC with 3 cell but with a more updated N450 Pine Trail CPU.

    Which is better?

    • +2

I'd go the EEEPC.. easier to upgrade the battery, rather than the cpu :)

      • How much are you looking at in general for 6 cell batteries. I'm looking at the Dell one from JB, gonna see if I can haggle. So if I can manage to get it down to $370 with an N450 and 6 cell battery i'm happy. What do you think? :)

      • Me too i would go the asus , at least it doesnt have a known overheating issue
        www.s10lenovo.com

        • Yes, I'd avoid the N270 if battery life is important to you. I had one of the Kogan N270's (yes, the one listed here on Ozbargain for $299 last year) the battery life on a 3 cell was only 1.5 hours at best under Win 7.

          • @ash2000: Is it true that the N450 draws less power, therefore a 3 cell battery maybe sufficient?

            • @tomsco: Yep good lucking getting 6.5 hours off a 3 cell battery. I've got a 6 cell and it lasts that long - depends what you want it for. My purpose of getting something underpowered was so that it lasted longer than a powerful machine.

        • The overheating problem was only with the 2009 model S10e.

I have this exact netbook…. seems to be a good machine, nice solid construction, and has a finger print resistant carbon fiber finish. I have the 6 cell version, and it lasts about 6.5 hours on Win7.

A few caveats (and errors in the Reps description)

-Only has 2 USB's (not 3 as above)
-Only has 1 mic/headphone port (not 2 as above)
-Mine only has a B/G wireless card, I'm guessing the "N" spec above is incorrect, as is the reference to bluetooth on the main webpage.
-The sound output via the internal speaker is "mono" (well at least two speakers come from the one hole!)

Also note worthy is that the screen is matte rather than shinny, which I like. The A/C adapter is tiny (smallest on any netbook I've had) which makes it easy to transport.

Overall, a good netbook for sub $300, particularly given the N450 processor.

  • IMHO, Personally I would still go with the lenovo simply because I can buy and install a WWAN card (not sure about Asus, you could still use your USB dongle I suppose) and 3 cell is just not enough to last a day although you can upgrade it easily.

    • lol where you going to put the wwan card there is no space in the s10 ?? actually on some there is space but no where to put the sim card

      • Oh, mine (S10e Gen II ) came with a wwan and simcard slot. I got it from orangeIT but I heard the ones from MNL is the same model.
There is a whirlpool thread about it,

        • So wonder which region yours came from ? do you run temp checking software to see how hot it gets?, i recommend hwmonitor from cpuid etc as they do get hot after 2 + hours

The problem i see is getting it repaired in Aus the service centre more than likely will not replace the same board as its not the designated Aus model, hopefully your board doesnt go on you anytime soon.

Also lenovo australia will give you an extended warranty if you have a few service calls ie after 1-2 they will give you an extra year if you question the reliability

          • @Mikinoz: Thanks for the link Mikinoz. I haven't run temp software but it can get hot on the bottom if you run cpu intensive programs (actually good during the winter lol) but the fan noise doesn't sound too bad to me (maybe the issue was fixed I don't know)

            • @[Deactivated]: Hey Goofy the issue is a hardware problem, the heatsink is not very well put together and tends to use a pad between the cpu and heatsink which does not dissipate heat very well, they actually have a fix for this, ie replace the pad with a coin.

Its only really evident if you use the machine for multimedia ie movie or music

The bios updates have reduced the fan rpm etc which did make it quieter than before.

              • @Mikinoz: Ooooh, hmm I might try to do the mod myself as a pet project when I have time. Thanks again Mikinoz.

  • also, the lenova s10e is going for $289 at mln. (until jul-13).. i think i might get this one… (has 6 cell battery also).

  • how much time realistically would i get on a this? 3 or 4 hours?
and how much and where could i get a 6 cell battery for it?

    • For comparison 9829 have the Asus with 6 cell for $359.10 including postage. I ordered one yesterday. It only has WLAN 802.11b/g though, that is why I'm asking if this one has WLAN 802.11b/g/n.

If it does I might order it for my husband, we can swap batteries between the 2. If this one does not have WLAN 802.11b/g/n, I personally think the 6 cell from 9829 is better value.

  • jasonz1981 can you confirm this has WLAN 802.11b/g/n. Any research I have done on this model is WLAN 802.11b/g - NO N. The "N" spec would sway me whether or not to buy.

"Bargain hunters, You have always wanted a netbook for less than $300, …."

    • lol totally

I want a beautiful bride and a nice house to go with too! :)

  • Looks like they updated the page to the lower specs mentioned earlier in the comments… Its a pity, I would have grabbed one if it actually had wireless N capabilities and an extra USB port.
