An ordinary buyer would be far better with the 32gb for $239. This would still entitle them to a $50 voucher. There is no significant advantage to go for the 64gb for an additional $60 just to get the voucher.

    • added to OP :)

    • They've been as low as $220 too iirc… so you're basically paying $80 for a $100 voucher..

      • +1

can't find any 64gb that has been $220 or did i miss something?

        • +3

Probably was the 32GB. Although I'm not sure what people are doing with any more than 32GB storage on a smart tv?

        • +1

think s/hes referring too the 32gb model.

        • @TheClipIt: I asked for 64gb because he/she mentioned

H.264 Baseline Profile level 3.0 or lower with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

No, it doesn't. I have asked in the previous deals why anyone would choose this over Nvidia shield. Most answers are nonsense like 'it's Apple', 'it's simple to use' or 'I use Plex' etc.

      • +1

How's the Nvidia Shield and how's it priced?

        • -1

$150usd when on special and blow ATV out of the water in terms of performance.

        • @MadMaxBargainRoad: If you can show me something as good as or better than InFuse I'll buy a Shield tomorrow.

        • @no not me: SPMC/Kodi

        • +1

@MadMaxBargainRoad: @no not me: Kodi, while it has more features, is not nearly as smooth and simple. When you have your media stored on disk there is little reason to require more than metadata, ratings, subtitles, artwork and Trakt.tv supply.

Kodi focused largely on plugins, sadly they tend to have low quality video, so I don't consider it an enjoyable experience. InFuse is a great user experience, Kodi feels unnatural and clunky unless using a mouse because the UI doesn't follow an even grid that directional buttons perfectly support. Even the touch themes for Kodi aren't a great improvement, nor is the on screen keyboard. SPMC, is that the fork of Kodi that is practically the same? I could be confusing it, but I used something similar, maybe that, on my RPi 3, it was just Kodi with a different theme, no real improvement.

        • @no not me:that's your personal preference while the majority disagree. Most of us like to use Kodi and save $250.

      • If the majority of your content is on iTunes and you're bought into their ecosystem, "it's apple" is a perfectly reasonable reason for using it. I've been using one since they launched for iTunes / Netflix / Plex / Udemy and the FTA apps, and it fits my requirements better than the alternatives.

        • +1

If you are locked in iOS then there is no choice no matter how good/bad the shield is.

      • The 4th generation Apple TV also allows you to access HomeKit remotely.
You can unlock your door, turn on lights, and monitor a number of things through it.

      • -2

        Because:
        1) A lot of people have 1080p TVs and have no desire to upgrade them
        2) Whats the point of these codecs without the HD content?
        3) Whats the point in buying something that has a bunch of features that never get used?
        4) UI, accessibility, useability, and a whole bunch of other human interface features make a big difference in whether some people use their gadgets or not

Currently 4K is a little bit like 3D used to be.. all the rage with minimal delivery.. Not all of the TV channels are HD yet.. Not all streaming options are HD yet.. There is no such thing as fibre to home NBN to support amazing UHD content.

The point is, some people have no need to keep up with the edge of technology. Would you buy Geforce GTX 1080 to play minesweeper? Some people simply want to use something that does what its meant to do, its easy to use and simplifies their lives rather than complicates them..

I don't have apple tv, I have a chrome cast. I can certainly see why people would enjoy the experience of using apple tv, and why it simply meets their needs today and for at least a couple of years (with the way that Australian broadcasting and streaming is going).

Edit: Who sells Nvidia Shield in Australia? Where do you get local warranty?

        • -2

So pretty much exactly what I described.

        • @MadMaxBargainRoad:
"Most answers are nonsense like 'it's Apple', 'it's simple to use' or 'I use Plex' etc." You said those people who chose apple tv give nonsense reasons like 'its simple to use' . That reason is not nonsense. And why the neg?

        • @Matt P: The apps aren't great to be honest. InFuse is. If you have an SMB server/old PC/always on PC/Raspberry Pi you can setup the best media centre. Leaps and bounds ahead of Kodi, which honestly pales in comparison in terms of UI. I never used Kodi for the crappy streaming plugins, so InFuse is great for network stored media.

'Where is the cheapest place to get a Nvidia Shield these days?'

        Million $ question

  • Far better boxes than this apple junk. All running Android.

    • -1

Name one good media centre on Android that competes with InFuse? I actually started developing one because there simply isn't any but I quit when I realised I'd only be using it on one flight :P. MPlayerX is a great media player, seriously awesome and I was using the activity to launch playback from my app. ES File Explorer (was) a great SMB browser but is now terrible, there aren't a lot of SMB capable apps out there now. Kodi is mediocre at best, plugins are it's selling point but I never liked any of them due to the poor stream quality, but Kodi supports SMB and media playback, too bad it's not enjoyable to use.

I can't find an application on Android that does the following:

•Reads a Samba share (standard Windows network share, also supported by Linux and macOS).
      •Retrieved metadata and subtitles.
      •Retrieves cover art.
      •Has a native (material) interface.
      •Has decent media controls.

      …then again – iOS/tvOS/whatever only has one – InFuse.

Kodi does all of these but the UI is just not there. I've tried tonnes of skins, none come close to the native OS feel because they don't use the same frameworks. Movian (formally Showtime Media Centre) had a nice fluid UI on the PS3 and the PC ports are also good. Why can't Kodi be that. I have tried it on an RPi 3, RPi 1+ and PC and it's still average at best. InFuse just absolutely obliterates all of these.

Kodi is utter crap in comparison, despite all the themes and skins. Never been a fan of the plugins nor the 360p streamed content so I don't consider it a useful feature /for me/.

      • +1

+1 million for InFuse. Kills anything else really. Plex client on the Xbox is my second favourite. InFuse is the best on iOS and nothing on Android comes close. Would have bought new Android tablets if there was a decent player out there.

        • I have two Android tablets, Nexus and Galaxy Note, both don't even come close in terms of options when you've used InFuse. I want to buy an iPad but I fear it'll be a waste as I only want it for InFuse or maybe and iPad Pro since the Note is kind of crappy for drawing, which I want to get into. I'd love to be able to pickup a cheap tablet or Android box but there's no point, for $15 InFuse is beyond worth it. It's so simple that even my parents use it and absolutely love it. My only gripe is the seeking is not easy to manage on the Apple TV remote, but that's not the InFuse developer's issue as much as it is Apple's. Kodi is pretty frustrating, especially when you hit back and the audio from a video continues to play…

I'm really shocked about the lack of certain obvious applications on Android, there isn't even a great note taking application that'll let me annotate PDFs. The recommended option was absolutely horrific. Especially when compared to OneNote on the Surface, which I've seen people use and it's as smooth as anything. I'm stuck with Android OneNote, without PDF support or Xodo Docs, with average PDF support. Worst of all I'm stuck with the worst palm rejection, capacitive buttons and a hardware button that manages to get clicked when using the pen, but for some reason isn't disabled when the pen is active!

      • +1

I love kodi on my android box and plexus on my xbox. We obviously require different things from our media boxes. All apple products have outstanding UI but limited functionality and grotesquely overpriced otherwise.

      • +1

Stop bashing Kodi without objectively stating what is wrong. Statements like 'Kodi is mediocre at best', 'its not enjoyable to use' etc are personal opinions. I've used Kodi plugins for a long time and streamed 1080p. You don't like the skins and prefer the iOS look? Too bad its your personal choice and I don't see how this means there's no decent media player on Android.

Kodi is one of the most mature media centers out there and was around even before the first iPhone. Yes, I had XMBC loaded on my Xbox original. Back when most didn't care about media center software. So please, appreciate the hundreds of hours that these developers put in without asking for anything in return so that you and I can enjoy Kodi for free.

        • My biggest gripe with Kodi is the UI. There's not always a way to pin things to the main screen, depending on the skin. Video playback and seeking is bad without a mouse or keyboard, having a remote with a rewind button likely helps. In fact, without a remote the experience isn't at all good, you close a video by hitting back and it keeps playing. Now you have to get back to the video to stop it, unless you have a stop button on your remote.

Not sure if it's a feature, but I had multiple things play concurrently when backing out of one video and opening another.

What's great about InFuse is it'll just scan my network drive and pull up the new stuff. Sort it into genres via metadata lookup, sort by ratings, sort by release, etc. From memory Kodi doesn't do such a thing, which would be utterly trivial to implement once metadata scraping is implemented - which Kodi is quite good at. It just seems the focus of Kodi is plugins plugins plugins. They're okay when you first install Kodi but they tire pretty quickly.

If they could simplify Kodi and fix the UI up, it'd be great. Kodi just follows a different direction than what I desire in a media centre. I think that holds true for a lot of people. The reality is that it you just want to stream off a network drive, without any transcoding, InFuse will give you that. Kodi will give you that in a less polished manner, with a bunch of things that you probably don't want, like the weather.

        • +4

@no not me: You haven't spent enough time with Kodi.

"There's not always a way to pin things to the main screen, depending on the skin."
          - The default skin lets you pin stuff on your main screen, as do most skins. Its an open source project, where anyone can create a skin. If an author of a skin chooses not to implement certain functionality, its due to aesthetic/other reasons.

"Video playback and seeking is bad without a mouse or keyboard"
          - Sorry don't agree with this. I've used different remotes including $20 remotes off Ebay that work great that even have built in keypads and are compact. That's the beauty of Kodi. Customize it any way you want, or use default options which work great too.

"Now you have to get back to the video to stop it, unless you have a stop button on your remote"
          - This is a feature which continues playing the video in the background. If you don't like it, you can disable it. Again, its a personal preference and does not reflect on the capability of Android players or Kodi as a whole.

"What's great about InFuse is it'll just scan my network drive and pull up the new stuff. Sort it into genres via metadata lookup, sort by ratings, sort by release, etc."
          - Kodi/XBMC did this ten years ago

"which would be utterly trivial to implement"
          - Genres / metadata scraping has long been part of Kodi. Metadata has been Kodi's strength it was one of the first which pulled info / posters / fan art off TVDB IMDB etc. If you are impressed with these features now, imagine how impressed I was in 2005 when I first ran XBMC on my Xbox

"It just seems the focus of Kodi is plugins plugins plugins"
          - Kodi was written to be a media center. Plugins add on functionality. For example, some people like listening to online radio. Kodi adds a plugin for the same. You don't want it, you don't install it. I don't see how this is a disadvantage. Kodi does everything you need out of a media player out of the box. If you want more functionality, add a plugin (or don't). Plugins allow everyone to add functionality without breaking the main code base.

"If they could simplify Kodi and fix the UI up, it'd be great."
          - Kodi's UI has been refined over the years by UX designers who contribute to the project freely. If you think your ideas are better, contribute. Also, this is a personal preference. You might not like dark backgrounds but 90% of others might. Thats what skins are for.

"Kodi just follows a different direction than what I desire in a media centre."
          - Finally something we both agree on

"I think that holds true for a lot of people"
          - Again, thats your assumption. Kodi has a huge user base. It works on Linux, Windows, AppleTV, ARM and many other platforms. It is as open as open can be.

"The reality is that it you just want to stream off a network drive, without any transcoding"
I don't know what you're implying here. Unlike Plex and others, Kodi will use the device of installation for transcoding (configurable). I run my SMB shares of a HP N40L which is a low powered server. If Kodi were to transcode on the server itself, it would choke on 1080p streams.

"Kodi will give you that in a less polished manner, with a bunch of things that you probably don't want, like the weather."
          - Sigh. Disable the weather if you don't like it mate. Settings screen

Kodi is actually quite nice once you learn to use it the right way. I've introduced Kodi to many people and they've loved it. I'm not forcing you to use Kodi or give it another go. If InFuse fits your bill, great.

        • What else do you expect from an iShush? He just wanted to let other people know he's locked down by Apple and feel good about it.

    • What is it about the Apple TV that you think is junk?

      • The sub-par features for a $300 TV box. If you just need 1080p then get yourself a Chromecast.

        • An apple TV can be purchase for $239, you don't have to buy the $299 version.

To use chromecast you would also need other devices - an Apple TV is a stand alone device.

Your issue seems to be the price/value aspect. Do you think there is anything technically wrong with the Apple TV?

        • @SirDale: No 4k and Overpriced?

        • @MadMaxBargainRoad:

I'll take that to mean you just think the price/value isn't there.
You haven't yet come up with a technical reason, apart from "no 4K".

        • @SirDale: Rofl, honestly iSheeps are just mindless. By the same logic, nothing is technically wrong with a Toyota Yarris either. However, if they price it at $59,999 I would call them a piece of junk.

Bought a MXQ S805 Android box a year ago for about $50 delivered (from AUS). Its still going strong and able to watch any movie, tv show, cable channel free of charge with Kodi, unlike Apple TV where you have to wait for a jailbreak to be released to install Kodi.

Unless, of course, you have an Apple TV 2 which you can jailbreak. But then again, those cost $150-200+ on eBay. I'm not against Apple or anything, nor am I an Android fanboy.

I own an iPhone 6+, Macbook Pro, iPad Air 2, but I just can't justify spending $300 on an Apple TV when there's plenty of other alternatives for a fraction of the price

    • +1

FWIW, it's possible to side load Kodi on to the ATV 4. No jailbreak required.

    • Just buy Mr Mc and all your troubles will be gone

  • Is this any good? Can anyone please explain to me what so special about these(especially considering that you are locked to itunes store)? I have xbox one and i use it for some netflix and to play specific games like forza or call of duty.

    • It's no use getting this iTV, i mean iConsole, I mean Apple TV.

The Nintendo Switch is coming out next year.\
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5uik5fgIaI&spfreload=10

    • You aren't locked to iTunes Store.
I personally used Infuse when I had mine (14 day return policy at Apple). Worked fantastically. in fact, the ONLY reason I returned it was because I had trouble with hi10p content @ 1080p

    • You wouldn't need it unless you have a lot invested in the Apple store. Xbox has you covered for most stuff. I really only use the Xbox now, since it covers most activities. Works great for Hulu, Netflix, and Plex.

  • +2

People who are comparing $50 android boxes to ATV4… SUCH a bad comparison. Having used both (and settled on a Shield), those cheapies are nothing compared to this. Yeah, it may support playback of certain files, but the user experience can not be ignored. Apple TV was a pleasure to use, whereas the cheap boxes (in my experience) have been at worst, pieces of crap, and at best, frustrating experiences.

    • +1

Apple TV is pretty smooth and nice, even the screen savers are pretty nice. The remote is kind of cumbersome where precision is needed and manually entering text with the remote is a real step in the wrong direction compared to the ATV3. That said, there's some decent applications (InFuse, no affiliation, I swear, it's just that good). I'd buy a RPi 3 any day before I put money towards one of those crappy boxes, same price, but more capable, IMO.
