  • I assume with VDSL2 this will work on the "NBN"

    • Yes. You wouldn't need this if you have NBN

      • +2

        NBN or "NBN"?

    • +1

Good modem if you're in an area that has TPG FTTB as well.

    ADSL :|

  • -3

    this is cheaper at $248.00 - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Netgear-Nighthawk-R7000-Wireless-…

only get $50 back so save $2 better :)

    • +5

      No modem in that one.

      • -4

true - I have telstra velocity fibre so only need pppoe on WAN port.

      • If I have real NBN now but think I might move to an ADSL house in the future, should I get OPs deal with the modem in it? I think I'm going to need a good router for all those damn smart bulbs I ordered.

    • +1

      Different model without modem

    • +2

More than likely a better choice though for most users if they have a ISP supplied modem/router though.

    • +1

      Different model dude

  • Bit of a noob here with models stuff. i have FTTN which is VDSL. can i simple swap out the netcomm modem that i got from exetel?

    Cheers

    • +2

      https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/fttn_registered_modem_router

It's not a registered NBN modem/router but it will work. Be aware that NBN could refuse to attend faults if you're using non-registered equipment.

        Thanks mate

    • +1

Yep, i have FTTN through TPG and swapped out the Huawei they supply for the D7000. Worked fine, i did have to set some settings to match the supplied modem by using the supplied first and inspecting the preset settings. Not sure what the Netcomm one need from exetel but i documented my steps here

      • Thanks heaps. I run a plea server around the house and to a few remote clients. hopefully this can keep up with it better than the netcomm?

        • I found the coverage much better than my alternative

    • +1

I can confirm the d7000 works on exetel nbn

      • Thanks heaps. I run a plea server around the house and to a few remote clients. hopefully this can keep up with it better than the netcomm?

        • Not likely to make a huge difference, probably be a lot more stable though. I run a R7000 on 100/40 Fibre and have no issues with 3-4 remote streams going.

        • @XeKToReX: thanks bud

    • Also wondering if this would be an ideal choice to swap out a netcomm wireless nf10w modem I got from ACN. Additionally can I use this also as a WiFi bridge to my netcomm modem for extra range?

  • Noob here too, I have cable and currently using Optus stock two in one router/modem. Would this modem/router increase my speed/enhance my network experience?

    Thanks for your help guys.

    • +1

It may improve your wireless speeds but not your Optus cable throughput.

      • Thanks

        • +1

You could add the wireless only version noted previously

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Netgear-Nighthawk-R7000-Wireless-…

All u need to do is turn off the WIFI on the optus modem and turn off DHCP on the nighthawk. Then you would be using the nighthawk for your wifi but the optus modem for dhcp.

Will improve RANGE that's for sure

        • +1

@ode1: I have Telstra Cable and that's exactly what I did. Much better wireless range and speeds for my needs than the router supplied by Telstra. Just turn the old router into bridge mode and you are set to go.

      • Incorrect depending on what the user is doing and what router Optus supplies.

It's unlikely that Optus supplies a router than can keep up with torrents being shared on a 100Mbit connection.

  • Fantastic, a decent modem/router was on my list of things to buy anyway- I'm moving house soon and need one.

  • How does this compare to the Asus DSL-AC68U?

    • Both are good modem routers, just depends on the distance to the exchange. D7000 has boardcom chip which is good for long distance to the exchange.

      • What's considered long? Also how does it handle short let's say up to 1Km

  • NBN FTTP - any point in purchasing this model?

    • It probably has superior wifi speeds and coverage compared to whatever you have now.

  • +1

heads up to anyone wanting to get this for optus NBN fttn (perhaps other isp's).

i purchased this one from harvey norman a few days after getting optus nbn on at home. i normally sync at 100/40 with the optus provided modem router. however when using this netgear model my sync speed dropped to 80/30 which was a good enough reason to take it back for a refund.

theres a whole bunch of drama involved in getting optus nbn to work on another vdsl modem to add to these woes.

im still using the thing optus provided despite the crap wifi. personally im waiting for a better model to come out.

    • Thanks for the heads up :)

      Stop the nodes.

… and thanks to Tony and Malcom you won't. You win.

        • -1

7 years of labor delivered 5% of nation access to the nbn for $billions. Now the money's run out it's not Malcolm fault. Just poorly budgeted and poorly planned

        • +1

          @Gavman:
Just like the loan you took on your house, every major infrastructure project requires a large outlay, even a loan to get it started. The payback is long term.
I doubt you realise just how gullible Tony and Malcolm think you are to have actually bought into their carefully packaged argument in order to protect interests that did not want universal and ubiquitous high speed access. Luckily for them, by the time you will it will be too late.
On the other hand, if you're Telstra shareholder, you did win. It don't make you any less gullible, but it does make you wealthier.
