Was Hit by A Car! Hit and Run!

So.. After a long gruelling day at the grocery store today, my mother found a note on the windshield which states that a light blue mitsubishi 4WD scraped the right side of my car. I presume a good Samaritan saw this event unfolding and quickly jotted down the Mod: Foul Language license plate and car model and colour and placed it on the windshield.

I really want to find the Mod: Foul Language that did a runner! I want to make his/her ass pay for what he did to mother's car.

If anyone has advice, please show me the way. PS- i have the car's license plate number - colour - model etc.

Thanks

UPDATE: Holy Sh*it !!! I think I've lost the note that the witness' wrote! :O

Go to insurance and claim it and get it fixed

The tone is not how its meant to be read man.

Use of the c word doesn't exactly help the tone if you're trying to be sarcastic or something

Definitely. Was picturing OP lying on the side of the road all battered and bruised.

It's just a carpark prang, happens everywhere, everyday. If you have a rego put it in the hands of your insurance company.

  • +3

Did the witness leave their contact details?

  • +4

I hope for your sake, the witness that left the note also left their contact details as well??

If not, you got no witness or proof the other car did it.

    • +3

Yes, witness` name and address was left on note.

      • +30

        That witness deserves a beer!

        • Heh, would have been funny if the witness details were fake and made up or someone else's! hahahahaha

    • +4

      I've been very lucky.

Same thing happened to me, but witness did not leave contact details.

I made a police statement and they got another police station closer to where the offender lives to pay them a visit.

The police rocked up to his/her place, they didn't dispute it and they received a fine. The police didn't release the arsehole's details to me.

From the arsehole's point of view, there must a bona fide witness otherwise how would the police know where to come knocking.

So to the witness out there, I don't know who you are, but thank you, saved me a $750 excess and kept my good insurance record.

  • +6

How do you know it's a Good Samaritan who placed the note and not the person who caused it?

    • +1

I was thinking exactly the same thing.

    • +3

Because the person who wrote it, also included his/her name and address. And the way the witness wrote the note suggested that it wasnt the person who wrote it. Eg. Blue mitsubishi hit your car. He drove off..
Etc. I am a witness etc.

    • do you 2 not have common sense? takes year 4 logic to think and go "oh the note might have been written in a certain way"

  • +1

Perhaps ring citizens advice? They are very helpful and deal with this sort of thing on a daily basis.

  • +4

How much is the damage likely to cost?
In some/all jurisdictions it is illegal to leave the scene of an accident - especially without first reporting to police.
I believe this applies in NSW.
So - as well as notifying your insurer you should also call the cops and dob their asses in.

    • +1

Yes, they should be reported to the cops. They'll be charged with leaving the scene of am accident and maybe more.

      • +1

Not with carpark accidents. Cops couldn't care less about a carpark 'bingle'

        • +4

In my experience they do care. Twice in 3 years we've had it happen and the police have been great.

        • +2

          @crosswire:

Fair enough :) I've always heard they don't

        • Why not? (besides being too busy catching parents dropping their kids off at school in the wrong spot).

A person damaged someone else's property on another property and left.

  • +6

OP to Police/ Insurance Co. "So what did you do first after becoming aware of the damage? I went on Ozbargain and asked for advice.."

  • +5

OP - ring your local Police Assistance Line, describe the situation calmly and request an Event Number. You should provide this to the insurance company.

Then ring your Local Area Command and ask for 'Traffic' Unit, and explain the situation (no foul language). Depending on operational priorities, Traffic may be able to look up the vehicle, speak to the registered owner and inspect their vehicle for damage. If corroborating damage is identified, the POI may be charged re leaving the scene of an accident, possibly neg driving (etc).

    Good luck x

    • Why bother trying to chase it up? Just log it with the Police assistance line, then leave it up to the insurance company to have your car fixed (if it is necessary)

If the police want to follow it up, then good. If the insurance company want their money back, they will follow it up on your behalf.

If you don't have comprehensive insurance then it may be worth following it up to get some 'justice'

      • +2

        Justice.

      • +1

Perhaps the insurance xs and increased premiums?

  • I am in QLD so may vary with state and company.

However, my 18 year old son, several years ago, was rammed up the back while stopped At a ref d light for at least 30 secs before collision.

Being young and inexperienced, he had name, make, model, colour, registration, insurance company etc but no address. He was going to have to pay a massive excess unless we could give the address too. I had made him talk to them for the details (take responsibility) so luckily I found the name in the phone book while he was talkng to them and we were OK and he paid a lower excess.

The police wouldn't have provided the address but the insurance required it. Strangely it was the same company that insured him, so that may be why too. Just another way to reduce their own costs.

Therefore, certainly talk to insurance ASAP, but that it was hit and run and the witness details - you may later provide name and address etc if found. Also report it to police.

Had a shit day at work and you guys gave me a good laugh. Better than comedy show!
    Thanks!!

You can report it to the police but I doubt they'll do anything. I was rear-ended at the lights by some (profanity) who freaked out and just drove off through traffic to the next turn. I got his plate and reported it to the police station immediately since it was only literally down the road a short distance. They weren't interested and told me to lodge it online. So I went home and did just that. I never heard anything, they never did anything at all. The computer probably prints a report which falls straight into a shredder.

Heaven help you if you've got a gram of green herbs though because then you're in some serious trouble and they've suddenly got rockets up their arses.

    • +1

Same thing happened to me. I was rear end as well at an intersection. The bastard who did it just drove off as soon as I pulled over to sort it out. I reported it to the police immediately and was given a report number. That was it. I follow up a few times but they didn't do jack shit and just don't care. Police are useless in event like this. I gave up because one the damage done to my car was minimal and my car was old with a few scratches. I just feel that it is unfair no thing is done to those hit and run bastard.
I hope you get it sorted in your favour op

  • I think you might need to get a police report for hit and run?

But it might depend on your insurer too. I found my insurance to be very lazy - last time my car got scratch but luckily the guy left his phone number. I called him and get his license number and car rego (because I thought that's all I need). Submitted it to my insurance but then was told that I need to pay my excess since I didn't provide the guy's address. I was like - you've got his license and registration, can't you find out his address? Insurance told me to call the guy (and yes I also gave my insurance his phone number) and ask his address otherwise I need to pay the excess.
