NSW Drivers Licence - legalities around!

Greeting OzBargainers!

I bought a flip wallet for my IPhone the other day (was reduced from $35 to $10). The wallet that is!!

The wallet has internal storage for 2 credit cards - thinking of debit card plus mediscare card here.

Just wondering if it is legal (in NSW) to carry a picture of your drivers licence as a picture on your phone rather than drive around with it?

That way I could carry the 2 cards I am thinking of having with me.

Hope I am making sense?

        Now where do you live?

some countries like the usa requires that the driver provide the rego at random stops.

Set up the Medicare app in your phone. In the app your Medicare card is displayed when you flip your phone to the side (make sure screen rotate is on). I've had no problems using this anywhere I've been asked for my Medicare card as it's the same (just as 'legal') as using the physical card. Then you have room for your license to be your 2nd card..

Perhaps look at an iPhone cover that suits your needs. The missus has one that has multiple card spots, and would have been cheap off eBay or aliexpress.

  • I thought someone here previously said in NSW you can also just bring your ID to a station within 24 hours.

Never understood why they got rid of registration stickers. Now I have no idea if the car I stole or borrowed is even registered.

  • I left my DL in the car

        Driver licence

      • There is a hard link in the glove box. But you need to soften it up before dropping it into omnibox.

  • surely this is a simple solution, just put the license in your glovebox?

  • Put it in a safe place in your car and ditch the medicare card at home and use medicare app. Now you'll have to work out what to use the extra space for! Enable Apple/Android Pay, and now you're really screwed for filling your wallet.

Maybe there's something I don't understand, but why would you choose to carry your Medicare card (which you only need when you go to the doctor's) over your driver's license (which you need every time you drive). I drive every day, I go to the doctor around two or three times a year.

    • Just in case…..

    • Unless you are under 26 or don't have a full licence you don't need it 'every time you drive' (in Vic.)

  • I have one like that for my Samsung - you'll find while there's only 2 slots, you can actually fit more than 1 card in each slot. You'll be fine.

    I'm a thin wallet subscriber.

I have a colour photocopy of my Medicare card, never in 10 years had a problem using that. Places just want the number and the number you are on the card.

Back of the Medicare card thin copy has my woolies reward barcode, Myers one barcode and a few other loyalty/card numbers: hertz, qantas, virgin, etihad, boat licence.

I always carry my physical drivers licence, never know when you'll need to produce it.

There are apps to store your extra cards, for example with Commbank you can store as many cards as you wish, you basically take a picture of your cards (e.g. for me I store the rewards cards) and when I need them I just scan them from my phone screen.

you're just being a knob trying to play around with law in this respect - take your licence and drop your medicare card. unless you've got some chronic disease I don't see what the big issue here is tbh?

    Push 2 cards into 1 slot. /thread

  • Drivers License is the most important thing to carry, especially if you're driving (mandatory).

You don't need your medicare card (number should be sufficient) but it helps to identify your medical services/history if you're incapacitated and need assistance.

Shove a few cards into the same slot.

  • I never carry my drivers licence, the police always just ask me for my name, remind me to carry it and move me along. I think there's a bit more pressure on mainland cops though to issue fines.

  • Simple slip your drivers licence under your phone cover considering how often you have to take it out shouldnt be a major nuisance. Also you can fit more than one card into a wallet slot.

  • I just had a look and in South Australia, the motor vehicles act of 1959 states you have up to 48 hours to produce your licence to a police station if you don't have it on you.
