Amazon Echo Dot 2nd Gen Black/White $81.75 Delivered (Preorder) @ B&H Photo Video

Cheapest deal I could find seeing as though Amazon doesn't ship to Australia.

Most sellers on eBay US charge $30-40 for shipping, plus there is currently only one listed on eBay AU for $130.

$49.99 USD + $12.26 shipping = $62.25 USD, converted to approx AUD = $81.75 AUD (currency rates change frequently)

At checkout, choose shipping as 'DHL Saver - $12.26' as it's the cheapest delivery option (still 3-5 delivery which is fast). If you want it delivered faster, there's other delivery options too.

Thanks to systmworks for the tip - there's a cheaper option for delivery if you buy 2, US$20 vs $12 for a single one. So you save $2 per device ordering a pair

How to set up Amazon Echo in Australia (https://devdiner.com/internet-of-things/how-do-i-set-up-an-a…)

27/10/2016 - UPDATE

I have recently got in touch with B&H customer service regarding pre-orders, and was told that they're completely out of stock so the next batch will be in stock on 11/11/2016
The previous date was 05/11 but sadly got pushed ahead.

This might be a huge deal-breaker for some people, despite how cheap they're selling it for compared to other sites. However, I am now thinking of cancelling my pre-order and looking to buy elsewhere as I don't really want to wait that long…

    • Well i noticed it was Nov 6 when i first looked at this post .. i dont think it has changed … when you consider Amazon will release these on October 20 .. so by the time the B&H order is made .. shipped to B&H .. go through their processing etc .. it will be a couple of weeks later than the release date

    • It's just an estimate, they will ship it out earlier

    • I had pre-ordered from amazon but cancelled it when i saw this due to ease of shipping, and for some reason i assumed it was the same date, But im happy to wait in order to save some $$

      • I'm the same, it's just too expensive on eBay like $135 and they don't even have them in Black…

I could spend more and get a preowned Echo if I wanted to spend that much lol

  • Will there a be currency conversion charges if we pay using card or paypal..

I have been charging some extra bucks from Bank every time I pay in USD.. which will be in this case too…!!

    • If you pay using card with PayPal it automatically converts it so I'm guessing there should be no charge. It's a good idea to call your bank and ask first though

    • You should get a credit card with zero currency conversion fees. I believe 28 Degrees, Coles Mastercard, and several others offer this.

Generally when retailers like Amazon convert prices for you on the site, and charge in your chosen currency (rather than their native currency) they do so at a pretty poor rate, so you end up paying more.

As a general rule, pay in the native currency (often USD) and let your no-forex-fee credit card do the conversion. PayPal also have pretty sucky conversion rates.

Alexa, do I need one of these in my home?

    Yes!

  • I'm not sure what sort of proximity you need to be with these to get a good result in voice commands but I may grab two for now and see how it goes.

Anyone cover their single storey home with just one?

    • No - unless you yell - Alexa often wont hear you if you are in another room (door open or closed).

Even a large open plan area may require a loud voice if you are on the other side of the room from the device (so best to try place centrally in a large area). You generally need 1 per room (living room, bedroom, office etc) where you want the Alexa features.

  • So I just received 6 of these, great little units. I have an original Alexa which I set up a year ago, but I can't remember how to change the time zone on these bad boys. I know you can't change the address anymore (I never could with my original one anyway), but I can't remember how I changed the time to local time. Any ideas?

    • Where did you receive 6 from?

Are you selling any? because I really cbf waiting until November to receive mine from B&H :l

Also, go to the link on the description as it tells you how to change the time

      • 6 from Amazon via Shipito. Not selling at this time.

        • Just curious to know how much shipito charged?

        • @philhawthorne: it was about $70 Aussie for TNT express. I got it within 4 days of release landed in Aus.

        • @thorton82: Cheers!

    • +2

My 6 are on the way. (I used slower shipping :-)

I've recently set my echo timezone using the advice here: http://beebom.com/how-to-set-up-and-use-amazon-echo-outside-…

      Good Luck!

  • So how do we know if we were part of the first batch that is now out of stock? Im presuming that @koalafied was one of the first to purchase this deal on ozbargain. It seems a bit rubbish that they were still taking orders with the date of 5/11 knowing full well they had run out of stock

    • Seems like the website is still saying 6/11 as well.

Their store has been closed this weekend, it only re-opened about 24 hours ago. So they might have a bit of a backlog to get through.

    • I will never know if anybody from OB purchased it prior to me posting this deal, as there's been a lot of deals from B&H posted here in the past, so many people lurk B&H and probably saw it before me but didn't bother to post. But what I do know is that we're definitely not part of the first batch.

One thing I don't understand is: why do they accept pre-orders if they're going to run out of stock? They certainly knew the Echo Dot would be a sell out just like it was on Amazon. IMO, they shouldn't ask for a payment UNTIL they receive the stock in hand and the order is about to be shipped. And rather than having pre-orders they should have a Backorder.

When I asked the CS agent why do they bother taking payments if they're going to run out of stock, their reply was: "The Echo is completely sold out - we will be receiving a new shipment on the 11th of November, 2016." and no further comments.

Good thing is that DHL Saver takes 4-5 days to deliver to Australia so people will most likely receive it on the 16th or the latest 17th. If I happen to find a cheaper or slightly more expensive deal, I'll be sure to post it on here.

I want to get a refund but I'm not sure how long they take to process refunds to PayPal

      • B&H only charge international orders at time of order placement. Domestic orders don't charge to card until order is fulfilled I believe.

  • I received an email this morning advising still out of stock. I sent them an email and they replied saying they expect my 18th October order to arrive at warehouse on 15th November. There must be a large backlog. They really should update their website though because as of this morning it is still showing expected availability as 6th November.

    • Ahh damn. They are so slow at updating customers, it's very annoying!

    • Yeah I got the same email on Sunday 30/10. Im not worried, Ive got an Echo so not in a hurry to add the Dot.

      • I was talking to customer service on live chat about 2 weeks ago, and one of the guys said my order should 100% be filled on the next batch of shipment.

So today I logged in to check the status and it says 'Backorder'.

Immediately cancelled the order. I ordered on the 15th of October and they still can't manage to fill the order. I will be taking my business elsewhere :-) I have even told them that they should order at least 1000 Echo's because it's always a sell-out on release date…

Luckily though, I bought one from an Australian seller on eBay as I had a good feeling B&H would delay the order.

      • Looks like the Echo is back in stock!

        Got this in live chat:

We have received your item in stock today and it is currently set to ship out from us either today or tomorrow. As soon as it does ship, you will receive an email with tracking information.

  • Still can't set them to local time, keep getting a 400 error. Anyone successful?

      • Actually got it working on the weekend, cheers though. Do have a problem where it doesn't light up all my Hue lights In a cluster though. It's weird, and random.

        • That's great news! Which tutorial did you follow? I haven't received my Echo Dot 2 yet, however it will be arriving in 1-2 days so I'll be using that guide to set it up. I have bought LIFX bulbs which I'm using now, and have a Wemo Starter Pack on the way so hopefully I can get those to work with the Echo.

Do you use IFTTT? You can create a recipe to light them all up at once, someone has probably created it already on the recipe store so it's worth a look.

        • +1

@koalafied: nah IFFFT is rubbish because you have to say trigger before you say anything. I prefer native apps. That's why I dumped wemo bulbs in favour of Hue. Yonomi is supposed to be better, but I couldn't get it to work properly. I used the tutorial at the top of this page, works the best.

  • Just received one of the Echo's I bought off eBay. Will give it a test drive now…

  • B&H order shipped! Good luck guys, I'm sure everybody will have their Echo's soon :D

  • +1

My white DOT from B&H has just shipped out - yay :D

  • +1

Patiently waiting for it to arrive………..

  • +1

I ordered on the 6th November and live chat said they expect more stock of the black on the 15th.

    • Still on order. Chat now says 18th (US time).

      • Well they really had no idea about stock as I received a shipping confirmation this morning.

  • I placed an order on the 30th October and have been patiently waiting for any new information. Today I received this helpful email, "The following is still out of stock: item - Echo Dot Wireless Adapter (2nd Generation, Black)." Can't tell if they're being polite or just rubbing it in…

    • +1

Read the comment above yours - hopefully both of yours will get shipped on the next batch which B&H are apparently receiving tomorrow.

I cancelled my order and after 1-2 hours I received an email saying there was a mistake on their end and that its just been shipped out. I bought another one off an aussie seller on eBy when B&H told me that my order was going to be delayed because I just couldn't wait that long to have it in hand.

One thing I can say is that its definitely worth the wait! You will fall in love with it :-)

    • +1

My white one, ordered 17/10, is with DHL courier, should arrive in Oz in the next couple of days.

I'm sure yours will ship out in the next few days in the next batch.

      • Mine arrived just yesterday, now I have 2 Echo's set up around the house :-)
Took roughly 10 days after shipped notification

  • I ordered 1 x black and 1 x white on 18th October, got the out of stock email 3rd November. My black arrived 8th November but was told the white was expected 15th. Last Friday it changed from "on order" to "processing" so I expected both would be shipped today (especially as systmworks white one has shipped). Online chat have just told me they expect it in stock on 17th. I really hope yours will be in the next batch, but based on my experience, I wouldn't count on it.

    • Update: I received shipped email this morning.

  • Mine was shipped on the 8th Novemeber and got into Sydney on the 14th. How ever still got to get to Perth yet. Hopefully soon. I called DHL and they said as its economy shipment it may take up to 10 days to clear through customs :(

  • Mine shipped on the 8th of November and transport to destination counry on the 9th. It finally said "arrived at destination country" on the 17th and not delivered yet.

7+ days going between US and AU? DHL Saver is the worst…. I've received stuff from aliexpress via china post faster

    • Took about 10 days for me after the shipment notification

      • Mine still shows "Transport to Destination Country" and I've received shipping notification on the 8th…

    • Received mine today.

  • My White DOT arrived to the Gold Coast this morning.
Ordered 16/10, so around 5 week turnaround. Shipped 11/11 so 1.5 weeks shipping.

  • +1

I received mine today and was pretty impressed with it. Went back to B&H to order 2 more … and yeah the price is even lower now.

It costs now only 39.99USD + 18.90 USD shipping (for 2) —> so comes to 49.44 USD each delivered (67 AUD)
I ordered the white one as they had stock. Looks like you can only order 2 at that price.

  • +2

I can't believe how long this shipping is taking. Left NY on 17th November, that's the last tracking event.

    • +1

I can't believe it ether, mine was ordered on the 20/10 not dispatched until 16/11 (they were selling them for $39.99 on this day - grrrrr) and mine is still on route to destination country 2 weeks later (seems to have taken a vacation in Hawaii)

B&H sent me an email today asking me for a review of the DOT - not easy as I don't have it - grrrrrrr

      • +1

Yeah I saw that review email like salt in the wounds. I wish I had it a while back as if it worked out well I may have purchased another during Black Friday sales.

I did call up DHL and they indicated it would arrive on Friday, but I'm not holding my breath.

        • I sent a good long email whinge to B&H - won't do any good

        • @redhotchilli: Finally got into Sydney on Friday. Now I wonder how long it will take to get to Melbourne. It's meant to be delivered by auspost, so you can use the other tracking number to check, but there's no info on mine on auspost site yet.

        • +1

@marquise: yes saw that it's now in Sydney, I'm hoping for a Aussie Post Wednesday delivery for me in Melbourne, hopefully they haven't brought out the DOT-V3 before then :)

        • @redhotchilli: I'm going overseas on Friday, will be absolutely pissed if I miss the delivery.

        • @marquise: Hi, where do you see it as being in Sydney? Auspost still shows mine as "pending", no indication of it reaching Sydney. So no change for me since 17th November, DHL still "transport to destination country". I just phoned DHL and they said to contact B&H to launch a delay investigation.

        • @snufl: I see it on the DHL tracking, perhaps yours is on a slower boat?

        • +1

@marquise: Or canoe :) Thanks for that, guess I'll have to send an email to B&H.

        • @marquise: do they send you another email with auspost tracking number?

        • @username1: AusPost will use the UPS tracking number that you can see in the DHL tracking - mine is LX????????US

        • @redhotchilli: ahh right. Don't see that yet

        • +2

@username1: Mine was delivered today :) (Melbourne)

        • +1

          @redhotchilli: Same! Success

        • +1

Received mine today as well. Ordered on the 30th October - so a good 5 week turnaround. Speedy.

  • Got my Dot, but can't change timezone (cURL keeps complaining about "Could not Resolve Host" and the Request Maker :(

    • +1

Ok, figured it out - the link to Request Maker asked to search for Device-Preferences, but it didn't return what I needed. I then looked for "timezoneid", found the entry and modified it from:

      "timeZoneId":null

      to

      "timeZoneId":"Australia/Sydney"

  • I've changed my timezone, but I'm also interested in changing my location. Anyone figured it out? On the old echo, the following hack used to work:
    https://devdiner.com/internet-of-things/how-do-i-set-up-an-a…

However, looks like there's a new field not mentioned (label), and my cURL pushes keep getting rejected.
    :(

    • +1

From discussions on Whirlpool, location no longer possible, you can only change timezone.

      • Thanks for the update. (and also for frequenting this old thread :)
