LIFX Globes - White 800 $19.99 USD ($26 AUD) - Colour 1000 $39.99 USD ($52 AUD)

890

Hi All,

Currently i am obsessed with LIFX globes; slowly converting all lamps to wifi enabled. I noticed today the globes seem to be on sale, $10 off the whites and $20 off the colour. Not sure if anyone has any functioning coupon codes. I tried a few but to no avail.

In addition to the sale i also noticed they have a couple of new products. They seem a bit expensive though especially for the LED strip:

LIFX+:
Brighten your space, even in the dark. With the help of infrared the LIFX+ takes your smart home to another wavelength by enhancing the vision of your home security camera

LIFXZ:
Fine-tune your lighting with custom controlled LED strips. Select from a spectrum of color for 8 individually addressable zones and express your creativity. Illuminate under cabinets, cornices or behind televisions for the perfect bias lighting.

I'm totally obsessed with planning my smart home setup while not having made a single purchase yet! I hope LIFX get homekit support soon otherwise Ill have to buy Hue. Thanks for the deal!

Homekit requires a special Apple specific chip to be physically inside the device, so unless Apple changes their stance, LifX will have to put out a new range of bulbs to support it. It's not LifX's fault, and it's no coincidence that Philips Hue is the ONLY home kit bulb on the market (and extremely expensive).

Apple claim it's for security, but I don't see it. A lightbulb is not a garage door, nobody can do any damage with it. Plus, you can already control your LifX from your iPhone, all I'm asking is for Siri and Control Centre to be able to send those commands without me opening the app.

It might however be possible to use Homekit via a wifi bridge and connect existing bulbs to that. Seems unlikely LifX would bother, but it's possible, in fact you can already do it with a third party tool if you have a computer that's always on.

Apple claim it's for security, but I don't see it. A lightbulb is not a garage door, nobody can do any damage with it.

Right, it's not like Internet of Things is a huge security (profanity) or anything letting people into your networks from over the internet.

          Ditch the security, good move!

        • +4

The problem with many IoT devices is that they're insecure and act as a beachhead for attackers on your home network. While they might not be able to do anything by themselves, they give attackers a foot in the door, from which they can attack the rest of your devices. It may sound far fetched, but it's actually fairly common.

        • +1

@cxeq: "INTERNET"… these things have cloud Comand & Control, sometimes really bad eg: https://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/40397.html

        • @Diji1: As I said - the iPhone ALREADY controls the bulb, and I'm simply asking for Siri and Control Centre to control it too, which could be done entirely on the device. The phone ALREADY controls the bulb.

By your logic they have to take the bulb off sale entirely since it's already on wifi. Why isn't Apple banning it from the app store if it's such a vulnerability?

        • @Praeto: Well the iPhone already controls the bulb over the internet, so I guess by your logic Apple had better ban it from the app store and LifX had better take it off of sale altogether. Or they could just let Siri integrate with it and send the same commands which couldn't be any more of a security problem since the phone ALREADY controls the bulb.

        • @MrMcHairyHead:

It's not a technical issue, it's a branding one. They don't want to put their HomeKit brand on something that isn't running their chip, and secured to the standards they expect. There is a big difference between a 3rd party product and one endorsed with the Apple brand.

      • Might be worth investing now?

Not really - LIFX have been misleading customers for HomeKit support out of the box… it has been the elephant in the room.

        https://community.lifx.com/t/lets-address-the-homekit-elepha…

    • +1

If you have something at home running all the time like a NAS you can use homebridge and hook up the LIFX to homekit right now.

    • +2

I use my LIFX with Siri through homekit.
I have a server on 24/7 already so running this along with it wasnt too much of a hassle.

      https://github.com/brutella/hklifx

It can be a bit fiddly to setup at the start but works great. (Better on CentOS then Windows)

      • +2

Interesting, if you can do it on a server they should be able to do in in firmware!

        • Since it's just random hobbyist code and Apple could find a way to block it I'd say the don't want to risk it. You may be able to run it of a openwrt router though

        • I think you might be overestimating the amount of both processing power and storage they have in these lights. Most likely I'm expecting Lifx to eventually come out with a hub or bridge of their own that will enable Apples Home support - which will negate the benefit these globes have over other systems such as Hues.

    • +2

Wait, you've been planning and went with homekit!? Work for Apple?

    • -2

lol homekit another POS apple crack app for all the iSHEEP

  • Do these work with a dimmer switch?

    • +3

You wont need a dimmer switch. They can be dimmed from the app. In fact its best to ignore the physical light switch and leave it physically turned on and do all the controlling from the app

      • +5

Dimmer switch is more convenient. App is nice but takes too long. Pass.

        • +1

You are correct. The ease of use of a physical switch is advantageous. Initially i changed all the main lights rather than lamps, but it became too annoying to have to get my phone to see anything. For lamps its great though.

Before anyone comments i realise you can activate them with an 'off then on' or 'on/off/on', but the Mrs kept leaving the switch in the off position.

        • Used with Logitech Pop or Flic switches you can have button operated dimming to preset levels & colours. I have the POP and they work by themselves (with a wifi network) once programmed.

Lots of discussion in the last deal for Lifx

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/262424

        • @wfdTamar: I am very tempted by the POP, but the price is a bit too much than im willing to pay currently. Hopefully they will come down to a reasonable level.

Recently ive not been hearing great thing about the FLIC especially the way its bluetooth

        • Just get HomeKit bulbs like Hue and say "Hey Siri, dim the lights to 37%" or whatever the command actually is.

        • @AustriaBargain: You can also do this with Amazons Echo with LIFX

    • No, they do not

  • +7

These things are totally effing great. Super happy with the purchase

That being said, i would probably consider just the White versions - its a bit of a gimmick to have colours and whatnot

    • +2

You can do red light and leave it on during the night… apparently studies have shown that red light is best as it wont disturb your sleep, whereas whites, blues etc. impact your brain etc.

      • +8

Why would you have any lights on while sleeping?

        • +24

          To keep the monsters away

        • +11

          @jackwoz:
A red light on all night might keep the monsters away but it will attract all the perverts and creeps.

        • +2

Not while sleeping, but between sunset and going to sleep.

        • +1

@MrMcHairyHead: So I can feel like I'm in a red light district every evening?

        • @lainey13: Yes, each night 2 - 3 prostitutes will show up at your house, who will then have sex with you which will then relax you and help you get to sleep.

      • +4

no light would be the most beneficial. If you HAD to have a light on, dim red would be the best.

      • nothing beats complete darkness which is how i sleep, also best way scientifically

    • +1

Haha I do this right now and the red has now been hardwired into my brain to put me right to sleep. My bathroom light is just the regular White version though probably don't need it in there

  • +1

maybe a silly question but is it possible to get wifi LED Downlights?

    • +1

I believe they used to but for some reason stopped.I hear on the grape vine they may try again. The only type that are available in a 'downlight' version are the BR30

      • +5

Keep an eye out end 2016/early 2017 for news on this.

        • +1

          Cool, will do.
My apartment is full of those small led downlights. Would be cool to replace them with some wifi/smart bulbs.
Wasnt sure if no one made them because the housing is so small

        • +2

@matt90: yeah we had a GU10 for Kickstarter but they were too big and expensive to make. Back to the drawing board for that one.

        • +2

          @kavalier27:

great, well good luck with it and hope to see some product developments come

    • +1

Seems to work ok for me, even though there is a 5 second delay or so

    • +1

Yes but I'm no big expert with ITTT. Still, have been frustrated enough to leave it on the back burner.

  • Some android apps like twilight support phillips bulbs which has no wifi, not sure abt these

    • I dont believe they support LIFX, yet

  • +1

Are these with new firmware ? I recall the last sale was trying to clear older models

    • +1

these are current model. but all can be updates to latest firmware. new models are also on pre-order for November. LIFX+ with Infrared and LIFX Z LED Strips

    I bloody love this company!
Two of my bulbs were exhibiting a green tint instead of 9000K white light and they offered to replace both of them within 2 days of contacting them. Got the bulbs early on the next week. The defective bulbs were their old model and the ones they shipped out to me were the Color 1000 model. When I invest money in products especially in the smart home nature, it's a massive reassurance and satisfaction knowing that on the off chance I recieved a unit not working at 100%, the company will sort out an RMA without week long reviews and emails. This is what you'd call a reliable company filled with employees all having good intentions and care about their customers.

Thought I should share my experience. I've had to deal with more than the usual amount of returning some of my purchases, and every process takes a month or longer to get sorted, dealing with rude representatives and hearing excuses. It was the first time i was trully impressed with my experience contact support

    • -5

When I invest money in products especially in the smart home nature

What kind of returns are you getting on your investment? 100% loss?

Its not a reason to not advance ourselves in technology, we have to just learn from the mistakes and patch the problem so it doesnt happen again. Otherwise we'd still be using horse and carts

Also, 'bruteforcing telnet servers with a list of 62 horribly insecure default passwords, starting with the infamous admin:admin'. Technology isnt the problem its the people using it

      • -1

        Technology isnt the problem

"The device with the default admin credentials that you cannot change or disable isn't the problem guys it's your fault for talking about security"

It would be interesting to know if the new LIFXZ light strips can be extended with any RGB light strip…

    • I wouldn't bet your money on it, would be nice though. The 'With 8 uniquely addressable color zones per meter', makes me think this is more than your standard RGB strip

      • probably a unique connector to stop this exact thing.

    • +1

will ask the engineers for you

    • +3

No good. The control mechanisms are different as the LIFX Z has zone controls. E.g. you can made parts of the LED strip different colours

  • -8

20 dollars for 1 light? Loooooooooooooooooooooooooooool.

    • +4

But with an expected life of 23 years and all the other awesome features, i think it might be worth it.

  • Noooo and I bought 6 of the old version!

    • There's not a huge different between the old and new versions :-) I have several of the old ones and a couple of the new ones and can't tell any difference.

      • +2

Thanks for reassuring me guys. I look forward to turning on the red lights and starting a new brothel for Ozbargainers!

    • +1

Flying ace is right. The new ones are physically smaller and use less power but other than that they are very similar

      • +1

Yep spot on. Mix and match them. You shouldn't see any difference.

  • +1

Thanks, I've been waiting for a sale on the Colour 1000.

  • +2

I got 4 of these last week for $149 … I feel ahead of the bargain curve.

    • where did you purchase yours from? do you have a quote?

      • Got it from the lifx website using a random coupon code I found

  • +1

FYI the deal will be open till Oct 22nd.

We also have stock on route to Sydney so orders are likely to ship out early next week via Australia Post which will be quicker than HK Post.

    • What's the cost of postage if I ordered these from the USA to Aus in order to receive 10%? Would I be better off paying full price from a local store?

      • we ship from sydney for au orders. so free shipping. can't buy these models in store in au. harvey norman only stock LIFX Originals

  • Interested in getting some smart lights, but why are these so expensive compared to xiaomi? something i'm missing? is it just the connectivity to other apps/services?

    • +3

Unlike many other smart lights, these globes do not need a bridge and communicate directly with your wifi network so the initial investment is lower. If all you want is one globe thats all you need to buy.

Also, the amount of light these put out is massive compared to othesr eg White 800 = 890 lumens vs Xiaomi = 600 lumens. Also the colour version produce many more colours than you will ever achieve with a Hue for example

      • thanks, I didn't notice earlier.

The difference of Lumens is quite big with the Xiaomi, but so is the price, however, even 2 xiaomi are about the same price as this (they're AU$26 each at aliexpress) and it would be 1200 lumens rather than 1055.
Xiaomi are also wifi with no controller necessary. that being said, I'm not sure how far they're integrating with third party services.

        • +2

Xiaomi bulbs don't work with IFTTT 👎🏻

        • Xiaomi are great as they don't need any bridge either. However, they are dim (600 lumens), so unless you have 2 socket fittings, they won't be bright enough (mind you, an 890 lumen LIFX globe is also far too dim by itself). Benefit is that they are also just a fraction of the price. Personally, I prefer Xiaomi due to the price. They work flawlessly and integrate with the rest of their smart home items which are the cheapest on the market by far. Only downside is that they don't work with IFTTT which is not much of a big deal as they have their own internal IFTTT system with all their smart home devices. With light bulbs, the only IFTTT you're going to need is if motion/door sensor is set off, turn on lights etc. The benefit is that you can afford wireless click buttons, motion sensors, wireless power sockets, temp/humidity gauge etc. They are all about $8-15 each as opposed to $40-90 each.

If you don't care about dimming or fittings, you can buy a wireless power socket for $15 and connect it up to a light bulb socket/lamp and you can turn your $5 woolies/coles bulbs (1600 lumens) into smart ones.

        • +1

Any suggestions on buying motion sensors to work with IFTTT?

        • +1

@IndecentExposure: yeah, thats exactly what i was thinking.
I live in an old flat, and i replaced most fittings a few years back for double bulbs, so thats a non issue for me.. price is.

        • +1

@SevenSmurfs: I have the D-Link Motion Sensor and link it to an IFTTT command. http://www.dlink.com.au/home-solutions/dch-s150-mydlink-wi-f… I have to say the actual D-link app is terrible to understand and use but the unit itself works well.

When my little ones get up in the middle of the night, the senor trips and turns the lifx bulb on for 15 minutes then turns off.

      • +8

        Great summary :)

We also work closely with other connect device companies such as Google, Amazon, Logitech so are continuing to improve the bulbs with new integrations. We are working hard to make sure we future proof the bulbs as much as possible so that they are not obsolete after 12 months when new tech or standards come out.

We are also still based out of Melbourne and taking on the world :p

        • Wondering if you ever had contact with 'Neeo Inc'?

        • mate, can you confirm if these can be used in the bathroom?

@elcheapoinoz: yes, just can't cop direct water. steam etc.. is ok. I have had mine running in bathroom for over 2 years now

    oops, just bought one.

ps. can we get aprox aud in the title?

    • +1

I agree, I thought it was an OZb rule.

    • +2

      Sorry Guys. Sorted now

  • Anyone know how big the A19 bulbs are? Wondering if they would fit in the fan

      • thx mate, i looked at several different pages on there site, but didn't come across that one.

I did see on one of them them saying that you shouldn't install it in an enclosed area. or wet areas, I was thinking in my bedroom fan light, and the bathroom, both area's they say not to.. sigh.

        • I would say not enclosed because of the heat generated. Having said that it wont be any warmer than a normal globe, in-fact it would be a lot less;but the chips inside might not like being too warm. As for wet areas, for obvious reasons. Theres a lot more electronics in a lifx than a normal globe

  • +1

i bought the colour one last sale. bit of a novelty, get the white to save some cash. cool gadget tho.
can anyone recommend any hacky software (linux or/and windows) to use with this?

    • I like maxlifx. Bit tricky to use, but cool

    • Wouldn't the colour one still be brighter when set to white?

  • Thanks OP…just bought 3 more White 800. Good price
