i guess the Paleo fad is over

    • +1

you could use it as sunscreen perhaps…

  • Didn't see any actual product shots…… Much like "The Checkout" does for foods.
Because I gather it doesn't actually look like this http://www.cavemanfood.com.au/our-ingredients/

    • I think they are all pretty much stews. Not the prettiest products to photograph.

Shame to see another business go under…

I wonder if Dick Smith could buy it out?

    • +3

You mean Kogan? They purchased DS

  • Oh no, as in the man Dick Smith..or Koges… one or the other!

  • These seem pretty decent for camping. Hard to decide whether worth trying without any reviews though

edit - bit of an odd pricing structure too - wouldn't you normally give some sort of discount for buying more, rather than all the same price?

  • +1

Just trialled the postage option for a single mix box, free Australia Post to regional or metro SA. Went up to four, suddenly you get charged postage… guess who's going to be putting in separate singly orders?!
Meals are certainly $5 each, but it seems you can't buy just one (i.e., minimum two meals).

EDIT: Best before date is Jan 2017. Pretty short. '
EDIT: Two mix packs = free post and no option for express courier, three mix packs = still free aus post.

Decided to buy three mix packs, the short BBD means I'll just share em with some friends when we go camping. :)

    • There a 2 paxknf each favour, $10

      • Hence why I said, minimum two meals. You can't just spend $5, you have to spend at least $10.

        • Got two mixed boxes. Beats keeping a freezer full of frozen ready meals for last minute work call outs.
          $5 each pack seems OK.

    • Just received shipment email with tracking number.

  • Website down / getting a bit thrashed

  • not enough caveman in australia?

    • +1

Dying out, not enough women want to live in caves.

It's non-dairy and so am I (I am "vegan with meat" — no egg or dairy) so I'll give it a try and wish I'd heard about it before their going out of business sale.

    • -1

Doesn't that make you lacto-ovo? Not vegan?

      • No, actually, that is the REVERSE of what I am. I am "vegan + animal flesh" with no things that come OUT of animals like milks and eggs and honeys and poo (there is animal poo coffee, for example, and I won't drink that). Lacto-ovo is "vegan + things that come OUT of animals" with no animal flesh.

    Thanks OP.

Happy to try this out at this price. Full price just wasn't practical, but still a pity that this couldn't stay afloat. Macro ratio looks pretty good. Hope they taste okay.

  • +1

400g packs is not bad. $5 is a bargain delivered. Shame I never heard about them before, any feedback on which flavours are good?

    • +1

Grabbed 2 of the mix packs.
      (1 of each flavour.)

  • +2

Thanks OP, looks like meats back on the menu boys! For camping I probably would've bought at full price if I'd known about it before and the quality is as good as they claim it is. Shipping calculations seems a bit screwed up. managed to finally get free shipping by placing 2 separate orders.

  • Apart from the fact that these products are more expensive, even at half price, I don't understand the difference between this stuff and the stews (etc.) sold in cans at Coles/Woolies. IS there any difference? Canned stews have a very long use-by, and they are 400 mL. Methinks that's why they went under?

    • +3

? Not even sure if this is a joke post.

Caveman (apparently) use no crap fillers, preservatives, colours, thickeners, flavours etc, no added sugar. Just veg meat spices flavour etc. Completely different product to the canned gunk.

Pouch also handy as weight saving.

Ordered a few to try - if it tastes good I echo the sentiment above, would have been more than happy to buy at full price.

    • +2

The main difference is the meat is grass fed, free range and there are gluten free options. So some people with special diets or like to eat Paleo can eat this over other mass market brands.

      • +1

        meat is grass fed

Shouldn't the cattle have been brought down with bow and arrows and then clubbed, caveman style? 😉

        • Or just scavenge the meat ;-)

      • +1

And dairy free as well. Most canned stews in shops have milk products in the gravy.

  • pickup available in melbourne

  • Minimum $9.50 for shipping to QLD kills it for me. Only wanted to try 6.

    • +2

Wowser… looks like they weren't aware of the free shipping bug that I noticed earlier. :/ If they cancel my order I'm not gonna be happy. :(

      • Yeah, they no longer have that free shipping option.
Don't think I would have tried if shipping was extra.

      • +1

Well they're trying to get rid of stock to break even not lose money selling it.
Just pick it up if you're in Vic.

  • went and picked up mine..

    • Where is pickup even from?

      • Parkville off poplar road

    • Any chance of a review?

      • +1

Just saw the new Mel Gibson movie, Blood Father. It was a ripper, definitely recommend.

  • There's no Pick Up option anymore, even for Melbourne.

  • +2

Mine arrived today, haven't tried it yet, but I didn't realize cavemen had access to blenders! Ive seen chunkier stews in a can. This stuff is more like a soup.

    • +2

I look forward to consuming mine through a straw.

    • +2

It's so you don't have to deal with cutlery while you are doing cross fit….

    • Bugger. No wonder they had no repeat buyers.

Doesn't look like they'll get any this time round either.

      • Yeah, I tried the beef one today. It tasted really nice actually. Its just the lack of chunks thats a bit of a turn off.

  • Still waiting for delivery………. ???

  • Tried the pulled pork one today…

Initial impressions on squeezing it out into my bowl: Really? :/
After heating: OK at least it smells ok…
Whilst eating: thank god I brought bread, this would be completely unpalatable on its own
Hours later: burp Hmm spicy… that wasn't TOO bad.

Going to be trying the beef one today.

So far, I suppose $5 a meal is "ok", but if you're in the city, you'd probably rather spend that $5 on a pair of cold rolls.

    • They've closed down now so lucky for you - you didn't love it. I rarely expect these ready made meals to be any good but thought it would be good for climbers or people who camp a lot, like you said with a bit of bread its a quick meal.

      • Still closing down, from the looks of it…

Tried the beef one today, it was better than the bread so we'll chalk that one up to 'it was good'.
