    F3.5-5.6

    Dismal

    • Agreed it's a poor junky lens

Not fast but day light should be ok. How often do you use <2.8 in day light anyway? Depending on what you shoot. The could be enough for some one travel light.

As an amateur D3300 owner, can you suggest a better zoom lens than this? And can you explain why the f-numbers are bad? (same range as the 18-55mm kit lens my camera came with)

      • +3

i have one on my D5500 and am very happy with it …. thinking of getting one for my sons D3300. This range lets you do landscapes, portraits and some zooming to get up close. Sure is easier than changing lenses or taking several lenses when out an about.

Not sure what the macro functions are on this lens, will have to have a play.

it's a lot of lens for little money …. not sure if there are better options in this price range for this range of zoom.

Aperture is a trade off with physical lens size and cost.

The F stop numbers indicate how wide the lens can open to let light in. The more light it can let in, the faster your shutter speed can be (ie less camera shake/motion blur).. or perhaps less grain through use of lower iso.

The other huge advantage of a smaller F stop (wider opening lens) is the control of Depth of Field (DOF). It helps you isolate subjects and be more creative.

        • Somehow we're at a place where blurred background == creative. It can be a nice effect used properly but there are portrait photographers who spent their whole careers shooting with lots of depth of field. Check this out:

Extra control is always good. But you can do very well with a cheap "kit" lens and the definition of creative isn't "just like everyone else".

        • @syousef:

I'm going to assume you were running with the topic, rather than implying something I didn't say.

I currently shoot predominantly street with a 35mm equivalent F2.0. This doesn't allow for a shallow DOF.

I agree in general with what you say; however unless in perfect lighting conditions, kit lenses can be frustratingly limiting.

        • @Vampyr:

Not if you use flash. And I don't mean keep it on auto and wonder why your images all look flash blasted.

        • @syousef:

I wouldn't encourage anyone to use on-camera flash for anything other than happy snaps, unless they have an advanced knowledge of photography..

        • @Vampyr:

That's the aim. To advance your knowledge. And you don't do it by refusing to use the flash for anything other than happy snaps. If you know what you're doing even the popup flash on the camera can be an amazing tool.

There are millions of wildlife, event, wedding photographers etc. that work with on camera flash. They make their living with it, many limited to on camera.

And anyway who said you had to stick to on camera flash?

The first step is to turn it down a little and take advantage of today's cameras for their ISO ability. You don't need shiny skin. Next understand that you're dealing with 2 exposures when you use flash - the ambient light exposure and the flash exposure. Realize that flash has limited range and that only aperture affects flash power (unless you go above sync speed) and you're on the way to using your flash as a photographic tool instead of a happy snap accessory. Even better if you have an external flash that you can learn how bounce and trigger off camera.

      • Thanks folks. I'd prefer to stick with one lens for my travel photography, and of course without spending too much, so this lens seems appropriate for my needs. Happy to get creative without relying on DOF effects. I've read several times that using lenses with higher zoom ranges leads to lower image quality, but I'm not sure whether that means all photos taken will be at a reduced quality than the kit lens, or only those taken with the higher magnification.

        • This lens can be sold as a kit lens too actually.

But yeah usually the separate kit lenses (18-55 & 55-200) will have slightly higher image quality at their equivalent focal lengths.

    • This dismal lens will still produce nice images in bright light or with flash. It really depends on what you're trying to do. You can even have blurred out backgrounds if you get the subject near minimum focus distance and the background at infinity. Not as well as a "pro" lens that costs 6-10x as much of course.

    • Name another all purpose zoom lens that has a lower f stop range. That's right, none.

These are good for travelling as you don't have to inconvenience yourself with changing lenses.

  • This is shipped from Hong Kong though just to let people know.

  • i got one in their previous sale arrived in a week ….. its my current general purpose lens …… great range.

  • How did you figure that $290 -1.25% is $254?
    I get $286!!!

    • I think they used 12.5%, not 1.25%

Ignore the lens snobs on this forum who no doubt haven't even tried an all in one lens and realised that convenience sometimes trumps multiple lenses and can often get you a picture that is 99% as good as narrower focal range lenses. I've currently got 3 lenses but used to have the Nikon 18-200mm lens on my previous Nikon and it was awesome. By all accounts this is better. However it's probably only worth buying if you still only have the stock 18-55mm or don't have a lens yet as you've just bought a body.

  • Can anyone recommend a cheap body to go with this? Looking for a DSLR camera to take baby pic so I can create canvas prints. My mobile just won't do. Thanks.

  • I applied the code correctly but it still charged me the full amount. I contacted DickSmituAU on eBay but they haven't replied so far (48h+).

Has anyone else purchased it? (I purchased the 18-300, but same deal)

    • DISREGARD. It says full amount in ebay but correct amount in Paypal.
