I recently got a Lenovo yoga 10" for $320 at Officeworks.
iPad never an option due to lack of sd card support.

Speakers at front, inbuilt stand, pen support with conductive objects like paper clip, coin, metal pen, etc, were all points which won over equivalent Samsung 10". Battery life supposed to be the best also big point.

Then installed vlc for all videos/tv/movies, puffin web browser for flash supported web pages.

I occasionally do work stuff and got a tiny keyboard and mouse that fits in the carry case, as Android has Native Bluetooth support for them.

I have found the Lenovo yoga perfect for my needs.
I will suggest if a few others give their 2 cents, take all onboard, check them for yourself on web, head in store and demo them, make your mind up and buy.

I did that. Officeworks happy for you to plug things into them to ensure it works how you want.

Hope this is of some help.

iPad never an option due to lack of sd card support.

Not sure which one of OP's wife requirements would need a microSD card…

      • +2

Granted none I was simply trying to give an explanation as to why I chose an Android device. Thought this was a better approach as the majority of people I know with ipads have the lower storage units and complain about always having to delete stuff to add stuff. Plus I thought somoe additional info, even though not specified, may help in decision making process. Still better than saying just iPad, not giving model nor where to get one for about $300, wouldn't you agree?
I just figured some extra information is better than failing to answer the OP requirements with too little info.
Maybe the OP knows nothing about them and this could have been vital info!
Being new here should I not do that?

    • Flash runs AS EXPECTED with the Puffin browser? I had a Samsung Tab4 that I could never get flash to work on

      • Not 100% but for my use of the watching live tv streams I needed flash in browser.

    Something like this? http://www.harveynorman.com.au/computers-tablets/ipads-surfa…

    Only 1280x800 resolution though.

    Or this.

A bit over budget, but has very good battery life, a 1920x1200 screen, keyboard, and Windows.

I bought one of those Lenovo Tab 2's for a relo some months back and we're both very happy with it.

      • +2

Lenovo Tab 2 is really good for its price. The 10.1" is currently $216 at Officeworks.

        • Yes, looks like a great solution for a great price.
I got the smaller Tab 3 for the kids - very happy with it.

Edit: Oh, was looking at higher spec. model with higher res and more RAM - sours the deal a little!

      • Oops, silly me didn't look closely enough at the resolution.
The Lenovo I bought was in fact the A10-70 with 1920 x 1200 resolution, and priced about $300 if I recall.

    • +3

Can you tell me where to get a 10" iPad for $300?

      • -2

You can get a 9.7" around the ~$300 mark.
        It won't be brand new.
And it won't be the latest and greatest.

Something like the iPad Air (5th gen) with 32GB storage, from gumtree/ebay is not impossible.

        • +6

Ah ok. Although poster did not specify I was assuming they were looking at Brand New.
I still think iPad a poor choice due to requirements specified. New spend way too much for its use and 2nd hand little or no warranty!
Plus you comment re: better apps not right.

        • +2

          @dlf73:
We are talking about tablets here.

If you were to say for computing purposes, then I would agree that Android could get more stuff done.
And a tablet with Windows 10 is even more capable.

But both of those are quite poor when it comes to Apps.
About +80% of Apps on an Android tablet are phone apps blown up (and half of them have compatibility issues).
The Android UI is also no longer tablet friendly either, gone are the days of Android 4.0.3… Google is doubling-down on the phone business and introducing some changes for the sake of changes.

And things get even messier when moving to Windows 10… I don't even want to go into it.

          So in summary…
Windows 10 tablets = poor, but great for computing
Android tablets = passable tablet, passable computing
iPad = excellent tablet, not suited for serious computing

        • -2

@Kangal: maybe should have specified before, my comment about apps was specifically targeting one thing, name me an iOS app that can accurately pinpoint a wireless network devices to tenths of a meter!

        • +8

@Kangal: I have an ipad 2 as well which I bought for dumb media consumption but heck, I hate the restrictive file system in it, it's my f****ng ipad, I want to download stuff and do whatever I want with it, not what Apple wants me to do with it damn it! \rantover

        • @Kangal: >About +80% of Apps on an Android tablet are phone apps blown up

Exactly - Android cannot display a user interface that isn't designed for a phone. App developers cannot give the user a good experience on tablet because Google removed the Android tablet interface. They do not care about user experience on tablet.

        • +3

          @Kangal:

The point, however, is that when talking about web browsers, or media consumption, or email, as the OP was, the android apps are quite up to employing the screen properly and have more flexibility.

Indeed, the fact that it's not apple means you actually get a choice of browsers, or media playback apps, or streaming, or even email. Apple hate to allow you choice to stray outside their lucrative walled garden.

I could agree with your statement about google screwing the pooch on tablet apps in some areas, but not what the OP cares about.

To the OP, I think I might look at the chinese tablets, and in particular the Chuwi Hi12, which offers both Android AND Windows capability in one unit (that has the Surface Pro hi res screen) and a tolerable price. Obviously at your price point you aren't going to get the last work in style, but you should be able to find something up to your task.

        • +1

          @dlf73:
Poster did not specify if the:
          1) tablet had to be New/Used
          2) required warranty
          3) only specified that it had to be of good quality and have a decent browser… requirements the iPad meets.

iPad has better Apps than Android or Windows 10.
It is NOT debatable, it simply is the truth.
          Why?
I'm talking about a tablet here…something directed for media consumption, not a workhorse.
If you are arguing Windows is better because of X, then I would say you're still wrong and say Linux is better.
But again, the topic is about tablets and a tablet experience… which is why the iPad excels.

So you want an iOS App that can pinpoint Wifi strength to a great accuracy?
…but you are not the OP, and the OP never wanted such a thing, so why would you even bring this point up???
There are iPhone apps, and actually iPad Apps that can give you Wifi strength.
However, they do this by measuring the Wifi's strength using performance/pings.
Any distance related results would be guesses at best.
The Settings does show the actual strength of the wifi signal, but not distance.
You can try AirPort Utility, or Wifi Sweetspots, or other related Apps.

        • +1

@Diji1: "Android cannot display a user interface that isn't designed for a phone"

Do you mean "touch screen"? It is a tablet requirement we are discussing, to "browse the web, open i-view, and read a few e-mails". I have never ever had a problem doing that on either a phone or a tablet, and the addition of a bluetooth or OTG keyboard has always allowed me to use my Nexus 10 as as good a 'computer' as Apple are now belatedly trying to position their media consumption device as, only with a superior screen and a far wider choice of community assessed applications.

        • @Kangal: your original post failed to answer the OP question re: $300 as you did not specify New or second hand. Based on OP you were recommending a 2nd hand unit to meet their requirements of $300 Mark. Good chance no warranty so how is support 2nd to none comment any use when device is out of warranty? You should have specified that in your original post. Also the apps much better comment, again standard apps on any tablet will tick the boxes for OP requirements, again missing the mark. But the biggest problem is you stated only one tablet is worth considering. Granted you obviously had good use from your iPad but based on OP their have to be more than 30 tablets meeting the needs as specified by the OP. Also OP did not specify decent browser, they said decent resolution. Therefore any saying only one tablet can do what the OP requires is not offering transparent advice.

        • -1

Not impossible but highly unlikely. Just did a search and you must have been using searches in US dollars or GB pounds. What you have suggested their is nothing under $679.

        • @dlf73:
Curious as to which app is this on Android?

        • @Rorschach: WiFi analyser. Brilliant…..

        • @dlf73:
Lol, just realised I have it installed, haven't gotten around to playing around with it.

        • @Rorschach: doh. So simple and accurate.

        • @dlf73:
dlf73… can you please explain to everyone here what Wifi Analyser has to do with paulf's requirements??

This is not helping the OP in anyway.
It's only helping you make biased arguments.

        • @dlf73:
dlf73… I don't know why you're coming off as a fanboy, but just stop it.

I did not specify New or Used, because the OP did NOT specify either.
So it was a valid recommendation.

          No warranty?
Well, this is OzBargain afterall and most consumers don't care about warranty, if the scale of grey imports is to be a representation of anything to go by.

I didn't get a good use from my iPad.
I don't own one. I bought the iPad 2 on launch day as a present for a young sibling.
It's been a good service to him and family, and even whilst "obsolete" it still can bring life back as a car's entertainment console… so it was money well spent.

OP said and I quote "she wants to browse the web, look at emails, watch ABC iView".
You wouldn't want that browsing experience with a slow dualcore Intel Atom and Windows 7.
Nor would you want it with an old/slow Android tablet like the Moto Xoom.
It is a point worth mentioning, as it caters to the OP's wishes.

"No gaming, no office type requirement"
That would mean iOS gaming prowess isn't necessary.
Nor is Windows 10's computing prowess is necessary.
…so this is a shoe-in for Android tablets, right?
Wrong. Having these options doesn't take away from the product.
So an iPad or Windows 10 tablet is just as plausible to recommend.

So with all three ecosystems up to choose from, which is best?
The iPad is better tablet by far, but the most expensive.
The Windows 10 are clunkiest, but can run .exe the others cannot.
The Android tablets are acceptable, but are not master of anything.
…so after careful consideration, I thought an iPad Air is the best choice.

Sure it might not have the new box smell.
Or a warranty that most never claim.
It might be limited in some capabilities, and capacity.
But it has a solid hardware.
          Fulfils the OP's requirements.
Has the best software and accessory support (which the OP will more likely need).
And will continue to work like a horse for some years to come (unlike the cheap Win10 tablets, or Android tablets that are forgotten as soon as you buy them).
It really is, a solid option which the OP should consider.

Did you even care to read the OP, or wonder if my suggestions had merit??

        • -1

          @Kangal:

2010 called - they want their tablet apps for android review back… Utter bollocks. they were NEVER stretched apps like when you run an iphone app on the ipad (Like my wife STILL has to do for a FlickR app on her ipad…). They were automatically retargeted (yes sometimes clumsily and poorly but not stretched).

Half have compatibility issues? i have yet to find a SINGLE app I cant run on my Samsung S2 tablet…

Anyway - i am sure i am not going to change your mind so maybe i am wasting my time :)

I agree he was somewhat being a fanboy but do you honestly believe this comment:

And will continue to work like a horse for some years to come (unlike the cheap Win10 tablets, or Android tablets that are forgotten as soon as you buy them).

Doesn't make you sound like a total fanboy???

          Glass houses, stones, etc.

        • +1

          @slewis69au:

Sorry if you didn't comprehend, but I don't mean "stretched out" phone Apps.
That used to be a problem with Android running (small) phone Apps in larger phones, and for iPads running iPhone Apps.
Android has mitigated these issues ages ago…for phones.
However, if you use an Android tablet you realise phone apps are "dynamically scale" to the screen. It still means the apps do get blown up slightly, and a lot of space is just wasted blank space. It doesn't cater to tablets at all. And the worst part is that this is an all too common practice, simply because developers are lazy and that Google doesn't care enough to cater to/raise the quality of apps in its App Store.

iOS however is a bit of a mixed bag.
There are some phone Apps you outright cannot install for iPads, and there are some iOS Apps that are iPhone Apps that "dynamically scale" for the iPad.
But by far, the most common App for iPad are Apps that are specifically made and targeted for iPads.
It just makes the entire experience much better.
On top of this, the "theme" of Apps is very consistent on the iPad.
There are only TWO UI styles for iPad Apps:
          - New iOS 7's half-flat visual style… and its very common (+95%).
          - Classic iOS Skeumorphic visual style… on some old/not-updated Apps (<5%).
          - Okay, maybe a third UI style and that is with 3D Touch

Okay, I was exaggerating (slightly) when I said half have compatibility issues.
For instance, when Pokemon Go came out…. there was mountains of enquiries
(can my phone run it? My phone is a new flagship, why can't it run it? I'm upgrading for PoGo, what phone should I get).
Even Google Play tells you half the time "your device may not be supported" before downloading.
And that's just on phones… move onto tablets and yeah, things can get frustrating.

He is a fanboy. I am not because I'm approaching this objectively.
I don't work for Apple, nor do I think they're the best.
I actually don't recommend tablets at all.
I'm into Android phablets and Windows laptops.
However… if you are getting a tablet, then at least I have the "courage" to say, okay the iPad is the best.
          And "literally" the only option.
          Why?
The Windows 10 tablet I recommend is $3,000 (MS Surface Book).
Google has stopped caring about Android tablets back with ICS 4.0.3
The RIM PlayBook was awesome, but killed long ago.
The HP TouchPad was quite crappy, and killed long ago.
Other options like Ubuntu Touch etc etc are just no-good.

I get why you could think I'm a fanboy, but as my other posts show: the iPad is the best overall tablet out there.
Other tablets are just worse overall, they might be better in one way or another, but overall they come short.
          That is my objective view.

My subjective view would be to tell you to flip the bird at Apple and not get an iPad.
And instead stick with your Windows 10 laptop and Android phablet.
I would never recommend a bad product despite which logo it has be it the ExoPC, or Grid10 tablet, the JooJoo!!

        • @Kangal: I don't understand Fanboy and apologise if getting g off subject, etc. However you failed to give substance in you initial post. You said iPad but failed to specify which model and from where, that would cost them around $300. I am sorry but did you read the post? Only when I asked did you specify eBay. But doing a search this is just not accurate. There is nothing Close to $300. So the OP has little chance of getting what you suggested. iPads are great and yes they are always an option, which you do have merit, but not when you meet the requirements as soe ified by the OP.

        • @Kangal: yes iPads are the best I have never said they are not. But OP wanted something in $300 Price range. Help them by recommending them something in this range, not something 2-3 times the price because they are the best. Hardly objective. Fanboy you are.i looked it up.

        • @Kangal: you said Apple has better apps. In relation to OP requirements that has no merit. I mentioned it only to say that for sone people play store may be better and gave an example to prove this. Seems we both were off OO subject.

        • +2

          @Kangal:
You've explained yourself but i respectfully disagree - old ipad's in my (albeit limited) experience give a poor experience - you have two choices, #1 - install latest versions of iOS and suffer from poor performance, battery life, etc (funnily enough the things people accuse android of having!) #2 - keep the old iOS and be insecure and have no updates to your apps (once again the comparisons are eerie!)

I think you're overthinking this - the things they asked to do can be perfectly satisfied by an Android Tablet a Windows Tablet or an iPAD but the only thing in their price range is the first two.

Now setting all that to one side your points are interesting but once again i disagree.

I have to give technical support to family members with iOS devices (tablets and phones) and trust me they don't "just work" and are a long way from "intuitive" or else i wouldn't be getting so many phone calls!

I use an android tablet for work and play every day - i hardly ever come across apps with the "blown up" issue you describe and why you are didactically explaining it to me is weird - i am the guy who uses them! I comprehend perfectly and how it can happen, are you suggesting there are no lazy developer issues in iOS apps? If you are objective you would realize that's ridiculous.

Yep some brand new games and features don't work on some Android devices… But you're ignoring that the "same iOS" argument from Apple is equally bullshit - read the stories out there complaining about iOS upgrades, battery issues, performance issues, etc on old hardware - Siri is a great example, only worked on the newest hardware so the OS isn't really the same is it? The whole fragmentation argument is also ridiculous - i suppose you regard the PC and MAC market as fragmented, is it a fault of the PC and the MAC that every PC and MAC application doesn't work on every variant of the hardware? Lastly i have NEVER had an app not work that google play said would work on my device, maybe i have been lucky.

I don't care about specific OS features for tablets, or if some people think google has "given up" on tablets. I could make a comment about the iPad pro showing that Apple has given up and made a poor copy of the surface but where's the relevance?

I am happy with the tablet experience and capability i have had in my last 3 Android tablets - happy enough to hand back a free iPad mini to my employer and get them to partially fund a Samsung Galaxy S2 instead. But i am a tinkerer, i have found the launcher and apps that work perfectly for what i need. I found the iPAD frustrating, limited and hard to use, the settings menu needs a complete re-design and is an unmitigated bloated mess - some settings for apps are there, some are in the apps, there are plenty of examples of software rot in iOS. Maybe i would be more willing to ignore them if it was the OS I used first but it isn't and i won't.

Not because i am a fanboy either but because Android on the devices i use it on gives me the best integrated experience, because i can get all my apps on my tablet without buying them again, because i can buy humble bundles if i want to. The reasons are many and varied why it's the best experience FOR ME.

But first and foremost it would be just fine for what the OP is asking for - do you think the OP cares about ANY of the things we are arguing back and forth about? At least have the courage to admit you've gone off on a pointless tangent nobody will read because your original post has been downvoted too far… ;)

        • @Kangal: My nexus 10 was released in November 2012. I am still getting good use out of it every day. Admittedly, I didn't buy it until Jan, 2014, and missed any earlier problems with a dearth of appropriate apps, but have had no problems with anything from the android store I have wished to run on it, from mail, browses and media to fully fledged office programs using a Google keyboard and OTG logitech trackpad.

You appear to have a dog in this fight. The O.P. is after an inexpensive quality screen new tablet.
As Meatloaf's minders might write for him, one out of three is bad.

        • @Kangal: "But both of those are quite poor when it comes to Apps."
What more do you need then a browser ( of your choice ) and MX Player. VLC player? ok.
If you are not afraid, Android offers tTorrent and Torrential.
          Also email clients are abundant.
So I guess I've covered all with Android.

        • @enzioFirenze: Stuff like what?

        • @gokhanh: not sure their exact issue but I hate when syncing tv shows in iTunes have to go into properties name shows titles, series, episodes etc for them to display properly and to play in right order. Android just copy folder and done, no additional messing around.

I have both an iPad Pro 9.7 and a samsung S2.
Both are great but the samsung feels better overall - seems faster, feels better to hold, software OS works better for me.
Both are probably way over priced, especially the ipad pro.

we also have an old original ipad, apple dropped support for them really quickly.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 is the only premium Android tablet worth considering, but it will cost you more than $300 brand new. If you really want something cheaper, the the Lenovo Tablets are also very highly spoken of.

    • -1

only premium Android tablet worth considering

No it isn't, only a fool would only consider one tablet. Particuarly a Samsung tablet given their inflated prices and lack of corresponding increase in performance or quality.

Also any Android tablet is awful because Google literally could not give a shit about a good user experience on tablets. They demonstrated this when they removed the tablet interface in Android in version 4 aka Kit Kat. Therefore almost every Android app is terrible on a tablet other than full screen applications such as games or media players because they use an interface designed for a phone.

      http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/09/one-year-later-can-an…

      • Hence why I suggested the Samsung tablet. Samsung has optimised some UI elements of touchwiz so that they are better suited towards a tablet.

There are apps that support tablet mode, sure it might not be as good as the Apple ecosystem, but popular apps like Facebook have tablet mode. Microsoft also offer their Office apps, which do have tablet mode. Most Google apps also have tablet mode. Most people buy tablets for content consumption, and therefore wouldn't always be dealing with scaled apps.

Can you suggest any other latest generation premium Android Tablet, with good reviews?

      • +2

Man there is a lot of crap being spouted here - wow for things that are all universally terrible they sure seem to sell a few of them and have lots of companies making them.

There are plenty of launchers and apps that have a great tablet experience, this is simply Apple Fanboi FUD.

  • watch ABC Iview.

Unfortunately unless things have significantly changed the Android iView app is atrocious and by that I mean toss a coin on whether it runs without crashing on your device.

Such an app would not get onto the Apple app store.

Having never used iView app I installed and used for past 30 mins and did not fail once when skipping constantly back and forward, etc.

    • +1

things must have changed the past few years as using iview on my sony phone the last 2 years and the samsung s2 this year I have never found that problem sorry.

Can I also say I have not met anybody who has been happy with limited storage in Apple devices, phone or tab. A simple sd card slot for an extra 64-200gb storage is by itself a big factor.

    • +2

I have an iphone 32 go & iPad 128gb. Never felt that storage is limited. Since I have a good internet I usually stream music or video. The built in storage is good enough for apps that I use.

      • -1

Yeah 128gb ok but 32gb touch and go. I must live in a weird circle because everyone complains about deleting stuff on a regular basis. that is those with small storage ipads. that's why I swapped for an Android of late. If they just had an sd card slot then Price would be the only negative point. I would look at an iPad in future if come with sd card slot. Then again if you don't have a lot of watching stuff and just use storage for photos and app use then fine.

Both my husband and I are oldies. We have both got a samsung tab a 9 inch. Have had them for over 12 months. Are used at least 5 hours a day. Great battery life, never had a problem. Super quick loading. Would highly recommend. All you technophobes often over think. For basic web browsing this is all you need

    • +6

Hello there old lady. I think you mean technophiles, not technophobes.

    • My folks love their Galaxy Tab A 8" for the Facebookin' and web surfs. Only thing is now they want something a bit bigger. On the bright side, it solves presents for two years in a row :P

  • Go for ipad.

    • +1

      Which model?

      • +1

iPad Maxi 4. Rumoured to be size 15". And have detachable keyboard. But no USB or Headphones connections. Of course no microSD card.
        Prices: 32GB $1200, 64GB $1500, 128GB $1900, 256GB $2500

        • MaxiPad?
No ports to make it blue-liquid-resistant?

        • -1

Hardly fits OP needs of about $300 now does it?

  • This deal ends tomorrow. Sure spec isnt that great, but worth to try for light usage

    Chuwi Hi10: http://www.banggood.com/Chuwi-Hi10-64GB-Cherry-Trail-Z8300-Q…

10in, IPS, HD (1920x1200 pixels) screen, coupled with a sharp AUD$250 price. I use one for my travels and get about 3-4 hours of playtime on it (games/movies). Performance cannot be faulted either for these purposes. There is a 12in version (Chuwi Hi12) that costs about $100 extra and has metal (more durable/luxurious?) build.

Its mono speakers at the back is so-so though. I pair the Hi10 with BT speakers or wired headphones so that's not an issue for me.

    • I have the Hi12 and it works well except I find the WiFi strength not so good, and (rarely) it will power off/give me trouble powering on.
Build quality is very good IMHO for the main unit, the optional keyboard is another story - a big let down.

I would stay clear of Chuwi tablets. I bought the Hi8 about 8 Months ago for my daughter and after 1 Months it died. Somehow the bootloader decided to die and although I spent lots of time trying to re-flash Android, I wasn't able to revive it. Many other people on their forums reported a similar issue and support from Chuwi was hardly there.
Maybe I just got unlucky, but never any china tablets again for me :/

I would suggest the RemixOS version instead but yeah, not bad for the $$.

    • +1

What about Ainol. Will work fine for the wife I suppose.
Surprised no one suggested that yet, ignoring all the puns they were getting in the past.

  • Dont go windows tablets as it has the same peoblems like all windows OSs just on a smaller footprint.

    • Any OS has it's problems. Still, agree it would be overkill in this case - Android will work fine for OP's purposes.

      • +2

For simple and reliable use id go android or ios. For simplicity id go ios.

Windows tablets id only sudgest for the people that want pain and suffering…. its like marriage.

        • I would say that the Surface tablet is a very capable device that has received amasing reviews, though you are better off using it with a keyboard.

For the OP's usage, I would go with an Android tablet…

        • @Dennis3003: for simplicity id not go a surface.

  • +2

Does she really need 10 - 12 inches? I would have thought 8 inches would be enough for most purposes?

    • TBH, the length doesn't matter, it's what you do with it… and also girth.

I mean for movie watching, you don't want to lug around a tablet that's as thick as the yellow pages would you? What were you thinking?

  • You'll probably get a Nexus 10 for pretty cheap. That's what my mum uses. I'm not sure how available these are nowadays?

    • They are four years old - and if other owners are like me, you can have it when you prize it from my dead cold fingers. It uses ~ 2% of battery a week in standby and specs that Samsung haven't really improved on in most of their tablets since - and in the case of the "A" series of tabs, fallen a long way backwards from.
If you see one, grab it.
