  • Wonder if its auto, manual or both

    • If you cant drive a manual then you wont have any fun nor learn anything at this event.

      • I assumed it would be, but havnt been to one b4, so wasnt sure..

      • Not quite true - there'd probably be some DSGs among those cars

  • would be both. bad times tho (no sat or sun :( )

  • Thanks, that is awesome! Booked.

Wonder if the new driver course is free also?

  • Yeah too bad it's on weekdays, I'm taking the morning off to go.
I went to the Mazda Performance Drive Day a while back and four of the cars were manual and one auto so you could feel the difference.
Should be good either way :)

    • How do you get into a Mazda Drive Day? I would prefer to do this in a Mazda as I prefer to drive rear wheel drive cars and at least Mazda has the MX-5 and the RX-8…

      • I received an email to sign up a while back when they were launching the MPS3. It was before I knew of this site.. otherwise I would've shared :( sorry!
        They provided the RX8, MX5 (man/auto), MPS3 and MPS6.
They had Dick Johnson doing hot laps in the MPS3 on the day too!

Anyway, can't wait to get my hands on the new Golf R at this one.

      • I participated in a Mazda Driving Day in 2006. It was a competition that I was entered into from Mazda - where I'd purchased and serviced the car at the same dealer.

  • do they supply the car? or we need to bring our own car?

    • They supply the cars.

Vehicles used: Golf, Golf Wagon, Golf R, Golf GTD, Golf GTI, Jetta, Tiguan & Passat CC

  • Melbourne filling up quickly now

  • THIS IS UNBELIEVALBLE!!

  • Melbourne all full

  • Ah, melbourne full. Spent too much time umming and ahhing about taking the day off work for it.
Oh well, but great freebie anyway. + from me.

  • Good Post, I am however worried that after the course they will spam me to buy a golf car or something, you have to give them all of your details, I have seen this before and even if you tell them you do not want to buy a car they still keep calling. Could be risky???

    • just tell them you already bought a VW after the course cos you liked them so much… that should keep em quiet.

Also ask if they would be kind enough to send you some merchandise like a free tshirt/hat/etc so you can wear them about while driving you (imaginary) VW ;)

      • Great point, Might give that a go, still some spots left for Brisbane, also make sure you book it so that it goes over the lunch period. e.g 10am, you a much likely going to get a better feed then just some biscuits and coffee for morning/afternoon tea.

        • +2

Great point. Signed up - woohoo!

          • @roddo: It seems too many people took my advise, the 10am for the Friday is gone, dame it, looks like I have to have some biscuits and coffee for morning/afternoon tea.

            • @mgguinne: That's not good - why didn't you sign up when you posted ur idea?

  • dammit. Melbournes full :(

  • too many lousy drivers in melbourne (really too many and I have to shake my head all the time), hopefully they will improve with this :)

  • SA missed out again :(

  • bo ya

signed up :D my gf and friend coming with me too

  • Damn! You've gotta be quick!

  • Nice! Just snapped one up, I have an 04 Saab 9-3 Aero and I was thinking of going VW anyways. Would be nice to see if we could touch the Golf R =]

  • Outstanding freebie. Just make sure you read the fine print on the Licence Requirements!

    • What fine print?

      • +1

"must be over 21 years of age, must hold a full Australian drivers license and have held that license for more than 3 years."

Mainly the more than 3 years full license bit (usually full license starts AFTER you have completed P's, eg if you got P's at 20, two years (WA) until completion of P's you can't do this course until your 22 (example only). Its not from when you first get your license/P's.

  • Wow, what awesome cars you get to drive- shame I missed out, Sandown is so popular.

Also, I couldn't find anywhere where it actually says that it's free.

    • "Cost:
No payment is required in connection with your participation in the course(s). "
As read in the terms and conditions

  • Shame I don't meet the licence nor age requirement. :(

  • Dang! Missed out on the Advanced Drivers course in Sydney

I've been to the BMW one and it's quite fun, especially the skidpan :)

Great deal for those who booked though

  • All booked out!!!! :'(

  • Just booked me and the wife in for her birthday for Brisbane on the 24th @ 10am - woohoo !!!

PS she said I would have to take her for lunch - I wonder if she'd accept the freebie sandwiches hehehe!

  • Dam not over 21 =[ Guess beginners is better than nothing :D

  • Vehicles used: Polo & Golf lol that car only used >.<

  • Does 3 Years for the advanced course count from the time you get your licence?

Or does it start from when you get off P's?

BTW, I'm In WA (P's are for 2 years).

    • The wording does create some confusion regarding this..

    • -1

As I said above, the wording would assume after you get off your P's, as your full license does not start until then.

      • So i got an official response in regard to this, "Your provisional licence period is included in the 3 years required in order to attend our driver training." So the 3 years starts when you initally get your probation licence

  • I LOVE YOU
    very excited,

booked the 1215 session of advanced driving with 2 mates just then.
    Cheers.

  • … if only in South Australia.

I'd be on it like hotcakes!! Golf R & Golf GTi

  • Missed out in Brissie. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh FORK!

  • Awesome freebie, Ive booked my spot in Brisbane.

    • When did you book?

      • Booked a fair while before I posted that message :)

  • -2

Can someone please cancel their bookings in Sydney so I can book myself in? I am DYING to get in!! =p

  • When the "bargain" was put up, was Sydney still open? ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

    • i got my sydney booking in 2 days ago :) this deal came way too late for syd/melb people - by the end of saturday i think most of syd was gone.

      • +1

How did you find out about it?

      • +1

Guess you forgot to share it.

    • Nah when I posted it, Sydney was already completely full. I didn't bother putting Sydney in to the title for that reason.

  • It's all full now, a couple of places left in the new drivers for Perth and Brisbane.

  • Get ready for the sales pitch!

    • I'm prepared for the sales pitch, and really do expect it considering there is no cost.

I think it will be tame compared to the push sales you get in Thailand, or from Modern Roofing!

      • Or fitness first…

  • Aw! Dammit. Sounded like fun. :p
    Meh. Good find though!

  • yep advanced one all gone, damn it!!
Hope they bring this offer back soon, or put on extra events.

  • -1

Anyone know if i can go and just enjoy the provided refreshments? I dont really want to do any more driving (bus driver by trade)

    • lol, dont think so as it states you have to present a printed email to get in

  • I was going to sign up for Brisbane, until I saw the location "Norwell". I thought "Where the heck is Norwell?" - then looked it up and found out it's about 50km out from Brisbane. It's probably more accurate to say the course location for Brisbane is in outer Northern Gold Coast rather than Brissy. Bit too far for me I think, ah well.

  • +1

Actually, where does it say this course is free? All I see is a booking facility. It doesn't have a price stated but I don't think that automatically means it's free.

Edit: The guys on this site http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f40/vw-driver-training-44876… seem to think you have to pay for the course. Also the course's own webpage had earlier stated "Current Volkswagen owners are also offered a special rate" (google that phrase to see what I mean) - but strangely that statement has been removed. So this could mean VW is having trouble filling spots and therefore giving out freebies to fill up unused spaces - but it might also mean it's actually a fee paying course. Hm..

    • +1

Instead of doing all that research.. just read the terms and conditions,
"Cost: No payment is required in connection with your participation in the course(s)."

By the people on that forum referring to "Current Volkswagen owners are also offered a special rate. " Pretty sure they are talking about the cost of buying one.

      • OK, thanks. As I said I didn't sign up so never got to read terms and conditions. So, false alarm. Just thought it was worth checking from my persepctive.

  • wonder how often they have these free courses..i missed out on the advanced one

  • I tried to get myself on the waiting list.

Anyone else know if they got onto the waiting list?

    • i tried, got a reply that a waiting list does not exist…

      :(

      sigh

  • +1

It's funny how available slots are appearing for Sydney when the course is for tomorrow. All these people who booked without committing to it and now canceling within 8hrs. Slack.

  • How was this ?

I'm going on Thursday and want to know what to expect.

    • +2

For those doing Brisbane there's 7km multi lap course; and 2 lap skid pan multi khana and forward and back witches hat slalom. Also there was a demo of Park Assist - no hands parallel parking. Lastly there was 2 hot laps where the race drivers drove you around at max speed.

If you could use GPS tracking that'd be great so we can compare statistics (max speed, average speed etc). For blackberry there is free GPSlogger although only has 1 second resolution. I had a max speed of ~75km.

All in all a great afternoon!

      • Awesome!

      • Awesome sounds promosing!!
Hopefully we can go around Sandown in Melbourne.
I'll be running RaceChrono (www.racechrono.com) if anyone else is going and wants to datalog.

  • There is an open slot in Brisbane for 10am this Friday… a colleague just cancelled.

    • Thanks but gone :(

Also what to expect and how much is this course normally? I've done an advanced driving course before for half day.

  • +2

Went on Friday.. was a pretty good 3 hours. Did all the things Brisdaz reported, was fun to blat around the track in a golf gti.

Got a little goodies bag at the end with a cap, umbrella, drink bottle, vw magazine, and vw bag. And the best thing, not even one sales pitch to buy something.. someone asked how much a golf R is, and they were told to check out the website.

    Good stuff VW :)

  • Went to the Perth event this morning and it was excellent. Similar format to everyone else's report.
    Well done VW. Great day!
