    Buy a $1000+ phone and protect it with a glorified ziplock bag. You can if you want. For me? No way. Won't neg though.

    • I don't like to cover my phone permanently with the bulky case, that restricts you to use your phone properly, I dropped my phone in the water when I went to hot-spring. I don't go to beach everyday.

      it's your personal preference, don't like it, don't buy it

        It's not that I want to use a bulky case intead. It's that I don't believe this will work. Even properly sealed undewater cameras don't last long before they leak. This has no hope. And yep I commented but didn't neg and no way will I buy.

          I don't believe this will work.

          It's a plastic bag. Proven again and again to work.

          @Diji1:

          Once submerged I believe it will leak. I doubt it will just float to the top and keep your phone safe.

          Lots of underwater photographers would beg to differ..

          Its all to do with the quality of case and sealing. And most importantly how well maintained it is..

          If you use it as a daily driver with all the accompanying bumps and bruises.. don't expect it to survive in the pool.

        • @Thrawn:

          I guarantee you that underwater photgraphers don't use a $1 bag from Zapals. Decent underwater cases run 4 figures.

        • +1

          @syousef:

          I didn't say $1 bags. And you said properly sealed underwater camera.

          Certainly don't need 4-figure cases either… I've taken my $150 case (APS-C camera) down for at least 50 dives with no leaks.

          The manufacturing cost of a working plastic bag waterproof smartphone case can probably be done for under $1. The problem though is that it'll be fragile and the seals are likely to degrade unpredictably very easily. It'll be like playing reverse lottery.

          Generally speaking its not a good idea to put a smartphone in water on purpose.

          @Thrawn:

          Please show me a reliable $150 camera for an APS-C DSLR. I'm seriously interested.

          Last time I bought an underwater case it was around $300 on special for an Olympus C-750 superzoom some time around 2003-2004. I bought a Fuji underwater camera for my wife and it leaked in under a year. I have since purchased cheap underwater cameras that were on clearance and I treat them as splashproof for the most part.

          Regardless these bags are little more than glorified sandwich bags. You bet they're fragile and seals will degrade and perhaps even the seams will split. If you want to risk your phone in one, that's your decision and it's your phone. I wouldn't risk a $50 phone on that never mind one that hosts a good camera.

        • @syousef:
          Look up the Meikon cases. $150 - $200 range on eBay. Sony NEX, Micro 4/3, etc.

          And as I said before.. you need to do proper maintenance to minimize the leak risk (no different from the uber expensive cases). And the reason why those simple type underwater cameras don't last is because they are not user servicable. So you can't inspect and replace the seals, lube the o-rings, etc

        • @Thrawn:

          Thanks for that. Had a brief look. I shoot Nikon and Canon DSLRs and have owned point and shoots from a variety of manufacturers but I but haven't delved into Sony.

          I see Meikon has a 40m to suit D7200. I'd love that but at around $600 I can't justify it. That's a lot better than the cases that use to run >$2 back in the day though (taking you at your word for how reliable they can be).

    You'll be lucky to get a handful use out of these before the plastic on the sides start tearing away, from my experience anyhow.

  • based on all the concerns above…what would be a safer way to achieve the same??

    • Buy an underwater point and shoot when they come on sale. Don't expect it to last either. It all depends on how long the seals last before they start to give. They only need to give way a tiny bit.

      Underwater photography done right costs quite a bit of money still.

    • leave the phone beside the pool rather than in it

    • I mainly was gonna use these sort of "ziplock bags" for in the shower…so i can play/control my radio/music. (ie. simple prev/next control on a waterproof speaker wont do it for me)…

      • Waterproof bluetooth speaker with buttons? Your phone could be in the next room.

        Voice activated player?

  • I can see a use for this. With the Note 7 that is waterproof anyway you can use it to take photos and videos underwater. Now those who have a note 7 will know that when water hits the screen it makes it go funny so having the case will prevent screen going crazy so you can take photos and videos.

    • then u'd need to buy a fire-proof safe to place the phone in too ;)

  • Where's the real free freebies……haven't had any of those from Zapals for a while now

  • Does the touchscreen work whilst in the bag?

    • Yes it does. I used one of these when I was last in Thailand doing para-sailing, jet-ski, banana boat etc, and it worked really well. Except all my recordings came out upside down because I put the phone in the wrong way. Duh !!
      Word of advice though, if you plan to do fully submerge your expensive phone using this, do a test run without phone first ;)

    • From my experience with an ordinary zip-lock bag it works fine, just like a loose screen protector.

  • i used to put my phone using a glad wrap sandwich plastic that comes with a quick simple zip lock… no problem

    • +1

      +1 Glad have a complete range of smartphone covers, I had to go to the larger bags for the Galaxy3 to N4, make sure you get BPA free.

      • +1

        +1 on the BPA free tip - trust me i would never do it again…

  • Cheapest freight is $1.62 with Hong Kon post……
    Who the hell pays $60 for the more expensive shipping
    Or $117.93 for 2 of them……

    Ok, it's log in for 0.85, but are those freight prices for real
