Want a Job in Human Resources

Hi,

As the subject suggests, I'm interested in getting a job in Human Resources but I'm going through a bit of a crisis where I cant get my foot in the door for that industry. My background for the past 13-14 years has been in customer service, having mostly worked in the hospitality, retail, banking and education industries. I've had experience as an Assistant Manager for about 5 years worth while working for a fuel retail outlet which also had a cafe and a car-wash, managing the business and delegating about 15 staff members.

I've got a degree in Business Management (with majors in HR and Marketing) from an Australian University - its not Monash, Melbourne Uni or RMIT, but it IS a recognized university in Victoria.

I've spent the past 10 - 15 years trying through SEEK, contacting recruiters and employers in trying to get any kind of role within that industry but have obviously not gotten any positive responses.

I'm happy to start at any level as long as it is in HR. I've always been drawn to HR and pretty much everyone including my former lecturers have suggested as succh, that is the industry where I can excel. Even the personality tests suggested as much without any input from me about career interests - in fact I took those tests to find out if there is something else that I'm meant to do.

I'm asking for advice, maybe even asking for anyone in the HR industry who reads this to perhaps even offer me a role in HR. I'm happy to even do something like an unpaid internship for a few months just to prove myself.

If there is anyone who can assist me, please PM me and I'll provide my contact details or contact you, which ever is convenient.

Thanks.

It's better to create a job then to get a job.

      • my apologies, cypher67. I've updated the settings to accept PMs. I didn't realise it was switched off by default. I hope you are still willing to help.

It would if there was a question mark at the end.

I want a job in Playboy photography.
I have been known to take a few pictures from time to time and have a great appreciation for the human form.
Can anybody help me with my career change?

    • Dunno considering Playboy has changed their "photography" style and demographic…..

The university that dare not speak its name.

      Univoldemort?

    • Its actually the University of Ballarat, but people tend to turn their heads and walk the other way, whenever I mention it since it's not one of the top universities in Australia.

One possible avenue is first in recruitment (which involves some admin work - getting job descriptions, putting up ads, reviewing resumes, shortlisting the best ones to the hiring manager, doing references, providing feedback to candidates) and then when an HR role pops up, transitioning to it. This is easiest in a large organisation; in smaller organisations the HR manager might do everything.

    • Thanks for the advice ihbh :-)

you may have done this but would it be worthwhile contacting the Australian Human Resources institute (the professional body) https://www.ahri.com.au/

You may be able to join as an affiliate member - or at the very least maintain an up to date contact with the industry. If you completed your qualifications some time ago you may well have gone "stale" - a Degree in Business Management 10-15 years ago would be very different to qualifications available today. Enrol in refresher training courses or other professional development and demonstrate that you are keen to learn and to keep your qualifications up to date and relevant. At the very least, involvement with a professional body will allow you to develop your networks and make valuable contacts and I would imagine in this industry, networks and contacts are EVERYTHING.

Definitely don't push aside positions in recruitment or similar. You need to get a toe hold and then work your way around the industry. People generally don't walk into "the job" straight out of school/university, they need to build their profile and skills. You've had 15 years in the workforce and you now need to take those experiences and re-frame them in a way that screams Human Resource Management for every single position you are interested in - and don't forget that marketing yourself effectively via avenues such as LinkedIn are far more likely to yield results than waiting on jobs to be advertised on SEEK

    • Thanks for the detailed advice ms_caz. :-) I'll certainly incorporate it into my search from here on.

  • Hi Everyone,

Thanks a lot for your responses and advice. I'll take it all into consideration as I continue with my search. :-)
