Mauritius Return ex Sydney $500 @ Air Asia

1190

Seems to be a deal going on Air Asia for flights to Mauritius around June 2017.

Never felt a pressing need to go to Mauritius? Irrelevant! This is OzB and the price is right.

Flights also available from Melbourne and Perth.

        Haha nice try havok44,

in Mauritian creole, "sa ki li" would translate to something like:

"good on ya" or "that's the deal" or "winning"

I was testing the mauritian community on ozb :) it worked.

        • Ohh mersi

    • +2

Sori. Mwa pa kompran. Mwa pa koz Kreol. Pa koz tro veet. Mersi.

only a Dodo would miss this deal

    • I get it ;)

      • +1

        Someone? I don't get it

        • +7

That was where Dodos were found. Mauritius is brilliant. The man had some work to do over there so we had three weeks in Mauritius. I went out on the hotel boat, went scuba diving, parasailing, lay on the beach, travelled on the really good bus system and he had to work. The food is french creole and the people are super friendly. The bonus is that is it wonderfully exotic, but most people are English speakers, as well as French and French/Creole. Highly recommended.

Just did a quick Google search for Mauritius…

    How much for one way?

    • generally cheapest return price is around $1600-1800 from Mel/Syd (air mauritius) until airasia started flying there for about $1100 normal price, this promo makes it about half price

    • Are you planning to move there permanently too?

    • +1

I have never been on an aeroplane, but not sure why people would neg your comment? Safety and reputation would definitely be my first consideration, especially if I were to fly with my children. That report is scary.

      • I know, just trying to inform people that may not be aware.

All Indonesian airlines are banned from the United States and most carriers are blacklisted in Europe.

I'm going to Mauritius June/July next year with my girlfriend to visit her family but I would rather pay 4x or 5x the amount to fly with a safer airline.

Accidents happen, but when an airline knowingly operates an aircraft for a year with a recurring mechanical system malfunction that's just gross negligence.

You can use it as a launchpad to go to Reunion or Madagascar

  • +2

This can't be right! This is awesome as

  • I recently paid this exact price for return flights as a side trip from Jo'Burg doh

  • +3

Went to Mauritius for my honeymoon. Absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit. Amazing price!

    • -3

      Was it scary?

      • No. The Mauritian carrots are quite tame ;)

        • I hear Mauritius is very expensive (on account of all the tourists). Is there truth to this?

        • +5

@bluesky: It is more expensive than say Bali but then it is a luxury destination and geared towards a different type of tourist.

If you want to do Mauritius on the cheap, do what I did : marry a Mauritian! Last time I was there on holiday, we stayed at the in-laws for most of it for free, paid the 'local' price for everything we bought, had ( and learned how to cook) home-made mauritian food, the kids got to practice their french and their creole, free baby-sitting for when we had a romantic weekend away, learned to dance the sega at the mrs' cousin's wedding…Had the best time of my life =) Highly recommended.

        • +1

@Jar Jar Binks: Haha, not so practical advice for the rest of us, then :-) Thanks, who knows, with the savviness of OZB'ers, one day they might come up with more Mauritius deals, which includes accommodation etc.

        • +3

@bluesky: Au contraire! Extremely practical advise for the single ozbargainer. Lots of Mauritians in Australia and even more Mauritians in Mauritius. Go for the holiday, come back with the love of your life and the possibility of beautiful mixed-raced babies:)

        • +1

@bluesky: It can be. Given its size and location, a lot of things are imported, so groceries aren't really cheaper than what you'd pay in Australia. It is a lovely place, though. I'd definitely recommend visiting.

        • +2

@bluesky: If you stay in one of the ultra-touristy resorts, then you'll find accommodation expensive. Food, tours and transport are all quite cheap from my experience. I'd also recommend that if you do stay in one of the resorts, you don't include meals. Mauritian food is cheap and wonderful!

I might be biased though, given I'm half Mauritian :)

        • +1

          @bluesky:
If you want to stay at a tourist resort and order cocktails from the side of the infinity pool*, then yes it it's as expensive as anywhere else.

If you want to rent a small seaside cottage and eat dhal puris from market stalls and freshly cut pineapple on a stick from roadside vendors** then it's pretty cheap.

          *Meh
          **Oh YEAH!

    • Is it tourist friendly or unsafe at night?

      • Human friendly.

      • Very tourist friendly and safe.

      BestAirlineFood2K20

      • What's 2k20? The expiry date of the food?

  • +1

There seems to be pretty good deals flying out of Melbourne, as well, if you pick similar dates; just peck around the ones above until you hit the sweet spots. The trick seems to be the flight back date.

  • +1

    I got this earlier today.

Not to go to Mauritius but to go to Madagascar. Makes it about $1000 vs about $3000 via Joburg

  • Bit the bullet… guess I'm off somewhere totally unexpected and unplanned for Easter/Anzac! Was about $880 each for half a bag and 1.5 meals… Not as cheap as this but was constrained by public holidays :)

  • That's an awesome price.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Got Perth-Mauritius return, all booked in for just $470 :D ozB rocks!

  • +2

After much analysis booked a trip in June for the whole family! Paid extra $70pp so that Sat dep and Sat rtn flights. save annual leave :)
Thanks OP! See you all in Mauritius - I'll be wearing my eneloop t-shirt

    • PS any special entry requirements? Visas Etc?

      • +1

If you are an Australian passport holder then you don't need a visa.

        • thanks mate

  • Syd > MRU 22hours on a AirAsiaX, they should be paying you for the discomfort.
Great price, shame its not direct.

    • Nah direct will take 16hrs - that would be discomfort!

  • +2

Well I'm off to Mauritius for the world's best kiteboarding, $640 ex Melb with sports luggage. We can have an OzBargain meetup over there.. next step, bargain accommodation!

  • everyone got their itinerary emailed to them ? I got my receipt but no itinerary yet

    • Same. I can't access it through my account either. It will turn up eventually I guess.

      • I got my itinerary straight away

  • Whats the catch? Is there mulltiple layovers or are they really long? Also I think Mauritius is more expensive spending wise then say Bali so for the same money you'll get much lower comfort. Only bonus I can think of is bragging you went to exotic "Mauritius" to friends.

    • It's for flights in the middle of winter. However it's the same latitude as the Whitsundays so that's probably not a catch. Apparently there's only 4 rainy days in June and an average temperature of 22.

  • +6

    OzBargain Summit '17?

    • Members + family

  • hmm - not working for me
I pick the flights that I want (mon june 5 - wed june14) for 2 people

At the bottom in blue it is $767 all good
But next to it is A$998 not so good

Then when I try to 'book with AirAsia X' the following site totals to $1538
    what am I missing?

Also, there is no luggage allowance? Seems I would need to add a value pack to get 20kg luggage and 1 meal for $126 each way?

    • If you use the google link in this deal, the listed prices are in USD.

  • Looks well and truly OzB'd.. One outbound flight left at a low price, 3 return

    • Not true, I just booked a week return - had to go Monday-Monday but there were still cheap flights on Sat 17 Jun and other days. Paid $998 (no extras), plus travel insurance in case I need to cancel.

  • +1

Even with the extra $116 for checked in luggage each way it's still a deal compared the the typical price, but it brings it over the impulse buying amount for me.

But have a great trip every one else!

    • What luggage do you need? It's a board shorts and t-shirt climate.

  • There are some fares outside of June too, you just have to patiently scroll/search on the AirAsia website until you find the fare… just booked Monday-Monday over ANZAC day for $548 rtn from Sydney. Thanks OzB and Pacolito - never on my to do list but for that price…….!

  • Hey guys can someone help me?

When I check Google flights it gives a price of $500 (in AUD) but once I click on the "Book with AirAsia" link the cost jumps to $632.00 even without the extra baggage etc? Am I doing something wrong?

    • Don't know. Double check both flights don't have luggage selected. Did you choose a seat? Insurance?

      • Didn't even get to that bit yet, only selected the Exit flight and Return flight (shouldn't it choose this automatically if it's a Return trip?) and they each cost over $300 :S

        • Each date has subtle differences in price.
