School Teacher. Need Advice on Buying a Colour Printer (Maybe Using eBay Deal)

Hi guys,

I need to buy a printer that will probably do about 200 prints a year.

Thinking colour laser as the price seems to be a lot cheaper than I expected, but not fussed.

Almost all prints will be normal paper (no fancy photo prints etc).

What would an ozbarganner suggest as the best bang for buck printer (can include a scanner, not fussed as I mostly just take a photo with my phone instead of scanning these days). Looking for the best price including future ink / toner purchases.

Cheers

  • Maybe speak to your school technician and see what department deals are running at the moment

    • good luck with getting thing cheap from the department…

      • I would imagine this. They can probably get something like 10% off RRP, but that RRP would be set at launch and possibly was never sold for that price at retailers.

  • Cheers, but I don't speak their language!! But they are locked in to like 2 suppliers and a Dept deal is ebay price x 3.

Looks like the Canon MB5360 might fit the bill

  • MB5360 $218ex GST

    • So a decent printer then? Currently $118 at Harveys ($198 then cashback), but if I can work the numbers with the Ebay discount, plus TGG discount it should be well sub $100

      • Isn't the MB5260 an inkjet printer? You seemed to express a preference for a laser.

  • I can see what deals are around that might fit your bill. I'm a Tech myself for a school. I'll check my suppliers

  • I don't have a printer for you but may I express my sympathies that you have to organise your own printing. In what other profession would this be tolerated?

    • I'm sure there will be reasons behind this. My wife is a teacher and has no issue using the printer at school for all her needs.

Yep, I'm based at an offsite location. Can use a school issued supplier, but then my budget is going to take a big hit. In a nutshell, the better price I can get the better off the program will be for the kids.

You would be surprised how much of their own money some teachers use to supplement the materials available to them from the school. It's almost like a badge of honour.

      I think it's lunacy.

I agree, have seen it. In this case it's not my own money, but the more I can save, the better off the kids will be. That being said I did buy my own projector in my room (as there was "no money" in the IT budget) as some scrotum at the top end decided we would be better off with one smart board in our library rather than a handful of projectors across the site. Some times you pick your battles, buy your own and move on.

I recently purchased an Epson as they come with full-size ink cartridges. HP and Canon come with starter cartridges, so you'll be replacing them quite quickly.

I bought an XP-630 from Officeworks for $113 as they price matched an online store.

For you, try the Epson XP-235 for $59.

  • If you need colour accurate (for art class or whatever), then I suggest inkjet, I've heard laser colour printers tend to have banding issues when it comes to really fine adjustments to the same tone. If someone has a laser colour printer or have some experience please elaborate since I don't own one.

If you are doing a lot of prints a year, you don't have to worry about the ink drying.

I'm using Fuji Xerox coloured laser printer I bought from Aldi few years back and it's still working fine.
I buy generic toners on ebay. Our church uses Brother laser printer and works good as well.
Before buying any laser printer, have a look if generic toners are available on ebay.

    Just print at school

  • Give the kids spray paint and they'll print themselves

Go Colour Laser, you won't regret it.
Xerox CM-205w (or its replacement model) is awesome, has a scanner for colour photocopies as well.
Toner lasts ages and is VERY cheap on ebay eg 5 Toners (2 black, 1 each CMY) $37.90 delivered. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/141804114068

    • Thanks affable, much appreciated.

      • Thanks for the tip.

The replacment the DocuPrint CM225 fw is reasonably expensive though… $360 at Mwave. As low as $300 in the more unknown shops.

Not sure if the 225 takes the same carts as the 205 but is seems price competitive anyway on ebay.

        • Just looking on the Ebay sale. The CM225FW is $299 - 15% (Bing Lee) or the smaller brother Fuji Xerox DocuPrint CP225w is $129 - 15%

  • Have to be new? I bought a mp610 in 2006, very cheap ink, very economical. According to the specs, no worse than the mp910 I bought in 2013, so it doesn't seem like there's been any major improvements in the printing itself, its just the ancillary stuff, like network access, printing direct from phones, etc. These printers get thrown away, or sold for peanuts.
