Seems like a decent outdoor ball made out of composite leather. These are selling for ~ $80 on eBay. Cheapest other price I've seen it is $48 from http://au.sportsdirect.com/.

I picked up two of the Spalding NBA Gold basketballs on the $20 Kmart special a while back and lost one recently. Play mostly outdoor courts and looking at picking up the Spalding NBA Grip Control from Kmart for $29 http://www.kmart.com.au/product/spalding-nba-grip-control-ba… but I'm interested to get some feedback from those who've used this Nike ball before if it's a better buy than the Spalding. This Nike True Grip seems like a pretty decent ball at a great price.

    • +1

The true grip is a great ball - go for it. I really dislike spalding balls - they are plasticy, shiny and have no grip.

      • +2

Which? The top flite 250 and up are competition quality made from rubber/synthetic to resemble leather. Plasticy and shiny sounds like you got a full synthetic which are garbage.

        • I didn't buy it - but everytime someone shows up with a spalding ball (outdoors) it gets chucked aside when it comes time to play because they feel crap.

If there is a similarly priced spalding ball that you know is good - do tell.

        • @gringo: I bought this https://www.amazon.com/Spalding-73-139-Replica-Outdoor-Baske… a few years ago and being full rubber it aged well but it has a bit of a dead bounce. Our go to ball is a nike street ball that I got from rebel for $25 which has insane grip being almost too much but its a fantastic ball with a great bounce (yes, some balls bounce better than others).

http://www.harveynorman.com.au/spalding-basketball-tf-250-si… this ball I got with a havery norman voucher a few years ago is our go to indoor ball. Its a fantastic all rounder ball.

          @thedude23:

Cool ok will look out for it. I think a lot of people leave their "good" ball at home when playing outdoors - might explain it.

The Nike versa tack ones are ok for an wet weather ball - but just can't go back to a rubber ball even outdoors.

In any event - for $35 I really don't think you can do better than this one.

        • +1

@gringo: Yep. Not tryin to sound argumentative, but its my experience that balls can be hit or miss and price doesnt determine its quality %100, its just a guide. In my experience though nike and brand jordan make great bballs.

      • Thanks OP and @gringo2 bought one

    • +1

Grip control is fantastic for a RRP $30 ball IF you use it for indoor play only. I used it outdoors twice and the grip is now noticeably worse

      • +1

The Gold ball was the same, it started out as a great ball with great grip but has now worn down considerably. Will be interested to see how this True Grip goes, in fact I'll probably replace the Gold down the track with a Grip Control anyway.

  • What is the difference compared with this one: http://store.nike.com/au/en_gb/pd/versa-tack-basketball/pid-…

    • +1

versa tack is mostly rubber - good for if it is wet, but otherwise inferior. The versa tack will last longer for outdoor play.

      • Yeah good question and pick up, I'm interested in a response too.

      • they 'patina' aswell on concrete and become easier to handle. But yeh inferior to an indoor ball for indoor play.

  • Thanks op

  • +1

Got free shipping; used cash rewards - shipping charge only disappeared at the very end (just before going to PayPal). Checked out as a guest.

    Thanks OP!

Wow basketball must be getting big in Oz, didn't think I would get on the front page for my first post. Cheers guys!

    • +7

Basketball is picking up the pace. But… Bargain is a big thing here.

      • +6

The league pass deals are usually popular. I enjoy bball more than AFL now, its not fun to watch afl anymore.

        • I have to agree the days of Ozzy rules are long gone. Aussie rules was always about the screemer for me and end to end kicking. Teachers won't let kids play the rugby scrum they call footy now.

    • -1

It's only going to get more popular as Australians start to shine in the NBA and we win gold at Tokyo 2020

      • +2

as i called it this year, we will choke again in tokyo.

  • Thanks OP! Just ordered one.

  • only if it was a bit oval ;-/

  • How would it feel to play with this ball indoors?

    • -3

      Shaved or hairy?

  • Did anyone else get slapped an international transaction fee for this???

    • Nope. Only $35 charged to my card.
      Received it today.

    • I was and I am with NAB. Bummer

      • Why the international transaction fee?

        • Not so sure. I am gonna send a quick email to Nike asking for reimbursement..

        • @Ahan:
Let me know how it goes!

  • Just got my ball. It doesn't seem that bouncy?

    • I agree and I'm not even sure if the ball is full size.

      • +1

I pumped it up to absolute maximum and it was a bit better. Nothing that special about the ball though, was expecting a bit more.

        • +1

If you drop it from above your head it should bounce to your chest.

All newly inflated balls seem small in my experience. They get bigger over time. You'd rather that than becoming oversized later on.

    • Pump it with nitrogen.
