I am assuming school holidays are always blocked out of sales as a general rule?

    • +7

yeah, school holidays = full planes, they don't need to discount, so they don't (hence Qantas' record $1b profit this year).

      • +1

Its good that they're recovering some of the $3b loss they made in 2014.

        • +4

Majority of the The 3 billion loss was just accounting loss anyway.

          @tomleonhart:

Yeah but this years profit is mostly due to lower cost of fuel which wont always be priced so cheaply..

        • @Shinkz: fuel benefit for this year was ~500 mils. 500 out of 1.5 bil, wouldn't call that profit was mostly made out fuel.

And if it was dued to fuel price, why is Virgin posting loss ?

        • +1

          @tomleonhart:

It still is fuel if it isn't directly corresponding. Reason is that they can price their fares lower due to lower this cost reduction. They then increase the passenger loading percentage in order to still turn a profit.

The extra cash on hand in the short term lowers their debt covenants meaning they pay less interest and the rising QAN share price also helps with this. Note that the share price would have originally risen due to news in the oil markets.

I'm sure there are some other things that would have factored into this profit, but I still stand by my opinion that it's mostly due to fuel costs.

I believe virign was locked into a higher priced fuel hedging that will come off this year. They have also taken on costs associated with the purchase of tiger air and the opposite of qantas, a lowering share price and higher interest payments due to their debt covenants.

        • @Shinkz: we shall wait until next year to see what result qantas comes up with. Don't think it will be this good :P

    • I am assuming school holidays are always blocked out

Nope, there are still some $59 fares from MEL to the Gold Coast in January…

I saw this & thought, bugga I waited nearly an hour to get Jetstar to price beat Tiger last night…..but I still got Melb->Bris $20 cheaper then this sale.

  • Melb-HK is around $466, so tempting…..

    • Return? I can never find the right prices for these sales. I always get full prices.

      • Yes return. Random searched. If have specific time then best of luck mate!

    • Just do it, when you dont have the money you will have regretted it and YOLO.

    • 28h40m to get there, 13h to get home.
It's not a real good match for connecting flights (9h30m direct).

Avalon to Adelaide, is not an example.

    • Why not? I caught that flight recently and actually preferred it to the other airport. The SIA bus to and from was excellent, quiet and comfortable, the airport was quick and painless, and the view coming in to Melbourne was spectacular.

    Nothing for japan :(

      bugger. got my hopes up

      • +1

There are a few from Adelaide via Melbourne to Tokyo/Sapporo though

Gold Coast has 299 one way and 263 back for november/early dec

far from the best we've seen but I doubt there will be another gigantic sale before then??

    • It's not their best price ever, but one way for $380 during snow season isn't too bad

  • +1

Any idea when they will have another 2 for 1 with Japan?

    • +3

There was one on november 20th last year, so might see something in the next few months.

    • I'm waiting for that as well, I hope they will have one for snow season

  • +2

The return flights are much cheaper than forward flights. Checked for flights in the first week of November. The return flights from Singapore or Kuala lumpur or Penang are all under $70.

  • What is there to do at the whittsundays? and the airport it lands at isn't the whittsundays is it? help me.

Cairns to Bali for $109 or Townsville to Bali for $99 are good for the North Queenslanders.

    • Sure, worth the call!

      • +1

  • thanks. It's good to finally get in on a sale that I have dates that match :)

  • Damn, the exact same return flight I booked through expedia is now $100 cheaper in this sale. Looking at the fine print but somehow I think I'm just going to have to suck it up.

EDIT: Never mind, My flight out is now $300 more for the same date so I'm calling this is win in the "when should I book lottery."

  • i wanted to go bangkok for $700, but when theres like 29hr total travel time with no meal provided unless you pay for it, i'd rather go qantas for $900 with meal and 9hr travel direct..
