It can be tricky buying a watch for someone else, particularly a 17 y/o I think. Very much a personal preference thing.
A G-Shock would be a reasonably safe bet, if you absolute had to buy someone a watch.

If you want to be done with battery power, and a decent price, you need the Citizen owned QQ Solar [powered] series, they are around $35, screwed together in China with all Japanese made components
Yeah I know about QQ Solar but haven't found one that I really like.
They still use a battery, but it's rechargeable. See my comment above for Casio Tough Solar Illuminators.
There are also automatic watches that have no battery, they rely on movement to wind a spring but I don't think Casio have them.

The face is like new, but the gold covered in scratches.
Whoever thought gold (solid or plate) was a sensible material for watches??
