Hi Team,

I replied to a forum post with these offers from Banggood, I was considering whether to pick one up myself. And now that I have, I thought I’d post them because it’s a pretty good deal; seems cheaper than previous offers posted here.

Review of the mi pad 2 can be found here

16gb android version for $159.99USD (~$211.67 AUD) with coupon 152adb

64gb android version for $203.99USD (~$270.05 AUD) with coupon 6e088f

64gb windows version for $211.99USD (~$280.64 AUD) with coupon 890f21

I'd recommend the 64Gb version(s) as there is no SD card expansion slot.

i thought there was a dual OS version?

Real problem is Windows 10 needs more than 2GB of RAM

    • -2

      Really?

      • I have a atom mini PC connected to my TV. It has 2GB of RAM and runs Win10. Of course any device would benefit from more RAM, but I doubt on a tablet one would be running anything super intensive.

      • Yes. There's lags with Atom processors with 2GB. This lag comes from just using file explorer.

I don't know if that's because of 2GB RAM or because of Atom or what. Windows definitely has higher system requirements than Android.

        • Also have lag when using Chrome on my Asus EeeBook.

        • My 1gb ram windows phone works fine but my 2gb android phone lags

        • +1

          its because of atom

im using a 4gb ram on a z8300 cpu and it STILL lags opening files and doing basic browsing

the new cherry trail may be more efficient but its virtually the same cpu as baytrail years ago in terms of real life performance.

          @Balls:

emmc storage is the main culprit. Its basically an SD card and their random access times are extremely poor in comparison to SSD. Windows OS and applications tends to have lots of little files. Once you gotten used to running Windows on an SSD, going to an emmc based Windows sort of feels like going back to HDD.

Windows Phone is a mobile OS. Desktop Windows (the version in this tablet) is a desktop OS, obviously. A mobile processor is powering a desktop OS. There's going to be compromises.

"2GB Android phone" is not very descriptive. It could be any old piece of crap. Phones have moved to 3GB for a few years now. Are you running some MTK phone from china?

No it doesn't need more than 2GB of RAM.

My Windows tablet runs fine for using Edge, email, Feedly and emulation.

      • You don't need food. Only if you don't want to starve would you need it.

    • Happily there's an android version :)

  • Reading the review, I'm surprised they didn't put a GPS chip in the device (for Pokemon Go!!) and that it's stuck on Android 5.1.

But it does have great screen quality and would make a great device for the kids to do games & videos, will probably pick one up.

    • Doesn't Xiaomi push out monthly ota updates on their tablets?

      • As an ex-Xiaomi phone owner, they sent out weekly "updates". But these are pointless little "features" and tweaks, the core OS remains ancient.

Mi pad 2 was a bit of a flop.
A bit much to pay for a Tablet that…
Will always be stuck on Android 5.1
Has the wrong screen aspect ratio
    Has no GPS

IMO good if you want a cheap (but pretty good) Windows 10 tablet, but then it's a bit crippled with only 2 GB RAM

I bought one of these, because $211 delivered is cheap. But for this price, there isn't much that would compete with it quality wise. I received mine last week and was instantly impressed. The quality of it is on the same level as the iPad mini. I looked in the box and thought initially that is what they had sent me. And how Apple have not gotten on the litigation train over this after all their bullshit with Samsung. I own an iPad mini 2 as well and compared them and had to try the iPad mini case on the Mi Pad 2 because that's how close i thought they were. It's only a matter of mm in it.

As for 5.1 Android, that is a bit sad. But i don't know if that is more of a tablet specs or an OS issue with it being on Miui 7. But using the Mi Pad 2 is buttery smooth. It does everything I want it to do. So much so that this was for my "break every electronic device" daughter. Now she has the iPad mini 2 and i kept this.

It does not have GPS. This made me sad. I was hoping it would before i read about it/bought it, as i needed a replacement for my car GPS (2012 Nexus 7). But it is not the end of the world. If i really wanted to get excited, i could just share GPS over bluetooth from my phone or bluetooth GPS puck.

As for the screen aspect ratio… i dont know. It is identical to iPad mini. That works really well for me. I dont like the whole tall and narrow feeling of the Nexus 7, as it feels like a really big phone. The Mi Pad 2 has more of a tablet feeling about it. Sure, it's no good for watching your favorite widescreen videos on it, but hey, i didn't buy it for that.

My verdict on it is, for the price, if you want a tablet that does every day to day mundane things, like email, web browsing, youtube, toilet solitaire, this is a great tablet. Worried about your $400 iPad mini being stolen or wrecked, this feels the same in the hand and Miui OS certainly feels a lot like iOS in general, but it's 50% cheaper. And this has USB-C and seriously, on my 2.4amp charger, it takes a little over an hour to go from 10~15% back to full charge!

Want to play Pokemon Go?? forget about it. No GPS and no Android 6.0+ :(

Personally, i don't think you could do much better if all you wanted was a really well built, high quality tablet for this sort of money.

      • I looked in the box and thought initially that is what they had sent me. And how Apple have not gotten on the litigation train over this after all their bullshit with Samsung.

Because of Chinese law, litigating against them is very difficult. But that's also why Xiaomi has not released their products in the west. As soon as they do, Apple can go after them.

  • Intel has given up on the x86 on Android, so that says a lot about these kind of devices. ARM is the way to go.

    • Not just x86 on Android. Intel has given up x86 on smartphones and very low cost laptop/tablet market.

  • i bought the windows version and had no idea how to use it, so i reflashed it to android and am now loving it :)

however, if anyone has one or did the same as me, can i ask if your tab takes forever to charge? My tab is charging at a rate of 13% per hour… which is a bit worrying..

I have a Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 64gb windows tablet and am very happy with it. The screen is awesome. The battery life is really good (Windows can sometimes have issues going into connected standby). There is an issue with the volume fluctuating by this can be fixed by disabling some microphone settings. The CPU is significantly faster than the old baytrails and 2gb of RAM is sufficient for Windows 10 and works fine for day to day tasks and light gaming. Dual boot is not officially available but there are tutorial for setting up dual boot (http://en.miui.com/thread-292301-1-1.html).

I would imagine the Android version is better for battery life and obviously has more apps.

    • I don't think the CPU on Cherry trail is any faster than baytrail, apart for two additional cores, i think the big difference is the GPU. I could be wrong ?

      • +2

Well I know from coming from my Lenovo Miix 2 8" using a a Z3740 baytrail to the Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 with the Z8500 there is a noticeable difference in speed. Using resource hungry pdf and ebook editing tools run much faster. I don't play games so I can't comment about the GPU upgrade.

Yes it is x86 based so all Windows programs can run on this tablet (providing they work with Windows 10).

As for everyone's comments about 2gb of RAM not being enough I would interested to know if they've ever owned a windows tablet. I use mine for work everyday and never close tabs or background apps. Obviously I wouldn't try and sell someone on a Windows 8" tablet unless they had some actual reason for using the Windows Eco system.

        • As for everyone's comments about 2gb of RAM not being enough I would interested to know if they've ever owned a windows tablet.

I own two. They both lag. They don't lag in Android mode.

    • being an x86 based tablet can't you install just about any Windows programs???
I mean not just the mobile store apps
      If not it's extra useless

      • Yes you can. And that's the beauty of it. There are a ton of older and newer games not available on Android.

  • I'm skeptical about a windows tablet being usable with only 2gb of ram. Open a few Firefox tabs and some other apps i think you'd hit the limit pretty quickly. A tablet should be quick and convenient to use so i dont want to have to constantly close and restart standard apps like the web browser. I could use a less memory intensive browser but i'd prefer getting a tablet with more ram.

    • -2

constantly close and restart standard apps

I don't think you know how Windows works. It's not like Android/iOS, where to OS randomly kills processes. It has paging when a memory limit it reached. No apps will randomly close (unless you've stupidly turned off Virtual Memory). Performance will suffer, but it shouldn't be a huge deal if the flash memory is fast enough.

      • Who said apps will randomly close? And yes i know how paging works, thanks. But as you said performance will suffer.

So care to tell us if 2gb is sufficient or the flash memory is fast enough in the Xiaomi?

        • -1

Who said apps will randomly close?

Then what did you mean by "i dont want to have to constantly close and restart standard apps"? Memory leaks?

        • @PainToad: He meant that he himself would need to close the apps to free up memory.

  • del.

  • Shame it does not have microSD slot and GPS. Those two things - costing how much? $5? $10? And I bet they would be selling many many more of those units.

  • CPU quite slow, bit of a waste in my opinion to go with Windows OS.

  • Can you just get the 64gb android and then flash windows?
