  • No Woolworths offer on my Discovery card :(

    • Me too… or my ANZ Black Amex.

  • can you purchase woolies gift cards?

    • You should be able to, as the purchase will show as regular purchase on Amex statement.

  • Whats the best Amex issued card to get, is there any without a annual fee? I have enough cards as it is.

    • +3

      there are 3.
      Amex Essentials
Qantas Amex - collects Qantas points.
Velocity Escape - collects Virgin Australia points.

Just depends on what you need / want.

Be sure to use the AMEX WIKI and get bonus referral points. You win and your referrer wins too. :)

      • But be careful.. .. I have a Platinum Edge with no annual fee in the first year. Referred a friend, they were charged the annual fee up front, plus $50 more than mine in subsequent years. Had to call up to cancel. But now they are ineligible to take up any of their own Amex promo for 12months.

At the moment: Amex Velocity Platinum CC with 100k velocity points as sign up bonus offer expire on 15th of August 2016 unless extended. You also get other bells and whistles such as a return domestic flight (annualy), invitation to Virgin and Amex lounge, travel and purchase insurance, etc.

Which card is best depends on your circumstances and preferences. Plenty of good recommendations/deals by OzB members for Amex cards to suit difference preferences - some with huge bonuses, free flight, travel insurance etc, so have a look around.

All of these cards get cashback offers, but not all offers appear on all cards, hence no harm having more than 1 card to increase the likelihood of getting an offer.

I can only share info about the fee-free cards, since I have analysed them for my own use, and have the first two :
      Essential
      Qantas Discovery
      Velocity Escape

Assuming you decide on a fee-free card, then:

      (a) if you are into redeeming flights, go for the Qantas or Velocity cards, depending on which airline you are collecting points for. I have seen OZB members value them at 1c/point or more. So, for e.g., Qantas Discovery card, this translates to a 1% reward rate or more.

      (b) if you are into redeeming cash-equivalent rewards (cash to offset card balance, or supermarket-type gift cards), then the reward percentages are:

      • Velocity: 0.556%
      • Qantas Discovery: 0.569%
(If you join Qantas AutoRewards, you will get $20 for 3000 points - which is 0.667%)
      • Amex Essential: 0.741% (simply use points as cash against card balance, 1000pt=$7.41, or redeem other rewards)

      (c) you get application bonus for application.

      • Essential : You get $75 ($50 without referral) if you apply online and spend $500 in the first 2 months.

      • Qantas Discovery: You receive 12,500 Qantas Points when you spend $300 in the first 3 months of Card Membership and an additional 2,500 Qantas Points when you first spend on selected Qantas products and services in Australia.

And other amex cards too, the referral details are all here.

      Hope this helps.

      • Hi Bluesky, I am currently hold an Amex supplementary card, if I apply via the referral link for a primary card, will the referral still get the application bonus? I read Amex "refer a friend" term & condition, it mentioned: "You cannot refer a friend who already has one of our cards or has held one in the last 12 months". Amex did not specify whether the card you hold is a supplementary card or a primary card.

Similar questions have been asked before, about application bonus if one is already a cardholder, in this thread and others. Seems like they do not always enforce it.

My experience is with application bonus when applying directly. It is not supposed to apply to existing cardholder. I wasn't expecting any for my second Amex card (I was already primary cardholder for one card), but still got it. So it was a pleasant surprise :-)

Thanks for your response. If I do apply, I will be applying for an Essential card then I will be using your link :)

        • @Purple: Thank you! Appreciate that :-)

        • +1

Hi Bluesky, I have just applied for Amex Essential card and using your link :) Hope it will get approve and we will both receive the referral bonus.

        • @Purple: Hey thanks, Purple :-) Please don't forget to spend $500 in the first 2 months, to get the $75 bonus. One good way, if you have nothing much to spend on, is to get Wish giftcards at 5% discount from say, Cashrewards, which can be used in the woolworths chain of stores (woolworths, woolworths petrol, big w, dan murphy, masters etc). Cheers.

Hi Bluesky, I just received the Essential cards, cheers! However, the welcome mail did not indicate any thing about the spend & referral bonus of $75. Nevertheless, I will make sure that I spend $500 in the first 2 months, then keep the figure cross that AMEX will give us the bonus. Thank you for all your tips and advice.

        • @Purple: Great, just in time for the shop small September too! So looking forward, I trust you are too :-). Yes, the welcome pack does not mention this $75 referral bonus; same as other referred cases as well. But it should be fine; Amex knows which are referred applications.

  • Can anyone please provide manual links for the WOW one ?

  • +3

Manual links only exist if the offer appears on Amex Connect, but they don't seem to be appearing there (yet?), so no bank-issued cards, and no manual links…

Out of curiosity, those who did receive a Woolworths offer, do you regularly use your Amex at Woolies?

I didn't receive a Woolies offer and I always use my AMEX to buy E-Gift cards or use in store.

Maybe they are targeting those who don't spend at Woolies?

    • I did not receive any Woolworths offer. I ALWAYS use Amex to pay for the bills. I think you are right, AMEX is targeting those do not use AMEX card at Woolworths.

      • Use my plat edge every second day at Woolies and received the woolies offer.

      • I use it at WW, Coles and few bills.

    • I received it on a PlatEdge that is regularly used at Woolies, and Gold Charge (on same account) that is rarely used.

    • I do my groceries shopping at Woolies probably every second or third week (i have a plat edge)

      • damn… I have Plat edge, but didn't get the woolies..

    • Used my Amex issued card a few times at woollies. No offer this time.

  • I got Woolies and Harvey Norman, no Hugo Boss though (not that I could afford it anyway :))

  • Got Woolies and Ingogo on PlatEdge and Gold Charge.
    Harvey Norman only on PlatEdge.

  • Anyone got s direct link to the Amex woolworths offer?

  • My Amex issued Platinum Edge card doesnt have Woolies offer.. :(

  • I got the Woolies offer on Amex Platinum.

A quick question, if I have activated the offer on the primary card, does it work if my wife went shopping to woolies on the supplementary card (or will it only work with the primary card)? When I log in to her amex online, no offers at all show up.

    • No, the offer is really tied to the card. She may also have the offer, and can save that offer to her card as well.

      • +1

Thanks bluesky, i'll make sure it's paid on my card then. No offers have ever shown up on her card…

        • Interesting … our primary/supp cards have almost the same offers most of the time.

        • +1

          @bluesky:
Yeap you should both get the offer on your primary and supp which I have been getting.

  • Amex velocity: no offers at all!

  • Amex issued card. Only Hugo boss and ingogo

From American Express regarding the targeted Woolworths offer:

Our Marketing Team launches various promotional offers at regular intervals, basis the spending patterns, credit history, tenure of Card etc. The offers may differ from Card to Card.

If you don’t see an ongoing offer on your online account, you can write to us and we’ll try to enroll your Card manually.

Mention that you saw this Facebook post and you should have a good chance.

    • +7

Thanks! I emailed them and was enrolled in it.

      Here is the email I sent to them;

      Hi Amex Team,
I noted on your Facebook page a Woolworths offer (spend 30, get 10) however when logging on to my Amex offers portal, it was not there, nor could I find it on Amex connect. Are you able to add it for me manually?
      https://www.facebook.com/americanexpressaustralia/posts/1123…
      Thanks,

      • Any idea, how do I email them for my bank issued card?

      • fingers crossed :)

      • +2

        Thanks. Worked for me.

        • mine too! I asked for it to be added for my supplementary card too and they obliged. :)

      • worked for me too, thanks :)

    • +2

      Thanks Hamza.

    • +2

Thanks very much, Hamza23. Was enrolled and received the most pleasant email in a long time, from their Cust Service. Amex Cust Service is truly top-grade.

      • +2

No problems, glad it worked for everyone. Agree their customer service was ultra friendly and also explained why some get it and others don't (to confirm our assumptions).

  • +2

Don't bother emailing them if you have a bank issued Amex card. They added the offer for my Amex/Amex but refused to honor it for CBA Amex.

  • +2

Is there a manual link for Harvey Norman?

  • Anyone tried to buy HN gift and able to get $50 credit back?

  • Thoughts on the platinum edge vs David Jones Amex card?
