Button mapping and 3.5mm input? Wish they would have done this the first time round with the X1..

  • +1

Finally a decent bluetooth controller for Windows tablet.

  • Happy I just sold my xb1 controller with wireless adapter last week, got $70 for it so that's basically paid for one of these :)

    • But doesn't the wireless adaptor allow multiple controllers on PC? eg two player

      • Indeed it does. Supports up to eight.

  • Also, does anyone know if this will be able to pair with Android devices natively?

    • Yes.

      • Can I see a source on that?

  • So.. The previous one with the 3.5mm jack is the same as this but no bluetooth?

    • Yes, I believe previous xb1 controllers use Wi-Fi direct.

      • -1

If they use Wi-Fi direct then the answer may be no because of latency. Wi-Fi direct has half the latency of bluetooth - or at least it does according to Nvidia marketing.

That said I suspect this will only be an issue with multiplayer and even then perhaps not much of one.

I have also read reviews where build quality was bought up as being worse compared to the previous controller.

        • I think the new controllers can utilise both Bluetooth and wi-fi direct.

If you are suggesting that the new controllers will suffer from input lag I have never had an issue with dualshock controllers which use BT.

I also read that the new ones feel lighter, and thus less durable (whether thats true, who knows).

        • @lyle88: Any BT lag is only going to matter in multiplayer games where reaction time is at a premium like FPS - and even then how much it matters is debateable.

        • They new controllers can use both Wifi Direct and Bluetooth - the Xbox One doesn't have Bluetooth, so it still needs Wifi Direct to connect to the actual console.

        • Durability is something to consider. I ended up getting an elite controller because I kept breaking the inside of the normal controllers when playing Fifa. So far so good with the elite. Shame since the 360 controllers were so robust. I still have 6 working examples of those and they were abused a lot.

        • @imurgod: Are you kicking your controllers around a football pitch? How do you keep breaking them playing Fifa?

        • I'm actually very very gentle with them. Mine took a while but literally everyone I know has had the same issue. It's a known fault. There's a plastic piece inside that breaks. It's an easy fix but really shouldn't happen. I also get random controller drop-outs no matter what. I sit about 4 metres from my console. The new ones have extended range so that's good but there's no elite version.

  • Do these work with existing Xbox ones?

    • +3

You want to know if the Xbox One Wireless Controller works with an Xbox one?

    • +3

Absolutely not, whatever gave you that idea?

    • Yep, supports both Bluetooth and Xbox wireless.

  • +2

Put those eneloops to use men

  • +1

+1 because this is the S controller

Description mentions "textured grips" which is only on the S controller AFAIK

    • The Forza and Luna white had rubberized grip… so similar I guess

      • +1

It's not quite the same; the texture that is mentioned for the S control res printed on the plastic so they don't quite feel rubbery. It is a little better though.

I'd be wary about using this with anything that isn't a Microsoft product. I bought one and it doesn't like my Steam Link or even Big Picture Mode when directly used with my PC. I've also heard it won't work at all with the PS4. My impression is that it's implementation as a Bluetooth gamepad is not typical.

    • +5

Why would it work with the PS4? It has different buttons and is missing the touch pad. Even PS3 controllers won't work with the PS4, nor will your Bluetooth remote.

  • Does the 3.5mm jack work in Windows? When you plug in headphones to it, will it also silence your speakers? If so, where is the volume control for the headphones?

    • The last xb1 controller with 3.5mm jack supported audio through the controller (using the wireless adapter for windows 10). I'm not sure about this model though..

      • Does this model come with the wireless adapter? If that one supported audio in Windows, this one should you would think..

But does it cut off your speakers when you plug in the headphones?

    • No, it will not work.

      • You tested it?

  • Shame it's not on their ebay store. I would love to use my $50 credit.

    • I'm sure it will end up there soon enough

  • Sold out online

    • Buy in store :)

    • I think that is for US.

      • ops aha, mistake.

  • why controllers are so expensive….i got my xbox360 wireless for 26$ (pick up from dick smith) during christmas promotion…is there many material and technology different ?

    • It's newer than 360 controllers which have been around for a long time. Old stuff is cheaper.

  • Has anyone tried to price match at EB games?

  • +1

I managed to snag one from their ebay site for the same price: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Xbox-One-Wireless-Controller-…

I only paid $28 with my $50 voucher. Would have struggled to find something to buy with it otherwise.

    • Nice find on the ebay listing for Target, couldn't find the bloody controller when I looked for it at work. Search functions be damned.

      • It didn't go up until a day after this post. I was searching for it too and it wasn't there.

There were only 2 left at Targetau when I got mine.

Looks like they're back in stock now though.

  • Anyone know if this new controller will work the the Wireless Adaptor for PC or does it only connect to PC with Bluetooth now?

    • I would assume it does, however, that adapter costs $40 on its own, so if you need the adapter, better to buy the one that includes it.

Thanks OP! Just placed an order :)

  • +1

    Just received mine today.

I can confirm that the audio port works via USB in Windows 10. According to the site it will not work via Bluetooth. Connecting through BT will require the W10 Anniversary Update which is not even available to me yet (they are rolling it out over 4 weeks, starting with the fastest hardware first).

It isn't automated however. Plugging in headphones will not immediately cut the audio to your speakers nor will you hear anything through the headphones. You need to go to your audio settings and switch the source of your audio from speakers to headphones.

    • Thanks for confirming that. I was ready to jump on this deal but given all the reported issues with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update and this newly released controller (as well as previous ones), I may hold off until MS sort their sh1t out.

No audio via Bluetooth would be a showstopper for me but the limit of only one controller connected via Bluetooth at once might deter me further - more info here. I may have to go back to pining after the Elite Controller with the wireless adapter.

      • My W10 machine did an update the other day and now looks a tad different - signing out is actually a little harder to find now! Would that be the Anniversary Update you speak of?

My controller will arrive today or tomorrow.

        • Most likely, yes.

I can't get the update even when I check for updates.

    • I received my controller today and I also have the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. I can confirm the audio automatically routes through the controller once you plug in headphones. Unfortunately I only have the controller connected via USB as I am still waiting for my Bluetooth adaptor to arrive.

Remember to download the 'Xbox Accessories' app from the Windows Store to update the firmware of the controller.

      • I downloaded that app. Said there were no firmware updates available.

Did you have updates on yours? That's strange, since we both got it from the same place. Should be the same batch.

Maybe mine was pre-updated to the latest?

        • That is very strange, even the ars technica article mentions the firmware update. My only guess is that the update didn't show up for you since you have not yet got the Win 10 anniversary update.

    • Ummmm you can force the AU update whenever you want. MS even documented how to do it.

I never get people who sit waiting for updates.

      • You can if you download the media creator, which I didn't want to do.

Pressing the "Check for updates" button in settings will say that it's up to date and no updates are available.

  • I really like the new RT and LT compared to the 360's. It just feels so natural. It was very difficult to rapidfire the 360's triggers. My favorite controller is still the PS2's because I've never been a fan of deep analog triggers. The only games where it matters is driving games, which I largely don't play, and when I do play them I either want the trigger all the way in, or completely off, so the analog levels in between don't matter too much to me. Playing a shooter with RT to shoot though, I would prefer if it was a digital button instead of a trigger because it's quicker to press a button with less travel time.

I like that the new X1 triggers are not so springy and resisting your finger.

  • No stock on Target's website or eBay store.

Found this, is this the same controller??

    https://www.target.com.au/p/xbox-one-wireless-controller-inc…

No - this is the pre-existing version.

New one only comes in white unless you design your own online (higher price point).

      • Ah I see, thank you.

    • +1

      • Will do. Want one for my XPS 13 ;)
