    Good price.
Any times where the total trip time is less than 30 hours?

    • +12

Long stopover times are the downside - not an enjoyable way to start / end your trip.

Just checked Gold Coast flights - vary from 12:40 to 51 hours. Showing $501.

Jetstar direct flights are around 9 hours & cheaper when on sale (no longer direct to Osaka from Gold Coast).

Flew Jetstar in April for $249 return from Cairns. Didn't book seats, just carry on luggage for a month. Got lucky with πŸ†“ movies both ways, plus πŸ†“ dinner & breakfast on return 😊

August can be far too hot & humid, Sept is better & Nov is great for change of colour of leaves! But depends where you are bound.

      • How does one get lucky with those freebies?

        • Flirt with the hostie

          @hardya:
          Well, he was cute πŸ˜€

          No, pure luck.
My nickname in Japan is Very Lucky.

By not booking seats & checking in late, I usually get good ones. Other frugal travellers have similar experiences. Those seats were possibly originally booked & cancelled but still had packages (movies, meals) assigned to that seat. That's my theory.

Otherwise I get a row to myself or extra leg space. (Got a row to myself on a fairly packed Air Asia flight - could see the resentment of those packed in so tightly as I lay down.) Helps that I am a sole traveller.

Others are luckier & get bumped up to Business, so I'm not that lucky.

But a few perks on Jetstar are insignificant compared with the gifts & experiences the Japanese people give me.

(Travelled with tour guides in training for 2 days in a mountainous region, learning about the local history. They paid for everything, we ate & drank together, and gave me $200 when I left to walk in the mountains!)

(There's a poster up at the moment for an event in Kobe - with my face on it. I tell them it won't attract anyone! But walking in a park 2 years ago, I was politely mobbed after a short appearance on TV performing traditional Japanese storytelling, in English.)

Despite numerous journeys to Japan, I speak only a few words in Japanese.

          @Infidel: sweet review lol!
          Rocku on!

          @Infidel:

Can attest to this. Coming back from KL a few years back my partner and I didn't book our seats and each got a row of three to ourselves. so luxurious! Similar glares from the rest of the cabin.

        • @phoenixx:
Used this travel hack for many years - never been disappointed. I think I learnt this on Air Asia - by chance. All those at the end of the check-in queue with unbooked seats got upgraded to better seats. We had a good laugh about our luck. (Was told the rows of empty seats are to balance the load, so they like to pack people in & leave some rows vacant.)

Worked fairly well for couples too - glad you benefited from the hack. Groups & couples usually want to sit together, so book & pay a little extra for their seats.

Strangely, it did feel luxurious having the extra room, & more so because of the initial glaring from other passengers. I think that effect only works with packed discounted flights. I've been given a row to myself on a full price airline & thought nothing of it. A rare hidden joy of cheap flying πŸ˜€

        • They used to turn the movies on for free on the Dreamliner prior to them installing the card swipe thing on the IFE's. Now that they are installed, they don't do it anymore

        • @Infidel:

You should really look in to learning it. I am fluent in the language (Family moved over so I went to local school there) and host a meetup group of both Japanese & English speakers. I know most other states have groups like this too. It's always great to learn another language =)

          @Cyphar:
          πŸ—»Thanks🎏

That's what I'm told - regularly (in various countries). But my frustrating lack of ability to learn language, my desire to communicate at a deep level, and the helpfulness of locals… have meant I have traveled with just English (up to 9 months a year for over a decade).

My rice farmer friend from a mountain village of 200 always encourages me to learn the language. We were drinking beers & watching TV after a long soak in his local Onsen. I cheekily asked why would I need to understand Japanese. He responded - so I could understand the TV program. I said it was about sick animals that went to Onsen & got better. He was surprised I understood. Some things don't need language.

I miss out on some interactions, but have a different perspective to native speaking Foreigners.

Some things are hard to communicate in my native language - English. Discussing deep issues like terminal illness & issues surrounding death, or meaning of life (common topics people discuss with me)… take a thorough grounding in the local language. So I'm lucky people I meet are far more gifted than me. It's the listening which counts. Sharing. One man in Kyoto said to me after discussing matters deeply, it was like he was with Buddha. It was the first time he had discussed such things - not easily done in Japan. A wonderful memorable day, shortly before he died.

Japanese people are often so helpful, that local language is almost unnecessary. I travel off the tourist routes, sometimes hitchhiking in remote regions - where English speakers are rare.

Have had the best experiences where spoken language was not used. We just laugh & enjoy the sharing. It's a unique experience for many & they don't want me to leave. I miss that, and Japan.

That's sometimes the magic of travel - getting lost with a stranger (even if it's only linguistically), who becomes a friend. Not understanding is a wonderful challenge. Just when I think I understand Japan, I realise I never will.

          But this is totally off-topic!

Can confirm, this is how it works.

You should buy more flights so more deals show up for us :P

    • That is life

  • +12

Even if this was $100 I wouldn't fly Air Asia.

    • +2

Exactly! The recent near miss at Coolangatta being the most recent example that demonstrates that avoidance is the safest wsy

    • +6

AirAsia are have the best service and nicest food of any budget airline I've flown. They put JetStar's SE Asia arm to shame.

      • +8

If you value service rather than safety then this is a good deal =]!

    • +1
    • Don't like Air Asia? Then ignore this deal.
Choice is something we as consumers have. And guess what - hundreds of people choose Air Aisa.

  • How many Jetstar Pilots put aircraft an aircraft the ocean, drove it off the runway, slammed in on the runway, broke assigned flight levels?

    None

    • -3

How many wukka wukka squiggly sqaggly flight boom huh?

      • +1

I see you've played Word Salad before!

  • +1

    Why the sudden AirAsia hate?

    • True. It happens most times when there are AA deals. I don't know why they bother reading the deal if they hate AA so much. NOW personally I would prefer to fly 1st class with Emirates hehe!

    • Because they're scum bags

    • +2

Racist bogans, negging shit because they're poor

    • They are not Malaysian.

      • All airlines look the same to some people…

        • True, and for some part people end up on a Malaysian flight on a Qantas ticket on a one world codeshare…

All airlines are guilty of some form of negligence, nobody has a clean slate. But some are better than others.

    • It's not sudden it's been a target since https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesia_AirAsia_Flight_850…

Personally I'd never fly Air Asia but I don't come in here carrying on about it and negging deals. Thousands of people still do every day and arrive safe and well. But haters gonna hate.

    • I fly them frequently. Work travel has me flying at the cheapest rate possible but they don't seem to say no when I ask to fly Business Class on AirAsia so I take it up. That seat, for a budget airline, has to be one of the comfiest seats I've flown on.

      • haha probably since no one hardly books them.

I assume these are the 'flatbed' options you can choose instead of their normal economy? I've booked it on our midnight red eye flight back from KL to perth next January, so that i can arrive back in on the 5am flight and get straight into work that morning. Crazy.. but hoping these flat beds are super comfy and as they can recline i'll actually get some shuteye for once.

        • haha probably since no one hardly books them.

The full flights every time I've flown calls bullshit on that statement.

but hoping these flat beds are super comfy and as they can recline i'll actually get some shuteye for once.

Guaranteed. I fly business often enough on various airlines and I still find AirAsia to have one of the better seats. It lacks the service of the bigger airlines, obviously, and isnt a massage chair but for a ~4-7 hour flight, its more than enough.

        • @Cyphar:

fair enough. i didn't think others thought that way, but maybe we have just happened across different flights/scenarios in the past. Those that used to fly air asia when it first came out flew it becuase it was cheap, rather than wanting to pay extras for this sort of seating. Maybe times have changed anyway.

Regardless, I'll be trying it anyway come January 2017 so fingers crossed it is one of the better seats as you mentioned. Going to be a bit weird being at the front of the plane and having everyone walk past you (never liked being 'on show' in the premium area) but im sure sleeping flat past midnight flight will more than make up for it :D

  • Good price.

A way to work around the transit time is to head out, take the KLIA Expres to KL Sentral and park yourself at the Hilton or Le Meridien overnight. You can snag a night there for around $120, and they have a fantastic pool, as well as amazing shopping now that the KL Sentral shopping centre has been completed (Great cinema too)

    • That essentially adds to the fare.

      • Well, yes. No hotel lets you stay for free. Some people like the make the most of stopovers.
