  • I have a Repco filter that i got free, worth getting something different? Anyone know if the Repco ones leek? Thanks

    • +1

i would at least use a ryco. depends on the type of car though. Wouldnt trust a repco with a turbo.

      • Depending on where you live, they might be importers of genuine filters for same price as Ryco. I was shocked when I saw a pack of 10 hyundai z79a being sold for $100. Pretty cheap for genuine. In WA there is a chap running out of home that can do landcruiser filter (z334) for $30 each,

      • 1998 Honda civic d16y4 not a turbo but it likes to rev, might try a ryco or K&N and just keep the repco as a back up.

      • Supnigs That's an interesting response. An oil filter's job is to filter oil. How the engine gets it's air has nothing to do with oil. All engines run at the same temperature within a few degrees and the same oil pressure within a few Kpa. You don't trust a repco filter with a turbo because… you have repcophobia? Depends on the type of car? Can you give a list of which types a repco filter is suitable for and your qualifications or experience for that view?

        • +1

An oil filter filters the oil that lubricates the turbo that spins at many thousand RPM. Oil quality is more important to turbo longevity than air quality I'd argue.

I'd agree a Repco filter is probably good enough though.

        • And what leads you to the conclusion that a repco filter is probably good enough? Is it the way "repco" has a nice ring to it as it rolls off the tongue, or is it that you've had laboratory experience in used engine oil and filtration analysis?

        • @gomazz:
What leads you to say it isn't? Have you all of this experience you speak of?

Average consumer is not going to have this information either. How do you know any oil or filter is good enough? You don't usually. You have to have some faith they are selling a product that works.

Even if you bought a genuine factory filter, how do you know that is good enough? Do they supply lab oil and filtration analysis. No they don't.

        • @Shonky:

Just to add info on this - I have a Nissan 200sx with SR20DET engine, I have had no issues at all using Repco filters. I use the car for racing and have used more than 12 Repco filters in the last 2 years with no damage to my engine, no differences from running the genuine Nissan filters I was using previously.

        • +1

          @Shonky:
Sorry, my post is addressed to people on here in general. The ones giving their opinion on filters with nothing to back it up. For a start, no Australian business is going to risk their reputation or having to rebuild an engine by selling a shonky filter. In the past I've also seen the same opinions given on different brands of oil. The average person does 12,000km a year and sells the car after 4 years. They'd have no idea what happens inside their engine. Although they do get a warm glow because they use the most expensive oil with the costliest advertising campaign. Use the correct grade oil and change it and the filter at or before the recommended interval and even home brand oil will have your engine still running long after the rest of the car has fallen apart. I've been in the engine game, including condition monitoring for 37 years.

        • @gomazz: with that experience you should understand that ryco filters are good quality comparible to OEM.

Your past statements make me believe you don't understand too much about turbo engines

Filters contain a paper/cotton based element bonded to a plastic glue to meshed in metal. Cheap filters can have metal shavings in there in manufacturing. The filter breaks down rather quickly with pressure and heat.

        • Turbo run different to na. They have at minimum an oil line too. Oil temps and pressure is also different as is heat due to added combustion power.

        • @supnigs:
Clear your mind and reread what I have said above.

        • -1

@gomazz: comments were in response to your turbo and repcophobia rant directed at me.

It doesn't matter how many years you've done things but rather the exposure and experience also gained from others. You could be working in a shoebox in solemn for 60 years and still not be experienced.

        • +1

          @supnigs:
Well, I certainly can't argue with no logic. Your opinion is your opinion, but anyone elses is a rant? Goodbye supnigs.

        • @gomazz: well your rant was incorrect. Anyone in the know would pick it up. I dont plan on identifying myself or comply with your unreasonable requests.

        • @supnigs: I hope you have enough sense to not be in charge of a vehicle whilst in that condition.

        • @gomazz: stop being silly. Boasting 37yrs in engine business on the internet and can't even get turbo workings right. Go back under your bridge and find someone else to debate. Bye

Just a note. Autobarn prices are about 10% more expensive then dedicated battery shops so the savings are about 15% actual.

      • I just bought an Optima Yellow Top D34 - cheapest online price inc delivery was $325.

This sale is better as autobarn is $399 less 25% means $300. That is very cheap

    • Hey mate,

I have used a lot of OEM, Ryco, Repco and no-name filters.

In all my cars I use Repco. One of my cars is dedicated for racing and gets 8-10 oil changes per year. My daily driver is just a Commodore and gets 3-4 oil changes per year.

I've never had any issues/concerns. When there is a 20% off spares deal at Repco the price is low for common filters, mine are $6.60ea.

Ryco are great too, just putting in my 2c on the Repco filters.

    • I use the original OEM filters. Some are surprisingly cheap. For example a genuine Toyota filter usually is only a few $ more than a chinese Repco. Why risk it?

      • May I know where to source the genuine Toyota filters? Thanks

        • +1

Your local Toyota dealer will have them. Also some Toyota dealers are on ebay. You can also buy a "60000km,90000km,etc" kit with everything you need for the service.

  • +1

Thanks for posting. Anyone know if their online price for batteries match their store price? Thanks.

  • Can anyone tell me what is the best car battery to get from Autobarn for my 2011 Toyota Corolla Sedan? I know nothing about battery brands.

    • Go with the longest warranty.

    • +3

supercharge gold are great considering the price.

    • +1

Connect up the OzBargain surplus box of Eneloops?

It's green because you can recharge them.

    • -1

You can either get calcium or lead batteries. Calcium lasts for 10 years while lead is good for 3-5

    • +1

Century would be my pick. Go for either their "Hi Performance" (24 month warranty) or "Ultra Hi Performance" (36 month warranty) battery depending on how much you want to spend. You may find the Supercharge's are cheaper but they are not Australian made like these Century battery models.

Also worth noting that some of the Repco batteries are re-badged Century batteries, so try them for a price comparison.

    • Bosch. Not the cheapest but probably the best.

  • Can someone help a noobie pick whats the best Battery for her naissin pulsar 2015 saden car ?

    • +1

Check your existing battery's code but it would probably be this battery that I would recommend (I used the search on Century's site for a 2015 Nissan Pulsar ST):
      http://www.centurybatteries.com.au/resources/battery-finder/…

On a side note, why is your 2015 car already needing a battery???

      • mine died then dad bought a cheapo used one

        • +2

          Factory warranty??

        • -1

          @LoopyLou: secondhand car

        • @shadowrukia:
If you bought it used in 2015 but it's older, that doesn't make it a 2015 model.

If new in 2015 it should be under some kind of warranty.

        • -1

@Shonky: sorry i mean 2005 Nissan Pulsar ST-L augh my bad

        • too funny

    • Put water in it, charge it. At that age it shouldn't have a problem (unless you drive super short trips).

  • I have a 2000 vx holden commodore, anybody want to shed some insight on a new battery for it, or even let me know of the good brands to look for? (doesn't have to be at autobarn if it is better value)

    • +1

This is just from personal experience but my top 3 recommendations would be 1st-Century (ultra), equal 2nd-SuperCharge (gold) / Exide (extreme). Steer clear from the NRMA batteries, apparently they're cheap imports with NRMA brandings. But like from previous comments, go with the one with most warranty AND the highest possible CCA you can afford. With the high CCA you will notice the difference when starting up.

      • +1

I've used Bosch and Century, and they seem to do quite a decent job. Lasted well past their warranty, and the one Century battery that did die within warranty, was promptly replaced by Century.

    • +1

Just about any battery over 300 CCA will work in a commodore - 450 to 550CCA would be better (as long as the terminals are around the right way). Measure the existing battery cavity. Get the biggest battery you can afford that will fit in that space (with the terminals in the right orientation).

I have the same car and grabbed a battery from Big W (Exide) for $60 using e-gift card. In general I get 10 years from these batteries. But my driving pattern involves a 5 hr drive at least once a month (or just give it a good overnight charge once per month)

      • Agree - get the biggest one that will fit. If I remember correctly I put a small truck battery in my VT. You're probably better off with a larger cheaper battery than a smaller blue ribbon super mega triple platinum super extra gold premium plus.

FFS just bought a new battery last week.. UGH..

  • Best oil for 2005 VZ Holden wagon please? With 250K on the clock

    • I drive a 2011 Camry, tried most oils, seems the "best" one is Castrol Edge - usually 5-30W in Winter and 0-40W Summer.

I think with Japanese and Australian branded cars, as long as you change the oil every 6 mths or 10,000kms, it's pretty much of a muchness when it comes to oils.

I just try and stock up when there is a big Repco sale on for the Castrol Edge (5-30W) usually buy about 2-3 5L bottles for the next 2-3 changes.

    • Any of the big global oil brands are good. Castrol, Mobil, Shell, etc… can't go wrong. In terms of viscosity, just follow what Holden recommends in the handbook.

  • +1

Not sure if this is any good - I usually stick to buying Castrol Edge 5-30W 5L. There is usually a massive sale once-twice a year at Repco or price matched at Super Cheap Auto for $29 or $34.

Sometimes Autobarn has it for $49 specials in Clayton which is still way more expensive than Repco sales. On this sale, ticket price is $69.99, even if you take off a discount of 25% it would be about $52.50 - still nearly double the sale at Repco.

    • Repco is having Castrol Edge 5W-30 5L for $43. Not the best price but still better than this 25% off at Autobarn.

      • Yep, still not quite close to their $29 red hot specials per year, but if you need oil right now it's the lowest.

  • Wowza!! Quite a few Century batteries removed from website 12hrs before the sale. Especially the Ultra line.

  • Great price for Royal Purple, a little cheaper than I get on eBay regularly. At 10.30am the guy said they barely have any left.

People are really buying up K&N Filters too.

  • It seems expired. I delay my purchase to today when I saw it will expire in Monday.

    • I was pretty sure their website only said 30th/31st July. Not sure why it was entered as expiring today.
