90 day warranty. I'd want a $650 device to last longer than 90 days

    • +2

1 yr warranty for $50 extra, I supposed it's a fair deal, given that the price of Surface Pro 4 / book still expensive IMO - of course, subject to the condition of the actual condition as an refurbished item.

    • +5

My Surface Pro 3 just died. I don't even think it's much older than a year, if that.

      • +1

That should be returned under warranty if it was new.

        • +3

Use ACL if they refuse to do warranty repair/replace/refund.

I'd be very surprised if the idea that a ~$600 - ~$1700 tablet should last more than a year is considered unreasonable by ACL agents.

        • +6

          @Diji1:

Mine died too after 18 months….have had to go via NSW Fair Trading - MS try to be Apple but there aftersales support is a joke.

        • @Diji1: Should be 24months based on Apple devices as to what a 'reasonable person' could expect..

        • @MrMaxwell:

Sorry to hear you had to go to Fair Trading. Did you try their physical store in Sydney?

Getting my warranty sorted out (I'd purchased a returned product, got a 2 year warranty in the end) was painless. So was getting a replacement Kinect for my Xbox One.

I think they are aspiring to Apple levels of aftersales support…

        • Yeah we have extended warranty. Walked into work and it just boots to BIOS. Dang.

        • +3

@MrMaxwell: That cannot be true. Australian warranties are two years. My Surface Pro 2 screen slightly detached just under two years old. Microsoft not only replaced it with no questions asked, they replaced it with a brand new Surface Pro 3.

Ring Surface support, they are absolutely fantastic. If it is less than two years old you will have a brand new computer in days.

        • @dave999:

The MS Sydney Store offered me a refurb SP3 for $800 as warranty replacement - the smart arse then had the nerve to say 'take it or leave it'.

Not my kind of 'Apple' support.

        • @MrMaxwell: I would strongly suggest you ring surface support. The warranty on a surface sold in Australia is 2 years. My dealings with surface support has been absolutely amazing.

I had a surface pro 2 which had crash from resume issues from the day I bought it. When I rang them they said I could wait for updated driver or immediately replace it. I chose to wait, they said they would ring me back on a specific date and time in one month, they rang me within a minute of the time they said they would. The driver update didn't solve the issue and they replaced the SP2 by mail. I had a new one 3 days later.

After 23 months the SP2 screen was raised about half a millimetre near the windows button. As I was thinking of selling it to buy a SP3 I rang and asked them to fix it under warranty. They asked for a photo, as soon as they saw the photo they agreed to replace it under warranty. A couple of days later I received and brand new SP3 with keyboard and pen.

As far as I'm concerned there service is excellent. Do yourself a favour and actually ring surface support.

        • @dave999:

          OK will do.

        • @dave999:

What number did you call MS on? I can only get through to Asian call centres who are hopeless.

        • @MrMaxwell: That is a very good question. The website had changed since I contacted them in February. I'd suggest you go to https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-au/support/contact-us and enter your details of your problem, and then on the bottom right you can request a call back. I'm not sure if that is what you have already done or you end up speaking to someone different.

        • My dealings with surface support has been absolutely amazing.

          Me too.
Had a brand new SP3 last year, went into the BIOS for the first time and it had a password on it!
There was a bit of phoning/e-mailing backwards and forwards (if I was on the other end of the phone I don't think I'd believe it either!) but a few days later I got a replacement and a week(?) to send back the old unit in the supplied package.

      • Ignore the 1 year warranty and demand they honour more than a year.

      • for those who's SP3's have died, it might be due to the issue with their inbuilt SIMPLO batteries. MS have apparently isolated the issue (software) and is working on how to distribute the fix. If you're SP3's still work when plugged in, i'd say wait for the fix.

      • +1

If you registered your product you should have a 2 year warranty.

I bought a Surface Pro 3 that was a returned product at JB Hi-Fi. I scanned the receipt and emailed it and Microsoft gave me 2 years from the date of purchase.

      • My surface pro 2 had a 2 year warranty standard from Microsoft online.

        https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-au/support/check-warran…

      • They have a 2 year warranty according to the MS website. My SP1 was replaced twice, then I was given a SP3 when the third SP1 started failing with 3 weeks to go from the date I bought the first SP1. Aside from the fact that the SP1's kept failing, I loved them when they worked and the after sales service from MS has made me an evangelist for them. I bought the first SP1 from Harvey Norman and didn't step foot in the store again; all warranty was handled by MS and handled really well

        • +1

Agreed, microsoft after sales service is fantastic. Better than Apple given that you don't have to actually go into a store to get the same quality support.

    • +1

Depending on the age of the device, you may be able to claim under the statutory warranty law which is essentially "a product should last as long as you would expect it to".

      • +2

It's a bit more than that.. It's more about value vs worth - if you pay a lot more for a device that could be had cheaper (eg. Brand name tv vs no name) there's an assumptionof quality.

    • Get the warranty… I am on my third SP3. First 2 were brand new and died in around 6 months.

  • +4

I think there is option to buy 12 months for $50 extra.

  • +1

are these still available to buy new?

    • Yes.

  • Does this come with the Pen & Keyboard?

    • -8

Why would it? Not even a brand new unit is sold with keyboard

      • +2

See my comment down lower that states that they come with keyboard and stylus (I contacted them)

    • +9

Yes, the original keyboard and stylus pen are inlcluded.

      • Makes this a great deal, thanks!

      • Rep, good deal to me! What colours are there of the keybd included?

I prefer 8GB and 256GB ver. Any on offer?

        Thanks

  • +1

How much is the new one?

  • +2

Nice price, tracking at about $800 used on Gumtree / eBay but usually with a keyboard.

Considering you get a 90 day warranty pretty good buy.

    • +8

spending $650 on a repaired tablet with only a 90 day warranty is a good buy?? I dont think it is at all

      • +1

These units have not been faulty and then repaired. These units are ex-lease machines which have been changed over as the lease period has been expired. They are fully funcitonal and have come out a a working environment. We test them to makes sure there is no hardware issues and to make sure they are in very good cosmetic condition.

        • +11

Doesn't sound refurbished. Sounds used/second hand. No?

        • Technically this IS refurbished, as per an electronics definition, but personally I find it iffy =P (still correct, so no neg).

For transparency I would label these as "ex-lease".

        • +2

@tanksinatra: True. Refurbished most of the times is used for new faulty items repaired and then sold with 1 year warranty and are not used more than few times.
These are Ex-lease or recycled and used by users for lease period which normally is 2 to 3 years. OP will be able to clarify how much lease was there on these pros.

So Dell Outlet should sell all of their products as new?

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refurbishment_(electronics)

Sorry, but a neg from me unless OP change the description

        • +7

          The website states:

These item are in near new condition, in fact we would of listed them as new but they have been taken out of the original packaging. Condition will not dissapoint.

This makes it sounds like the are open-box models that are basically unused; however, you are saying here that they are ex-lease machines!?

          Sounds a bit misleading

        • @rebootit - ever considered advertising on Gumtree? ;)

        • @dbun1: True. They are selling these as almost new, but it can never be after a lease period.

        • +2

What we refer to is the physical condition. In our 15yrs experience these are A+++ condition. We have described them as refurbished and our website has plenty of information stating where the equipment comes from and that we are refurbished IT specialists.

You are welcome to come to our store and inspect, would be happy to hear your opinion after looking them.

        • We have in the past and may try it again.

        • +1

@rebootit: Deceptive sales I would say.
You an sell an item as:
          - New: Brand new item
          - Refurbished: New, DOA or returned in a week to Manf and then repaired by them. Comes in box sealed: Refurbished.
          - Display stock or Demo or ExLease.
          - Used/Recycled-> anything used for a month or so. everything else.

There is no definition in place, but it is understood. I laugh at an item called refurbished when all you have done is clean it outside and inside or changed an item if faulty.

Why don't you call them Exlease when there is a term for that.

        • +1

I bought a couple SP 3s from an auction. Ex govt. Immaculate like it came out of packaging and never saw the light of day no scratches bumps or anything. I guess some govt exec got it for the sake of getting one and just dumped it in their drawer in favour of an ipad.

        • @Gaggy:

Read my review on the next page and have a look at the pictures I posted of the condition.

All the negs based on whining about refurbished need to go from this thread.

      • +2

You have the option of 1 yr warranty for $50. I think with the extra warranty, kb and stylus under $700 is a great deal.

  • Ah yes, the good ol' Samsung Microsoft Surface Pro 3.

    • +1

      Why the negs?
Just pointing out the fact they added this into their Samsung section of their page, whether accidentally or lazily..

      "Home/Refurbished Laptops/Samsung Laptops/Microsoft Surface Pro 3 1631 Core i5 4300U 1.9GHz 4GB 128GB SSD Win 8.1 Pro 12" Near New"

  • Very good price and I would buy one but my Surface 3 is still working perfectly and I cannot find any excuse to upgrade :P

  • Can I upgrade OS to Windows 10?

    • Yes, free upgrade.

      • +3

Unlikely - free upgrade deadline is tomorrow so unless they ship it overnight tonight you'll have to pay to upgrade.

    • +2

Actually, by the time it arrives and you try to claim the upgrade it would have expired? I haven't seen anything to say the surfaces get the free upgrade after July. Happy to be wrong as I haven't explicitly checked.

    • You've only got about 47 hours from right now to get it upgraded for free, better get cracking.

    • -1

I'd be more interested in downgrading it to Windows 7, but I suspect that would cause major headaches.

      • It would be like running ios on infer…. oh wait…. never mind.

  • +1

    Great price!

But I would recommend the 256GB/8GB Ram version.

    • Depends on your use of this thing. For normal use, 4 GB is fine.

      • As opposed to abnormal use - get 8gb ram?

        • +1

Errr. Sorry. Abnormal use use mean 1GB or 32 GB ;-)

  • +2

I contacted them and got this response (apparently they come with keyboard and stylus):

We test the units for functionality and grade on condition. If there is anything wrong with the unit we either replace the part if something simple eg. RAM or HDD and if something major we break them down and they are sold for parts.

They are classified as refurbished as they have come from a lease agreement with a finance company and were fully functional in a work environment. We test, clean and re-image.

Yes, the stylus pen and keyboard are included.

    Regards
Jeff Fujii | Reboot IT Sales

    • Hmm looks like they've been used rather than just outside of the packaging.
Would like to hear from the store rep that mouse/keyboard is included and the condition

    • +5

If there is anything wrong with the unit we either replace the part if something simple eg. RAM or HDD and if something major we break them down and they are sold for parts.

I feel like they aren't familiar with the dismantling process of a Surface Pro 3 … RAM is soldered on the begin with, and even just removing the screen is a dangerous process.

      • +1

The comments we made about refurbishing are general comments on how we deal with all the equipment. If units come in where the RAM is soldered, there is nothing we can do in that case - so if faulty, it gets sold as parts.

  • I am not sure if I am doing this right however using the code "ozbargainfreeship" for the free shipping via check out does not work
    Spits out
"WarningThere is no such discount coupon.
    Please try again."

    • We tested, it is being auto applied to orders. If there is an issue and you get charged for freight, the freight cost will be refunded. Web guru's on the the job now!

    • Web gurus advising that free shipping code is being auto applied when item is being added into the cart. If you try and enter it a second time you will get that error. Let us know if that is not the case.

      • Yep, the free shipping gets added in but only if additional warranty is NOT added. Any chance of getting free shipping for both options?

        • +1

Done. You should now be able to get free shipping if the additonal warranty option is selected.

        • @rebootit: awesome thanks

  • Good deal. I got a refurb sp3 same config and it is awsome, guess from the same company s ebay store.
One caution, the window of free win10 upgrade is closing soon…

  • damn it. I was thinking of chucking mine on eBay next week!! looks like that's gotta wait then.

  • can i claim GST ?

    • can you?

      • Can't she/he?

        • Im planning to go overseas within 2 weeks. Rep, please answer my question above.

          Thanks!

        • @auanz: Yeah you can, have the device and receipt with you and go to the counter at the airport and they'll refund you the GST

        • We are not tax experts but take a look here https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Ente/Tour/Are-you-a-traveller. This will clarify for you.

  • Beware of the battery issue. Microsoft used SIMPLO and LG to manufacture batteries for the Surface Pro 3. If you get the unit with LG battery, should be fine. If not, good luck!

    • They have just announced that the battery issue can/will be fixed via a firmware upgrade.

      http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/07/some-surface-pro-3s-w…

      • Yeap but we will need to see first. cant really solve battery issue with firmware upgrade if the battery itself is the problem.

        • I'd suggest the real issue is simply the reported maximum charge level. The controller won't overcharge the battery if it's capacity is low, so it would never charge properly.

That should be able to be controlled by a firmware update… Hopefully.

    • If it's got a faulty battery, you return it under warranty. The fix will be out by the time the warranty runs out. It's not an issue.

  • Ordered - thanks for the share.

Will report back on the quality of the 'refurbishment' when I get it

    • Received it today - looks like brand new. Thanks!

  • +14

I don't understand how this can be sold as refurbished? Nothing is refurbished about them, simply second hand units.

    • That's right, only second hand products come with a 3 months warranty.

  • +2

    90 day warranty

No thanks!! Will consider if it comes with 12 MONTHS WARRANTY.

    • -3

Agreed, that's the deal breaker for me…adding $50 for a warranty is just price-gouging IMHO…

  • For the $50 upgrade to 12months warranty, the warranty is covered by rebootit or microsoft?

    • +1

I'm pretty sure its by rebootit.

  • Windows 8.1…

You've got one day to upgrade before you're stuck with it. But by the time it arrives, it might be too late.

    Deal breaker imo.

  • Just got my Surface Pro 2 replaced by Microsoft after 2 years for "electric shocking" me. Hopefully I can get some coin selling that bad boy and switch over to the Pro 3 :). Awesome timing!

I wish it had windows 10 though :(

I'm assuming this will have a GST amount included so I can claim back tax on the way out?
