Looks like $20.89 per week is the cheapest package I could get to qualify for the voucher - basic cover and light extras

      Terms and Conditions

Every new customer who signs up for a new Policy via the nib.com.au website during the Offer Period, provided:
      i. the Promoter accepts his/her Policy application,
ii. s/he remains a Policyholder during the 30 day cooling off period,
iii. s/he pays a minimum of the monthly premium payable for that Policy,
      becomes an Eligible Entrant.

You could be paying at least $83.56 before receiving the voucher. There's the risk of them not issuing the voucher by the end of the month, and then you have to pay for another week which then you won't benefit from the deal at all.

Too much risk for $16 profit.

Given also how crappy NIB is as a health insurer, as stated by djz below, I don't think this is a bargain.

I work in the healthcare industry and I'm intimately familiar with health funds and their billings.

NIB IS ONE THE THE WORST health funds you could possibly go with. It is the ONLY health fund in Australia that has a "No Gap" policy which means they do not allow your doctor to charge a gap , and if the doctor does (most would) then Nib will lower their rebate to you by almost 40%. As most specialists do charge a gap for operations that means your out of pocket fees will me MUCH higher than pretty much any other fund.

In addition they are the only fund that has a policy that demands the doctor to charge you the FULL fee if they are charging a gap that you must pay rather than just the gap , before you get back a minuscule amount (MBS Fee only) whereas other health funds allow them to only charge you the gap.

Eg if the doctors fee including the gap is $1000, other funds would expect you to only pay the gap of say $200. With Nib you are expected to pay the full $1000 to the doctor tand then you'll only get back less than $500.

Why wouldn't the doctor charge you as no gap then with Nib? Because Nib has also one of the lowest rebates so most specialists would not accept it as full payment.

I haven't even touched on Nib's questionable business and ethical practices….

Do yourself a favour and look elsewhere…that $100 voucher will be nothing once you get your first out of pocket bill during surgery with them!!!

Which fund would you recommend for extras only (no hospital). Mostly dental. Thanks.

      • Just about the ask the same question, is there a fund you recommend? I've been with NIB for about 15 years now but have not had to claim and hospital cover with them - only dental & optical thusfar.

      • For the most straightforward, Health.com.au
For those who like a clinician who is already a preferred provider for Medibank or BUPA, the according company
For those who are eligible, Teachers, Defence, or Police Health all provide good % back
For those who actually run the numbers, it may be best not to take out Extras and just pay for it out of pocket
        EDIT: HCF pays ok too

For me, I chose a members owned fund.

    • I want to up vote 10 times.. Thanks

      • djz would need to post this on Reddit.

    • Which health fund is the best for both basic hospital and extra? I am with Frank atm and they pay well on extra rebates. 80% most of cases.

Ended having to pay $10,000 out of pocket for surgery with NIB and that was after the medicare rebates (which were double/triple what NIB paid back).

  • can you cancel anytime?

  • Entirely agree with djz.

    STAY AWAY FROM NIB PERIOD

You will regret the decision when you have to really use it.

They should've been referred to ACCC long time ago, just like medibank.

  • I am copying and pasting my comment from the last NIB deal. I apologise if you've already read it.

"As an ozbargainer and a dentist, I wanted to add me 2 cents.

On the deal itself, I'm considering it for the purpose of avoiding the levy surcharge only.

However regarding PHI in general. I would recommend never getting any "Extras" or "Ancillary" cover. You'd have to do the maths yourself but I believe it's not worth it.

Patients often feel better when they get a rebate and pay less out of pocket at the time of the service. Patients who pay the full amount out of their own pocket and avoid the premiums for extras come out way ahead. Extras cover is just money recycling. You pay the health fund $1 for extras cover to get 50c back as your rebate.

The premiums increase each year outstripping CPI yet rebates don't keep up. These insurance companies are huge private corporations who make billions in profit every year. How do they manage this? They aren't writing policies where you come out ahead."

Also watch out for "preferred provider" agreements with practitioners. They agree to charge less in order to get more business but from what I can tell. They also choose to lower the costs elsewhere (this is me putting it as politely as possible). Remember, this isn't buying a fixed product that you can compare solely on price. You get what you pay for with health care!
