  • a quick google tells me that the ZTE MF823 dongle can be unlocked with DC unlocker for a few dollars.

Yes, EUR 7, which is about AUD 10, unlocked flawlessly with their portable exe.

I unlocked several of them the other day, sometimes there's a chance your MF823 to be stuck in diagnostic mode - modem and web gui won't funtion.
You need to download the drivers (3 of them: modem, app, and diagnostic) to detect the MF823 while in diagnostic mode to exit diagnostic mode (if you know what I mean).

For those interested as well, regular Telstra Pre-Paid doesn't support public IP for their prepaid broadband (if you want to use DMZ on this modem for your !@#$%^&*() purposes).
You need to be subscribed as Telstra Business Customer and have this in your account and you can request a public IP for the broadband number.
Haven't tried other SIMs for public IP though.

If you know other SIMs that can provide you with public IP, you can DMZ your MF823 using this guide.
The port forward function is there but I can't get it to work.
      Godspeed.

      • Awesome. Thanks for the info.

Coles offer Telstra MF90 Pre-Paid 4G WiFi Mobile Broadband 24.5$ including 2Gb/30days from tomorrow.

    • +2

I was looking at that, but my understanding is that it has limited support for frequencies. (LTE 1800 MHz UMTS 850, 2100 MHz)
Coles also has this starting tomorrow - Optus Huawei E5573 Pocket WiFi Modem $24.50. May be unlocked and supports below frequencies but likely no data
      3G Network900/2100MHz
      4G NetworkFDD 1800/2600/700/2100MHz, TDD 2300MHz

      • Your right regarding the frequency support, should still work ok for Telstra if you get decent signal strength.

I purchased a few of the Optus Huawei E5573's and was actually pleasantly surprised by the fast performance in my on/of

average reception area where I live. Seems to usually come bundled with sim starter loaded with 4 Gig/14 days unless

        they changed that recently.

      • Is the Huawei E5573 for $24.50 in the catalogue somewhere? I can't see it in the catalogues that starts on Wed 20/07/2016

      • same dont see it on the coles catelogue :(

      • Optus Huawei E5573 don't appear to be on the catalogue as well for WA. Only Telstra MF90.

just came back from coles E5573 is still $49 after scan

      • I guest it's Huawei E3372 USB, not E5573 pocket

  • Good stuff… moving house and need a couple of these to get us through the next couple of weeks until the net gets setup!

  • The Good Guys has just dropped Telstra Prepaid ZTE MF823 to $18.

  • Hi, can any of this be unlocked for other carrier? Recently stock up load of telstra and optus starter kit. Never had a dongle looking to get one.

The top comment in this deal actually answers this question. Look at the comment from Brokenglish.
