What Brand Name That Won't Give You a Bargain?

Hi guys,

Today I was looking to sign up an Optus Broadband to pair up with my Optus mobile from the recent $40 deal. Bundling them together gives you $20 discount.

However, I found out that my line is telstra owned, and therefore optus have to charge me a premium for it,which is extra $20.

As soon as I heard the word telstra, I knew it's not going to be cheap.

What other store name or brand name, as soon as you heard it, u know that u won't be getting a bargain?

feeBay when selling something will never give you a bargain. Although they do own Gumtree which is a little concerning.

    • They had a no final value fee promotion a few weeks ago - might've been a targetted offer though

      • They keep sending this to me regularly…. pointless when I don't sell anything….

        • The point is, they do offer discounts.

Aesop - $65 for 500ml of moisturiser that smells like mandarin peel and cedar

    • Honestly what's wrong with this brand? They are just soap/lotion, why do they cost like diamonds.

        T-they just smell so goooood
opens free travel-size sample and takes a sniff

        • My wife crazy about it, she suggests me to use the hand lotion, I refused, I refuse to use $1 drop of thing that do the same thing as 10c.

    • You can get a discount by buying at David Jones, with discounted gift cards via entertainment book.

Although, $59 for moisturizer is still expensive.

  • Hey I'm getting a pretty good deal with Telstra Prepaid Mobile. You just need to be aware of the ins and outs of the plans.

The network may or may not work at given time?

      • Hah I love that Telstra is now the new Vodafone in regards to reliability

  • Lacoste. I only wear Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger or Lacoste. You can often get Ralph and Tommy quite cheap in the outlet stores, but Lacoste is hardly any cheaper

The common theme in this thread is luxury goods are difficult to get a discount on. Congratulations everyone, you all pass high school economics 101!

(I wonder how many negs I can get for this comment)

    • The question is which luxury goods are worth the tag?

      • +2

The only example of 'worth-it' luxury goods I can think of are things with a good re-sale value (but not many people thing like this)

For example, a 2-year old iPhone still sells for $500+. This can make the total cost of ownership lower than other flagship phones from samsung/htc/etc.

I'm sure there's similar examples with cars. Not sure if there's a resale market for luxury handbags, cosmetics, clothes, etc.

  • Powerlifting gear never goes on sale. Belts, wraps, sleeves and shoes all end up costing a fortune for good stuff!

    • Kmart had belts a few months ago for $5. Not the highest of quality though.

  • Subaru's - While their cars are seasonably priced to their competition, one can rarely snag a bargain as all of their dealerships are owned by Inchcape Australia. Basically you cant pip one dealer against another for a like for like car.

    • Rubbish. There's a Zupps Subaru in Brisbane which is owned by AHG. Inchcape are the importers/distributors but that doesn't mean you can't play the dealers off against each other

Most Subaru dealers across Australia are all owned by Subaru Australia (Inchcape), so you will most likely get more or less the same deal regardless of where you go. They don't operate like independent stores, instead more like separate 'offices' from the master dealer (which in Melbourne is Docklands). Subaru are notoriously reluctant to discount their product unless it is on sale already. Some of the country dealers are privately owned, but they will still be reluctant to discount too much so as not to jeopardize the franchise.

      • I still respectfully disagree.

Inchcape own a single dealership in Sydney. I doubt that there is only one Subaru dealer there.

In Queensland, Inchcape two Subaru Dealerships. There is a total of 9 Subaru dealerships JUST in Brisbane city. Probably far more around greeater Queensland.

I own two Subarus, a BRZ and a Forester and negotiated substantial >15% discounts off both of them

Can't find any worthy bargain ever, even when going to the shops in DFO, etc. So these days I won't bother checking.

Blizzard. I play Overwatch PS4, and I still think its just overpriced for what you get. I don't care about micro-transactions usually, but I hate the gambling lootboxes in OW. Hate it. It really puts a bad taste in my mouth when I get another crappy item I didn't want, for a character I don't play, that and I'm super annoyed all the future maps, characters, etc DLC will be paid, too. Because I like the game so much, I feel like I'm dropping all this money into it, and its already expensive. It feels like a wrought. Then I think about how Blizzard is literally the biggest and richest gaming company of all time, and they don't even need to make it a gambling system, and it annoys me even more, lol.

I also play Battleborn (the puny inferior underdog) and while its not quite as fun or polished as OW (its more brawlery and objective based like LoL), its still super fun in a different way and Gearbox are just way more generous with their content. I paid a lot less for the game itself, I don't have to gamble to get the skins I want (there are still micro transactions but you can just buy the exact item you want), AND future maps and characters are apparently all going to be free— they gave us one character already and new maps next week, for free. Campaign DLC is pay but they gotta charge for something, to be sure. Its amazing that even being crushed by Blizzard, they are generous with their content, when they need the money more and Blizzard doesn't.

  • Agree that Telstra are expensive, but I got offered to get an extra 3GB a month for only $8 more (instead of $10 per 1GB used over your original limit). And I also received a $200 'welcome gift' so I had my first couple of bills paid for.

    • Nice! How did you get that?

      • Just got offered by Telstra, maybe ring up and ask?

  • Pola cosmetics, jo Malone, London of liberty fabrics (even when on sale)
