What Brand Name That Won't Give You a Bargain?

Hi guys,

Today I was looking to sign up an Optus Broadband to pair up with my Optus mobile from the recent $40 deal. Bundling them together gives you $20 discount.

However, I found out that my line is telstra owned, and therefore optus have to charge me a premium for it,which is extra $20.

As soon as I heard the word telstra, I knew it's not going to be cheap.

What other store name or brand name, as soon as you heard it, u know that u won't be getting a bargain?

    • Yep, proforma pricing I think it's called. I ended up importing my washer / dryer from Europe. Cost was $9,000 here and I paid $4,200 delivered Inc import fees, customs clearance etc

I think Samsung is much more worth it… But if you are true ozbargainers, why not DIY with Raspberry Pi?

      • -1

        How?

        • +4

          Hey fruit,

To make raspberry pi, here is the recipe:
          http://www.instructables.com/id/Raspberry-Pi-Multi-Room-Audi…

There are plenty other recipes that is similar, the point would be using the discontinued logitech media server. It serves the purpose, but won't be as pretty as sonos or Samsung

        • @fm: I prefer razz berries recipes.

      • +4

Because we want a working solution. Linux doesn't deliver that and requires a huge time investment to get to a half working solution. Terrible option.

    • Ah yes, but it's worth every penny!

LV bags. Chanel and Dior cosmetics. I've recently started exploring their cosmetics and skin care range,an upgrade from my usual Clinique and Estee Lauder. I've been waiting for a gift with purchase promo or some bonus gift but so far none. I might have to grit my teeth and use the Myer gift cards I purchased from this week's Woolies catalogue.

    • +2

Do you notice that their prices for exactly the same item has been increasing by almost 50-80%?

Also if you are after luxury bags, you can get it cheaper in Europe…

      • Yes the prices of cosmetics have definitely increased, and the usual excuse given is that our AUD has dropped against the USD. I feel totally ripped off when I compare with the prices that the Americans pay.

        • +7

Bah, thats a bs excuse. When aud rises they don't reduce the price either…

        • +1

Ugh, I hate that. They always raise prices but they never lower them when the dollar is stronger, they just soak in the extra money. I tend to buy any high-end brand cosmetics in Asia now, (Sasa, Cosme.de, AlphabeautyUK on ebay) they in particular are legit and I have been using them forever, although they don't always have stock. Although lately even Sasa seems to be charging different prices depending on where you live, now. Still cheaper than retail. In-store Sasa is pretty great if you go to Singapore or KL. And I think they have one in Melbourne now. Never use Strawberrynet though, they sell clearance/outlet stuff at higher prices than most outlet sites.

    • +1

You can sometimes get certain Chanel and Dior cosmetics cheaper on other sites such as Ozsale or strawberrynet. Depends on what you're looking for though.

      • +1

Chanel and Dior are very strict with controlling their price, it is very rare you will find them on sale even online. If you are a retailer authorised to hold stock, you gotta adhere to their price policy. This came from one of my friends who used to work in Chanel.

        • Did she happen to mention that employees get discounts of 50+% ?

        • They source their stock from overseas I believe which is cheaper. Haven't had a problem with the legitimacy of their stock either. Although these days strawberrynet is more expensive at times because of our bad exchange rate.

    Coalition

  • I will stick strictly to the question - I once walked into the Pitt St. (Sydney) branch of Birkenstock a few days before X'mas and asked what sort of discounts would apply to the Boxing day sales. The salesguy eyed me up and down and uttered snootily, "We. don't . do. sales".

Hahaha, don't know if it's true or I was just being trolled. Have stuck to wearing other ortho brands since.

    • I thought Ortho shoes/sandals all depend on your feet type? Some need higher arch support, some don't, like the Asics pronation types?

      • They work well enough for me, but I have relatively 'normal' feet. You're right though, my sister has collapsed arches, and she gets her footwear made via a podiatry clinic.

        • They cost a fortune right? $300 or something. Insurance extras refund a bit though.

I bought the scholl orthaheel, not bad for me.

        • @fm: Yup, and yup. (I have the Orthaheel too. Just wish they had it in a sandal format instead of that uncomfortable thonng version)

EDIT: Well, whaddya know, just checked their website, they have the Velcro sandal version now. Time to go buy another one!

Comply. I can't think of any other reason other than "we are the only people who produce foam tips for almost every earphones" for their pricing.

    • At least they produce a quality product.

      • Especially given how you have to replace them once in awhile (Comply recommends 3 months or sooner), I seriously can't see their products justifying their price tag.

        • I used mine for about 12 months before moving them to a secondary set of headphones where they are still used on occasion.

        • @johnno07: I wouldn't say you can't use it for that long, that said I personally wouldn't (kinda think foam tips get unhygienic after few weeks in).

Anyways, knock offs from China are fraction of what they are asking, you can DIY if you have the skills to do so (with those foam ear plugs). Given how cheap those alternatives are and how cheap the materials must be, I honestly don't see their mark up as a reasonable mark up (hence I don't see their price tag to be reasonable).

That said, I said I dislike their pricing, didn't say their product was complete trash. I personally cannot see justifications on spending over $20 (Their S line, which I believe is their cheapest?) on an accessory that the manufacturer recommends replacement every 3 months when alternatives can be had at price as low as few dollars (Silicon tips) or other means (DIY or foam tips from Aliexpress).

Besides, I honestly can't imagine these costing them much to produce, their mark up probably is massive. As I said, I cannot imagine the pricing being from anything other than from "we are the only people who produce foam tips for almost every earphones".

        • @Oversimplified: I don't know what to say. I bought 5 pairs on sale from Comply for ~$7 each delivered. They have been great value.

        • @johnno07: Well, I doubled checked (surprised that I forgot about commenting on that deal as well), US $25 for 5 doesn't look that bad (other than you can get 6 pairs for USD $6.50 for generic foam tips in Aliexpress).

I guess that'd be something I'd pay half grudgingly (because I still think their profit margin is massive, materials wouldn't cost them half that price).

      • Ask a guy who made 300k, what his average tax rate was.The asking tax rate might be 49%, but his effective tax rate was probably closer to 30% (after negative gearing, superannuation, work related deductions, etc)
      • Ask a guy who's racked up a 100k tax debt (including interest and penalties). I'm sure he could haggle it down to 60k with an easy payment plan
      • Ask a dole bludger who's never worked a day in their life … no tax payable

I guess you only get screwed when you're an ordinary income earner and have to pay the asking rate.

      • +6

        you forgot:
        - ask any religious organisation…

        • +1

Technically the religious organisations aren't getting the good deal - it's the rich people donating to them, who get the good deal.

        • +1

@sp00ker: I reckon 0% tax rate on any income $0 -> $∞ is technically a pretty good deal

        • +1

          @samojed:

You're confusing income(profit) with revenue. Tax is paid on profit, not revenue. Religious organizations are typically non-profit, so their income in any given year should be $0. Their revenue could be in the millions.

        • @sp00ker: So you're saying that when 'the Church of Scientology appealed against a ruling by a lower Victorian court that determined it was not a religion' it did so on behalf of its donors and wasn't pursuing its own interests to be exempt from taxation?

Nintendo. Their first party games (Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, etc) stay at RRP for the entire life of the console. The Wii U, their biggest console failure (not inc Virtual Boy) is still full price.

    • +2

They're often pretty cheap on release though. I think Mario kart was like 44 on release day ?

      • -1

True, but every game has a introductory sale price.

  • Rolex, Omega, Tag Heuer, Panerai and all luxury class Swiss watch brands!

    • +1

They may not discount RRP but you can easily negotiate 25%-35% off RRP with the retailer depending on brand, given the retail margins are huge.

      • +1

Easy to get a discount on Tag, to an extent with Omega and difficult to get a discount on Rolex (unless you want a flashy precious metal Rolex).

        • -1

Oh I know but even at the discounted price they're seriously expensive. Used on the other hand (except Rolex) is far more manageable personally…

    • +1

Really? I get tons of stuff on sale from them. The problem is they do a lot of bogus sales that aren't really sales so its hard to see if its a legit bargain or not. But occasionally, they'll do a clearance type 'we're desperate now!' sale and they're actually really good. Especially preowned stuff (although they are sometimes bad condition, I got a scratched second hand copy of Just Dance 2014 but they changed it). And they had by far the cheapest Rockband set— even cheaper than the US, about $200 off retail. And I got Second Son for like $28 dollars two years ago, and preowned Dungeon Siege III for $10, and they were the only one who had a preowned copy of Style Boutique 3DS for a good price, I think around $20— JBHifi was charging the Nintendo Store price for their preowned item— $59.95.

Launch prices always suck though, console prices suck, and they are slow to do 'real' sales, but occasionally they do. Also they do pricematch and have a points system, so theres that. Shipping to Perth sucks though.

I think they have a bad rap because in the past they literally just overcharged everything and had no good sales, ever. I don't think this is the case any longer though.
