[iOS] Weblock - Adblock for iOS $0 (Was $1.99) @ iTunes

680

Weblock allows you to block online content. It can block ads (banners and popups in other apps and websites), stats and user tracking, scripts or images. It also allows you to block specific websites, like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, social widgets from websites or get rid of annoying Tapatalk popups. You can even define your own content filters. Using Weblock you can block basically any network resource!

Trumps my post last week https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/256680 (The same developer) for sure! This is meant to be a much better Adblocker for iOS. Great find OP! Stand by for an avalanche of + votes!

Adblock works on mobile data as well as wi-fi. Weblock only works on Wi-Fi.

Tried AU but got some error, then logged in with my US account and it worked, thanks OP

  • No issues downloading via my AU account. Didn't follow the manually entered link though. Just clicked on the picture link which opened up my iPhone iTunes and got it there.

Thanks. Just a question. Will this block youtube (app) ad too?

    Found answer:
WARNING: Latest YouTube app update use different mechanism to get ads. This caused Weblock to be ineffective against ads in YouTube app. We're currently working on a solution to this problem. For now we encourage our users to use great YouTube alternatives for ad-free experience: Youtube site in Safari web browser or alternative apps like Tubex or Tubee for YouTube. Please keep in mind, that enabling "Block YouTube" filter from filters list will block all content from YouTube, including the actual videos! To block only YouTube ads, please enable all entries from AdServers and General AdServers filters.

      So YouTube is ad-supported…

Way to support the artists :(

      • The artists only get paid if watchers actually click on the presented ads, so blocking an ad that you were never going to click makes no difference.

        • +1

Not true. Clicked ads get significantly more revenue, but watched ads get some, with skipped ads getting even less.

WRONG WRONG WRONG - read ahead…

          https://www.google.com.au/adwords/costs/

          No visit, no fee

Signing up for Google AdWords is free. You only pay when someone clicks your ad to visit your website, or calls you. In other words, when your advertising is working.

    This only works on Wi-Fi.

I got this app last time it was free (it has been free 3 times before). It works using a Wi-Fi proxy to filter out ads so it doesn't work on mobile data. It blocks most ads in apps but when there are ads that cover the full screen the app sometimes darkens and freezes. The filters are fully customisable and easy to switch on and off. If you a good adblocker for safari and apps that use safari I would recommend Purify (costs) and 1Blocker (Free with Pro Version Upgrade). Purify is fast but often breaks sites. 1Blocker is customisable like Weblock, isn't as fast as Purify but breaks less sites. Also if you 1Blocker for Mac your whitelist syncs between devices. Also with content blockers like Purify and 1Blocker (not like Weblock) you can hold down on the reload button and reload the page without any adblockers.

If you use Samsung Internet you can get AdBlock Fast and I believe that uBlock Origin has support for FireFox on Android. Other than that you would probably have to get a specific browser. I wouldn't trust AdBlock Plus's Browser. There are plenty of AdBlocking browsers on the play store though I find that they tend to do AdBlocking well but nothing else and are often slowing and have bugs than other browsers. So I would suggest using either Samsung Internet or Firefox mobile with the apps I mentioned above as they have better compatibility with more devices and are web browsers with more features than just ad locking.

Excellent. Thank you for your comprehensive post. I use chrome on a note 4.

I forgot to mention this in my comment above: You can download adblock plus for android which works similar to this over Wi-Fi only. To install it click on small link at the bottom of the webpage saying 'Download Adblock Plus for Android' not the big link saying 'Get AdBlock Browser'. As you can see here there are quite a few instructions to follow to get to work. Also it will probably require acceptable Acceptable Ads or make it complicated to opt-out.

Note: I currently don't have an Android phone but when I did used uBlock Origin with Firefox. I had some goes with AdBlock Plus but couldn't get it to work reliably. I currently have an iPhone with just about every adblocker ever installed on it.

Adaway will do the best kind of adblocking (blocks ad servers across entire device, no resource usage) using hosts but you require a rooted device.

If you want to use it search for search for fdroid and install fdroid market - this is a market for free open source apps. Then "update repositories" (or something like this) and search for adaway.

Great app! As someone pointed out, blocks only via Wifi but it works well without any crashing or breaking sites etc.

FYI: Doesn't block Youtube ads :(

  • Is this a similar product as Crystal ?

    • +1

      No

Weblock diverts web traffic that is ads to a Wi-Fi proxy. Crystal uses apples new content blocking API and can only block ads in Safari and apps that use Safari. Weblock only works over Wi-Fi and blocks ads in all apps, Crystal blocks ads over Mobile Data and Wi-Fi only in Safari. I don't like Crystal as it only uses Ad Block Plus's Easylist. Crystal only gives safari a copy of Ad Block Plus's list to Safari, I recommended some other content blockers above.

Downloaded it last time and have already uninstalled on iPad mini 2. It stops some ads on games and apps but it kills a lot of websites. In other apps, it totally breaks them. The app waits for advertising and just go into some internal loop.

Some people might get along with this ad blocker, but my mileage was very short. If apps start acting up or websites start to not load or get really sluggish, turn off the blocking app and try again…

  • didnt work on youtube

    • Yes, and they advertise it does block Youtube ads…. that was why I installed it. Then I read the fine print and find that they are doing to usual "Youtube has just changed their…." bullshit.

      • practically it is useless

  • Was 1.99, then free now 2.99??

Must have missed out before they jacked the price.
